Free Junk Swap!
If you’ve ever been to the Maldon Junk Swap, you’ll know that the title is
rather misleading because the ‘stuff’ isn’t junk and you don’t actually have
to swap it! The event began as a way of trying to reduce the amount of
waste that gets taken to landfi ll sites. Individuals are encouraged to have a
Spring clean and to then join the crowds as they queue to bring along their
unwanted items such as books, toys, kitchenware and CDs.
The doors open at 10am and then everyone is free to have a look round at
all the ‘treasures’ that have been brought in and to take home anything that
takes their fancy - for free! In previous years, folk have come away with
brass fenders, wicker hampers and fully decorated Christmas trees so you
never know what you might fi nd.
There’s no limit to the number of items you can take home and the only
limit for your unwanted items is that they must be in good condition, small
enough to be carried in and they mustn’t be toxic, hazardous or electrical.
Any sewing machines, plumbing, carpentry or mechanics tools will be
passed to the Tool Box project which also meets at the church.
Cakes and refreshments will be on sale in the small hall. There’s level
access for wheelchairs and buggies and easy access toilet facilities. Jo
Stark, minister of Maldon Baptist Church, said “It’s good to see everyone go
home with a smile and an unexpected fi nd.’
Now that the weather’s brighter, why not
have a clear-out and bring your unwanted
items to Maldon Baptist Church Hall, Butt
Lane, Maldon CM9 5HD between 10am
and 11.30am on Saturday 28th April, 2012.
For more information, contact Jo
Stark on 01245 358 951.
New cancer support
centre
Helen Rollason Cancer Charity will be opening a new cancer support centre
in Hatfi eld Peverel. There are currently 3 Helen Rollason cancer support
centres: one in Springfi eld, Chelmsford and 2 others in Hertfordshire and
London. They offer counselling and support to cancer patients and their
carers. Patients can also have therapies to complement their treatment
and reduce stress - including massage and refl exology – which the charity
provides free of charge. After running a campaign to raise money for
another centre, Helen Rollason Cancer Charity has been working alongside
the YJS Charitable Trust to fi nd the right building in the right location. The
Old Bank Building in Hatfi eld Peverel meets all of their requirements: a
large building in a friendly community that is easy to reach by road and rail.
The new centre – which will be called ‘Yvonne Stewart House’ – requires
some work so does not yet have an opening date.
See you soon I hope, out there
enjoying, like me, the varied and
Home-start Maldon seeks
volunteers!
Families can fi nd it hard to cope for
all sorts of reasons. Many parents
need help, friendship, advice or
support during those early years
when children are young.
We recruit and trains volunteers to
help families with at least one child
under fi ve. Our volunteers, who
know about being a parent, support
other parents by visiting them in
their homes offering emotional and
practical support.
We have a new preparation course
in May and wish to recruit new
volunteers. We’d love to hear from
any parents who feel they could
offer some of their time to make
a difference in their community.
Diamond
Birthstone of April
Diamonds are arguably the most well known and most desirable
gemstone. The name is derived from the Greek αδάμας (adámas) meaning
“unbreakable” or “untameable”. According to ancient Greek myth, a Minoan
youth disturbed Zeus and was, as a result, turned into the adamas!
Approximately, 3 billion years old, diamonds are the result of carboncontaining
minerals having been subjected to immense pressure and
incredible temperatures 140 – 190 kilometres deep in the Earth mantle.
Volcanic eruptions then bring diamonds to the surface through magma in
pipes which cool as the Kimberlites and Lamproites (particular igneous
rocks) from which diamonds are then mined.
The presence of boron produces the blue tint in fancy coloured diamonds,
just as radiation gives a green trace and nitrogen infl uences a yellow colour
– such as the canary-coloured rock once sported by Elizabeth Taylor.
Diamonds are the hardest natural substance known to man, they rate as 10
on the Moh Scale of Hardness. Their durability and their relative expense
may be the primary reasons for their popularity in
engagement rings but it is their ability (with good
cutting) to refract light and to disperse white light to
show spectral colours (i.e. sparkle) that makes
them so sought after in all dress jewellery.
Less than 20 per cent of those mined are ever
destined for commercial use.
Their value in jewellery is determined by
several factors such as: cut (shape,
symmetry and polish); clarity; colour;
mass and fl uorescence.
Most importantly for us, all our diamonds and diamond set pieces have
been sourced from areas of non-confl ict.
Pop into Read & Simpson to learn in greater detail about diamonds –
the “4 C’s”; diamond grading; how they are cut and mounted and see
examples to suit all pockets. You chose the stone or stones; you decide
on the setting and we’ll create your perfect piece especially for you.
DID YOU KNOW?...
A blue diamond, once belonging to the King of Spain (known as the
Wittelsbach Diamond), weighing over 35.5 carats was sold for over
US$24 million at a Christie’s auction. In May 2009, a 7.03 carat blue
diamond exceeded the highest price per carat ever paid for a diamond
when it fetched 10.5 million Swiss francs (US$9.5 million at the time) at
auction. Seven months later, however, a 5 carat vivid pink diamond was
sold for $10.8 million in Hong Kong. Western Australia has enjoyed an
exciting fi nd recently, where a pink diamond has been mined weighing in
at 12.76 carats and has been named the Argyle Pink Jubilee.
SWANS
Many of you will know about SWANS and the services it offers but for the uninitiated, here is a brief history lesson.
SWANS (which stands for Sometimes We All Need Support) was formed
back in 1994 by a small group of like minded people interested in taking
some courses and realising that the facilities just weren’t there for people
with physical and/or sensory impairments. Rather than give in and say
“oh well”, they approached the local adult education services who agreed
to put on a course in St Cedds House in central Maldon, which would be
accessible. After a while, that money ran out and the group decided they
would have to fi nd a way to fund it themselves. And so SWANS was born.
Since those days they have fl ourished (not without a share of bad times
along the way) and now offer a wide range of courses and services
to physically and sensory impaired adults in the Mid Essex area. The
new program starts week beginning 16th April and includes IT, Digital
photography, craft, ‘Beat the Blues’ (a blend of different subjects to help
deal with day-to-day stresses), the book club and a creative writing course.
In addition there will be a series of sessions with a more social focus, giving
course members the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities.
SWANS also have a fully equipped therapy suite, offering treatments by
qualifi ed and insured therapists. So, if you are a physically or sensory
impaired adult (or know someone who is) and you want to increase your
skill base - to improve employment opportunities or enhance your social life
- then get in touch. SWANS also offer a range of opportunities for people
who want to volunteer, with full training so are interested in talking to you if
you are able to become a volunteer driver or a volunteer “buddy”.
SWANS supports its activities through grants and local fundraising and over
the past year this has included an annual Charity Ball, which was a great
success - with high quality ‘activity and gift’ packages being auctioned. A
big thank you to all of the generous bidders! We had a very successful
collection day at Tesco, where Santa distributed sweets to children and
there was the opportunity to have a photo taken with him and a stunning
From John Picton - SWANS Business Development Manager
Harley Davidson motorbike! Members, friends and supporters have
undertaken a variety of sponsored events including swims, half marathons
and even running through mud! We worked with Andy Harris Custom
Cycles to put on the Bikes and Barges Motorcycle Show in Promenade
Park, Maldon and we are delighted to say that this year we are joining
forces with the Maldon Classic Car show and Bikes and Barges to put on
a combined event. The two shows (1st July) will cover most of Promenade
Park and will be completely free. They look likely to be the best yet!
For even more information about SWANS and how to join in, please
give us a call on 01621 841491 (if we aren’t there, leave a message and
we will get back to you) or visit our web site www.swans.org.uk.
Osteopathy Therapeutic massage
Tel: 01621 842 750
2 & 4 Kings Head Centre, Maldon, Essex CM9 5PN
Registered
Osteopaths
The Courtyard Clinic was established in 2000 and over the past 12 years has successfully treated
thousands of patients with a range of conditions. Our Male and Female
practitioners are registered with the General Osteopathic Council and
undergo continuous training in order to maintain standards and stay at the
forefront of the profession.
We are located in the heart of Maldon adjacent to the White Horse car park
and our team aim to provide the best possible care in pleasant surroundings.
If you wish to discuss an injury or treatment, please contact us.
Neck and Shoulder Pain
Patrick Murphy and The Courtyard Clinic Osteopathic Team
If you have ever experienced neck or shoulder pain, you will know how it
can disrupt everyday activities.
Pain in these areas is usually caused by damage to the soft tissues – the
muscles, ligaments and tendons. Neck pain and sometimes shoulder pain,
can also be caused when the neck joints become irritated.
How can the cause of my pain be diagnosed?
There are seven vertebrae in the neck (the cervical vertebrae), these bony
building blocks of the spine are separated by discs and the nerves in the
neck run alongside them. As we get older changes in the structure of the
neck can occur causing stiffness, restricted movement and in some cases,
pinched nerves. A trauma such as whiplash or a sports injury may also
cause structural damage.
In diagnosing the cause of neck or shoulder pain it is important to review
the history of the symptoms. An osteopath will take note of any past injury
and the location, intensity, duration and radiation of the pain. Positions
or motions that relieve or aggravate the pain are also noted. The neck is
examined at rest and in motion and an examination of the nervous system
is performed to determine whether or not nerve involvement is present.
Have I got a trapped nerve?
Trapped nerves can cause a great deal of discomfort. Typically they can
cause pain in the shoulder, arm and upper back. In some cases tingling or
numbness can be felt in the hand and your arm can feel weak.
Can neck & shoulder problems cause headaches?
Headaches are very common with neck problems and are usually easily
resolved. However it is important to ascertain the exact cause of the
headache. Your Osteopath will take a very detailed medical history and
undertake specifi c tests to ensure that neck problems are the cause of your
symptoms. If your Osteopath feels that your headache is unrelated to
your neck pain you will be referred to your GP for further consultation.
Can I improve and maintain movement in my neck?
Many people visit our clinic when they are having trouble moving their
neck, particularly when driving, e.g. when reversing or turning their head at
junctions. In the vast majority of cases osteopathic treatment will improve
movement and fl exibility.
Hot or cold?
Generally, if you experience sudden shoulder or neck pain, use a cold
compress to the back of the neck or on to the shoulder for 10 minutes at a
time – frozen peas wrapped in a damp tea towel will do the job. This will
reduce infl ammation, which will help to reduce pain. Using a cold compress
is usually recommended following a sudden onset of pain for 2-3 days,
following this you should fi rst apply heat e.g. wheat bag or hot water bottle
for 10 mins followed by cold as above 3 times a day.
If the pain doesn’t get any better within 2 to 3 days a more in-depth
diagnosis and specifi c treatment may be required from your Osteopath. To
fi nd out how Osteopathy can help you contact The Courtyard Clinic on
Attention Humax
PVR owners!
If you own a Humax PVR (Personal Video Recorder) for
Freeview or Freesat and are struggling to set it up or get
used to all the features, then read on...
David of “DH Computing” (Computer Services - see advert below) is
offering a new service in addition to his existing range of computer services.
For owners (or prospective owners) of either the Humax HDR-Fox-T2
(Freeview+) or the Humax Foxsat-HDR (Freesat+), David is now able to
provide advice, setup assistance and tuition to help you get the best out of
these excellent devices.
Unfortunately the supplied manuals are quite vague and hard to follow,
which is where David can help. Similar to Sky+ but with no subscription,
these PVRs for Freeview or Freesat give all the features of Sky+ such as
the ability to pause/rewind live TV and record up to two programmes at the
same time while watching a recording.
A PVR is the only convenient way to record TV once you’ve “gone digital”.
Plus many more features such as home networking access to photos
stored on your PC and BBC iPlayer.
For help, advice or tuition with Humax PVR’s or for help with any computer
problems, David can be reached on 01621 834992.
Don’t Rehome.
Re-think!
By Marc Rudd - Dog Behavioural Specialist
I am often surprised when people ask me if I know of a good home for a
dog. Whilst I understand that many things can change in the day-to-day
lives of us humans, why is it that some are still purchasing a dog for the
look and status, instead of doing the research required to make a decision
about the dog and breed that best fi ts their family and lifestyle situation?
A dog is not a throw-away item and I believe it is a privelage to own such
an animal. You should do everything in your power to make that dog’s life -
a dog you have chosen, taken from its mother and littermates - the best you
can possibly make it.
So please, before you go out and get a dog, do your homework. There is
so much information out there and available on the Internet, so use it.
If you require help with your dog - be it a behavioral
problem or perhaps just some help with exercise and
training, please call me on 07869 736171.
It is aimed at members of staff in local businesses, leisure centres and
shops that come into contact with members of the public as part of their
daily role and will cover an introduction to learning disabilities the best ways
to communicate and how to respond to people with learning disabilities.
A selection of volunteering opportunities
Committee Members for Children’s Centre
Buddies Children’s Centre is a registered charity providing care and
education to pre-school children of all abilities.
They are looking for a volunteer to fi ll the committee role of company
secretary as well as volunteers to become general committee members.
Trustee meetings are held six weekly at the Centre and trustees are
expected to take on some roles outside of the meetings, this is not
envisaged to be more than a few hours per month
Deliver Emergency First Aid
Community First Responders are volunteers who are trained to assist the
Ambulance Service on certain categories of 999 calls. The most common
calls are to people with chest pains or breathing diffi culties.
The critical call is to a cardiac arrest, when the prompt arrival of a First
Responder can save a life. Full training is provided which assumes no
previous knowledge or experience.
Volunteers with a fl air for ingenuity
Remap is a very special charity, working through a nationwide network of
dedicated volunteers. These inspiring people use their ingenuity and skills
to enable people with disabilities to achieve much-desired independence
in some aspect of their lives, or to enjoy leisure opportunities previously
closed to them.
Volunteers are needed to design and make or adapt equipment to help
people with disabilities that is not available commercially.
Mentor a disabled person
Essex Coalition of Disabled people are looking for volunteers to support
disabled people of all ages to achieve a range of goals.
Volunteers are matched to people according to their interests and skills and
goals can range from attending a social group, taking the bus, learning a
new skill - such as cooking or using a computer - or completing an adult
learning course
Volunteers needed at Junk Swap event
The Maldon Baptist Church holds Junk Swap events twice a year to give
people in the town the opportunity to get rid of some of their unwanted
things and often see something they would like. No money changes hand it
is just a simple exchange to help people recycle and stop waste going into
landfi ll. Volunteers are needed to help run these events, simply being there
to help lay out the swap, receive items as they are brought in and tidy away
at the end. Swaps take place twice a year in November and April. The
Forthcoming date is Saturday the 28th of April 10am until 11:30am.
The Rotary Club 0f Maldon
From Alan Higgs
The Queen’s Head on The Quay, was the venue
for a reunion between two members of our
twinned Rotary Club The Rotary Club of Almere
Weerwater, in The Netherlands and our local
Rotary Club of Maldon. The members were
M/s Inez de Rooij who is their club International
Chairperson, accompanied by their President Ger
Bakker. They visited the club to discuss aspects
of the forthcoming Maldon Mud Race, together
with renewing old friendships. Almere Weerwater
have a number of entrants
for this year’s race and if the
weather even approaches
last year’s, we are in for
an enjoyable event from
which our Charities should
benefi t greatly. The Club
also presented Ger Baaker with a painting of The
Mud Race - painted by a member, Rotarian Eddie
April Garden Life by Christine Robson
Lawn care
If you needed to apply moss killer
to your lawn during March, then
providing that the grass and weeds
are growing, now is the time to apply
‘weed and feed’, on dry grass, but
moist soil, on a fi ne still day.
If, after a week or so we haven’t had
any rain then you will need to water
the lawn. Do not cut immediately
before or just after applying weed
and feed.
Pruning
Prune hard Fuchsias by cutting all
stems down to two or three shoots
above ground level. Some people
do cut them to soil level, then they
shoot from the root base.
Remove last year’s heads from
mop head Hydrangeas down to the
1st healthy pair of leaves that are
beginning to shoot. If you have a
lace cap variety, these dead heads
can be removed in the Autumn.
Hydrangea Petiolaris (climber)
does not need regular pruning.
Caryopteris can also take quite a
hard pruning this month.
All Area’s Covered!
Spraying Roses
I am proud to say that until ten years
ago I had never sprayed anything at
all in my garden, either to kill weeds
or control pests. When I retired, I
had more time to look, survey the
damage, and make a decision.
I now use a weed killer on my paths
twice a year, and this year I will be
using lily beetle killer on our new
lilies (It is very time consuming
to squash these little devils when
they appear and I am told they
will indeed hear my footsteps
approaching on the concrete slabs!).
Moving onto rose bushes. They can
be sprayed to prevent several types
of pests. One of the most common
being the Aphid (Greenfl y), also
of course the dreaded black spot.
When the leaves are fully open they
can be sprayed with a deterrent.
Look in your nearest shop that sells
these chemicals. I am not going to
name a brand as some have been
removed from the market in the last
few years. In my rose book I have
about twenty named problems with
roses. There are probably more. We
do still love them though don’t we?
I will fi nish this paragraph by saying
that organic sprays are very much
available.
Here is a message for those of you
who follow the story of my ducks (I
do not have a pond).
Much to my delight at the very end
of February after several months
absence they visited me again. I
have reason to believe they also
visit other gardens in my area. After
waddling up the driveway, across
the grass, they then wait under the
window until I appear.
Much quacking took place until I
appeared with the mixed corn and a
large bowl of water.
They now come everyday. Twice a
day!
Tribute to the brave airmen of World War One
Rare is the Essex country church or churchyard that does not provide
poignant reminders of the local sons who were killed or maimed in one of
England’s many wars. The illuminated cross atop the steeple of St Mary and
St Margaret, Stow Maries, was a gift from a grateful Royal Flying Corps (RFC)
pilot who, unlike so many of his compatriots, lived to tell the tale.
Claude Ridley was on patrol in France in the First World War when set on by
three German Fokkers. Though wounded in the foot, he outfl ew them to make
a safe landing. A bronze plaque on the church chancel arch records: “The
illuminated cross was erected by Squadron Leader Claude A. Ridley D.S.O.,
M.C. First Commanding Offi cer Stow St. Mary’s Aerodrome 1916 with “B”
Flight No. 37 Squadron as a thank offering for the many mercies vouchsafed
him during 1914-1918”. It adds: “And in memory of the very happy days spent
in the county of Essex. Also in loving memory of his father L.C. Ridley who
died 8th June 1925. A neighbouring plaque states: “The reredos and oak fl oor
of this sanctuary were erected to the Glory of God and in memory of (names
here) who made the supreme sacrifi ce 1914-1918. Of your charity pray for
their souls.” Air Marshal Sir Hugh Trenchard unveiled this memorial in 1923.
The names recorded are of local men and three airmen who were buried in the
churchyard. The reredos – a decorative screen behind the altar, usually highly
carved – was taken down in 1999 to reveal the east window. Its memorial
element was replaced by a panel in the west window, engraved with words
from Laurence Binyon’s poem For the Fallen.
It was in 1916 that the village surprisingly became home to the RFC’s 37
Squadron B Flight, whose pilots were tasked with stopping German planes
and the terrifying Zeppelin airships reaching targets in East Anglia and as far
inland as West London. The date of the fl ight’s offi cial deployment to their
hastily built aerodrome on requisitioned farmland, to be known as Stow, was
September 15 when the squadron was formed. (By coincidence it was 24
years to the day – September 15 1940 – in another, arguably more terrible,
war that the RFC’s successor, the Royal Air Force, was to break the German
Luftwaffe in the Battle of Britain). B Flight moved to Flamberds on 29th
September, to accommodation in tents and sheds. The brick buildings were
started in 1918. Known as Stow Maries Aerodrome, it was in fact in Cold
Norton parish. The fi rst sortie from Stow was on May 23, 1917. Ridley, the
fl ight commander, fl ew his fl imsy BE12a fi ghter for three and a half uneventful
hours. Lt. G. D. F Keddie also took up a BE12a, but engine trouble forced him
to land in Suffolk.
37 Squadron’s most famous ‘kill’ was the Zeppelin L48, which was one of
two attacking London on the night of June 17 1917. In all, Home Defence
squadrons fl ew 32 sorties against the airships that night. L48 was set on fi re
and fi nished off after Lt. L.P Watkins, operating from Goldhanger, pressed
home his attack. The crippled airship crashed onto farmland in Suffolk.
Although other pilots were involved in the attack, the War Offi ce decided to
award the “kill” to Watkins. Three Germans survived although one died later.
But let’s rewind to 1916, when war in the air was in its infancy and brave young
men did battle in fl imsy machines that all too often became ‘fl ying coffi ns’. A
telling account of the lives of these idealists, who joined the air services in
the early months of the First World War, many straight from public school,
is contained in the late Alan Clark’s book Aces High. Clark, a distinguished
military historian and outrageously colourful politician, makes the point that in
1914 “conquest of the air was newer, less sure and vested with a still higher
romance than that of space today”. But he points out that although these
fl yers performed acts of incredible bravery and skill, unlike spacemen “ almost
all lost their lives or their sanity”.
The Air Defence of Britain 1914-1918, by C. Cole and E. F. Cheesman,
reminds us “the best remembered pilots of the First World War are the fi ghter
‘aces’, but the great majority of the home-defence pilots remain shadowy,
unknown fi gures. “All too often some technical or weather problem thwarted a
well-executed and promising sortie. The courage of the early pilots, who took
off into fog and cloud knowing that the prospects of a safe return were slender,
recalls Bosquet’s immortal refl ection on the charge of the Light Brigade – ‘c’est
magnifi que, mais ce n’est pas la guerre.’
Seasonal Recipe
Easter lamb with peas
The secret of success in this recipe is to leave the lamb to cook on
a very low heat. Serve with plenty of bread to mop up the sauce.
Ingredients
1kg/2lb 4oz boned lamb shoulder, cut into large chunks
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
150ml/5fl oz extra virgin olive oil
2 onions, roughly chopped
1 large carrot, sliced
1 celery stalk, roughly chopped
5 garlic cloves, crushed
½ x 50g/2oz tin anchovy fi llets
Handful thyme sprigs
1 red chilli, sliced
250ml/9fl oz white wine
25ml/1fl oz white wine vinegar
250g/9oz fresh or frozen peas
400g/14oz potatoes, cut into quarters
200g/7oz cherry tomatoes, halved
Bread, to serve
Preparation
Season the lamb chunks with salt and freshly ground black pepper and
set aside. Heat the olive oil in a large lidded pan and fry the onions,
carrot and celery for 4-5 minutes, or until softened.
Add the garlic, anchovies, thyme and chilli, and continue to cook,
stirring, until the anchovies have almost dissolved into the oil. Add the
lamb chunks and fry for a further 4-5 minutes, or until browned all over.
Stir in the wine and continue to cook until the volume of the liquid has
reduced by half, then add the vinegar. Reduce the heat to low, cover
and simmer gently for 20 minutes.
Add the peas, potatoes and tomatoes, cover again and continue to
cook for about an hour, until the sauce has reduced by half. Serve hot
with plenty of bread to mop up the sauce.
What is Professional
Negligence ?
Individuals and businesses depend on professionals (such as solicitors,
barristers, construction/engineering professionals or fi nancial/tax advisers)
to take good care of important transactions and matters on their behalf. A
reasonable standard of skill and care is the very least that can be expected.
Occasionally a professional will fall below that standard: usually by doing
something that he/she should not have done or by not doing something
he/she should have done. When this happens, the individual or the
business may suffer fi nancial loss. If the cause of the loss is attributable
to the negligent acts or omissions of the professional then a professional
negligence claim may arise.
Bringing a Claim
A professional negligence claim is a complex and specialist area of law.
Consequently, indemnity insurers sometimes use large law fi rms with
considerable experience to try to defeat professional negligence claims.
It is therefore essential that any claim you may make is carefully crafted
and from the outset is handled by an experienced specialist solicitor with
equivalent training, knowledge and experience.
Your solicitor will investigate your claim and provide you with an
assessment of the prospects of success. Your solicitor should seek to
advance your claim by negotiation. However, if negotiations fail it may be
necessary for court proceedings to be commenced. It is important that the
court proceedings present a well structured and well conceived claim to
ensure that the best possible result is achieved.
claims, call James Burkett (recommended in the 2011
The Maldon Mud Race
Since 1973 this quiet port on the river Blackwater has been the home of the annual Maldon Mud Race.
This mad cap dash across the
Blackwater saltings has become a
staple fi xture in the UK, considered
by many to rank alongside the
most eccentric ‘folk‘events like the
Cooper’s Hill Cheese Rolling in
Gloucestershire. However, the good
folk of Gloucester hold their dash for
media fame (and cheese) on what
is usually a balmy day in May. Even
the organisers admit that the Maldon
Mud Race is a ‘totally bonkers’
charity event.
Originally conceived as a challenge
to the landlord of the Queen’s Head
public house by a local resident,
who said he could not serve him a
meal on the saltings of the River
Blackwater while he was dressed
in a dinner jacket. The challenge
was duly accepted and carried out,
resulting in the next year a bar being
opened on the saltings and about
twenty people making a dash across
the river bed, drinking a pint of beer
and then dashing back across the
river to the fi nish line.
As the years passed, so many
wishing to take part caused a logjam
on the saltings due to the time it
took to drink a pint of beer, so part
of the race was discontinued and it
reverted to a dash over the river bed
and back.
The Mud Race was always a very
successful event (from a novelty
point of view if nothing else) and
took place every year from the rear
of the Queens Head Public House
until 1989 when the facilities were
no longer available. It stopped
for several years, despite public
demand to continue.” However,
towards the end of 1993 the Maldon
Carnival Association were looking
to hold a winter event and it was
suggested that the Mud Race could
be revived, with the assistance of
the Lions Club Maldon. On Boxing
Day 1994 the revived Mud Race
took place at the new venue of the
Promenade Park and a fi eld of 52
entrants took part (and survived)
with about 5,000 members of the
public coming to watch the event.”
The novelty attracted competitors
from all over the UK plus an entrant
from Holland and the race was
covered on national TV and by
the national press. Reports were
published as far away as South
Africa, Australia, Kuwait and Japan!
The revised event was designed to
raise money for local charities and
causes and in its fi rst year the Mud
Race raised over £2,500 which was
distributed to three local charities,
the second race took place in 1996
and entries had increased from
52 to 132 - generating £5,419 for
charities. Of this, £1,735 was raised
by entrants through sponsorship for
their own particular charities.
News had spread, and the event
was televised in the USA and
Australia, in 1997 the event attracted
a fi eld of just over 120 registered
competitors and was scheduled
to be held on New Year’s Day, but
freezing weather conditions forced
its cancellation and the event
was later held on Easter Monday.
Concern over safety at Public
Events meant the race was not
staged between 1998 & 2000 and
the Maldon Carnival Association
then decided to abandon the event.
Photo: Tony Worpole - Photoshelter.com
However, an advertisement was
placed in the local paper for
assistance to run the event by
the Mud Race Committee, The
Rotary Club of Maldon contacted
the Committee with the offer of
assistance in conjunction with the
Maldon Lions Club. A meeting was
held and it was agreed to stage
the event on Boxing Day 2001 at
Promenade Park.
The Lions Club of Maldon and the
Rotary Club of Maldon ran this
traditional event in conjunction with
Maldon District Council - Leisure
Services Department for eight years
and its popularity continues to grow.
As a result, 2007 four charities were
nominated to receive a share of
the total funds raised. In fact, 2007
proved to be an exciting year for
both competitors and charities. One
hundred and eighty competitors took
part, with a record crowd lining the
river bank and watching on a big
screen. The nominated charities
also gained, as a record of £40,000
being distributed by the Mud Race
Committee. Due to high tides on
the Blackwater, the 2008 Mud Race
had to be held on Sunday the 4th
of January 2009. Commentary was
done by Ray Clark of BBC Essex
who also did the honours this year.
250 competitors of all sizes and
shapes took part and the Mud Race
for 2008, run at the beginning of
2009, was a huge success with over
£58,000 being raised for charity...”
For the 2009 event it was decided
that the Mud Race become a
charity in its own right, therefore
being able to attract more sponsors
and distribute the money raised for
specifi c projects
Such is the eccentric and madcap
nature of the event that it continues
to attract not only over 10,000
spectators, but also worldwide
media attention. Indeed, it’s not
unusual for television news crews
representing Japanese, Australian
and American channels to be there
with cameras and reporters together
with the BBC and local radio stations
– let alone photographers for the UK
national press and news agencies.
For 2009 the race received prime
time coverage on Chinese television
news. Despite the air temperature
being at 2 degrees Centigrade
and the water at around 1 degree,
the event was a great success,
with over £44,000 being raised
and the money for the three main
charities distributed to date this
exceeds a total of £22,000. To all the
competitors, we can truly say that it
was well worth foregoing that extra
Boxing Day mince pie for!
2010 saw the race again being
organised by Maldon Mud Race
Limited - a registered charity in
its own right, where it was hoped
to emulate the money raised in
previous years. Once again the
organisers confi rmed that Ray Clark
BBC Essex would be compeering,
with Essex County Council and
Redrow Homes continuing their
sponsorship. However disaster
struck, with the race being
postponed due to extreme weather,
meaning the area where the
competitors and spectators would
congregate was unsafe.
It was therefore decided to run
the race at Easter 2011 and what
a result!! The race attracted
celebrities such as Jo Brand and
Sean Lock and a massive crowd of
over 15,000 together with glorious
weather. The event, raising well
over £50,000, with £43,000 being
distributed to local charities.
The event this year will be run on
Sunday 29th April 2012 preceded
by the Annual Plastic Duck race.
Over 250 competitors will run the
race over the 440 yard course
cheered on by a supportive
crowd.
Most competitors will be running
for their nominated charities and
Mud race charities. The crowds will
also have the opportunity to sample
the delights of the many exhibitors
providing games, fancy goods cakes
etc. Come and enjoy a family day
out and support your local charity.
The main race is scheduled to start
at 12.30pm, so come early to claim
your vantage viewing spot or watch
on two large viewing screens.
DIY painting or hire
a professional?
Why hire a professional painter?
Painting may be fun but preparing the surface can be very time consuming,
not to mention dangerous if roofs or double storey buildings are involved.
If time is more important to you than money, hiring a professional painter
may be a smart investment. On the other hand, if saving money is more
important, doing the job yourself will enable you to reduce costs.
Painting is a skilled trade that requires training and appropriate tools
- Professional painters know how to properly prepare the surface, which
paints to use in each situation and how to get the job done quickly with
minimal disruption. Professional painters also have all the tools required to
achieve a quality fi nish.
It can also be dangerous and/or hazardous -
working on ladders and dealing with solvents and
dusts can be hazardous. Older houses may be
coated in poisonous lead paints. Professional
painters know how to handle these dangerous
situations and substances and minimise the
risks. They also have the appropriate safety
equipment to keep you, your family and
themselves safe.
Painting requires cleanup and disposal -
professional painters will take care of these tasks
on your behalf as part of their service.
REVAMP YOUR WINDOWS
New double glazed windows are not
the cheapest improvement but will
save money by reducing fuel bills.
New windows increase the security
of your home too. According to the
Energy Saving Trust, double glazing
can save up to £135 a year on fuel
bulls and can cut carbon emissions
by 720kg a year. If you can’t afford
new windows, repaint existing
costs under £100 and keeps you
cosy plus prevents heat escaping.
LAY A NEW DRIVEWAY
Improving the exterior of your
property will increase your curb
appeal; making it look great and
perhaps boosting the value. Laying a
new drive can achieve this - choose
Make sure it’s laid properly by a
professional to ensure that it lasts.
new kitchen. Even if you can only
afford laminate worktops rather
than granite, as long as it’s quality
and installed by a professional, it’ll
look good. The same goes for new
kitchen or bathroom units – in fact all
furniture can be upholstered, painted
or glossed to reinvent it.
CONVERT YOUR GARAGE
Want a cheap, easy way to increase
your home’s size? Then consider
converting your garage. This rarely
requires planning permission as long
as you’re not increasing the size
of the garage. You can use your
new space for a bedroom, kitchen
extension, offi ce or playroom; add
some plumbing to create an extra
bathroom or en suite.
Time to
tackle the garden?
With the long winter months behind us and Spring on our doorstep, many
of us will be looking forward to enjoying our gardens once again, relaxing
in the sun and entertaining family and friends. After the freezing weather
we have had, hopefully this year will bring plenty of good BBQ weather and
opportunities for kids to get out into the garden and play in the sunshine.
Make the most of outdoor space by creating an area to relax in.Tiling your
patio is relatively inexpensive but should to be carried out by a professional
tiler for best results. Patio tiles come in a range of colours, styles and
materials so whether you fancy natural rustic or brightly coloured, you can
create your ideal outdoor space.
Get the gardener in! Tidying up your garden costs nothing; regular
maintenance like weeding, mowing and weatherproofi ng fences and garden
furniture is also worthwhile. Spending small amounts of time and money on
garden maintenance saves money in the long run rather than waiting until
furniture and outbuildings are in such a state they are beyond repair.
If your garden is not up to scratch, Essex Garden Design - established in
2005 - provides professional gardening services and can help with just a
few hours maintenance to a full renovation of your garden, with everything
from fencing to turfi ng, decking and paving. Owner Sam Hobden explains
“Our aim is to bring every garden, whether small or large, within the
clients reach, creating the perfect outdoor space to compliment each
individual taste and lifestyle. We pride ourselves on working closely with
clients to provide a reliable, professional service with attention to detail in
all aspects of landscaping.”
So, if you are looking to tidy the garden, freshen up existing landscaping
or create a completely new look, Sam can be contacted via the company
website at www.essexgardendesign.com - where you can also view a
portfolio of work and arrange a visit for a free quotation and consultation
(see advert above also).
