Realistically, I go further and say, “Every issue is a Spiritual Issue.” I understand that anyone having difficulty with the existence of whom we believers call “God” will baulk at the notion of “Spirituality”. However I am reminded of a statement from an Alcoholic I once worked with, KC, an Atheist but a member of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). The first of AA’s 12 Steps, has the statement (paraphrased) that Alcoholics must first put their trust and faith in a “Higher Power”. For most people this probably equates to God. Herein lies a major difficulty for Atheists and Agnostics. I have a very simple and profound belief about Alcoholics. Following years of experience working with them, I believe that they are probably the most courageous group of people in the World. Simultaneously, they are probably the most maligned. Back to the story. When I asked KC who was his Higher Power, he said, “The Bondi Bus. It can go past every Pub. I can’t.” You may say that this was a fairly smarty-pants response. However KC, once he had recognised his own powerlessness in this area and that there was a power greater than himself, no matter how limited it was, also realised that there was a world outside himself that he had never encountered. He became one of the greater teachers and counsellors of Alcoholics. He is still an Atheist, or maybe he has moved slightly to Agnosticism. However he no longer uses the “Bondi Bus” metaphor. He has started to use the concept of Spirituality; that somewhere outside himself is a world of non-physical values of meaning, even if it is beyond him, that is open and available to all. CHANGES TO “THEOLOGY IN THE PUB” Groups evolve their own way of doing things depending on the context and who is involved. “Theology In The Pub” is also changing. At its first 2010 meeting, we decided to make some changes. The concept remains the same: an open discussion with an emphasis on the theological and spiritual aspects of the discussion. Everyone is welcome. However it will now be the SECOND SUNDAY OF EACH MONTH. The next meeting is February 14, 2010 at 4pm to about 6pm. It will continue at the LAGUNA WINE BAR but if there is a conflicting event (eg a Grand Final) we may decide to move to “The Pig and Whistle” (the small covered area adjacent to the benches at the Wine Bar) or, perhaps, look for another temporary venue. We also decided to have a specific issue at each meeting. Any subject is valid. Do you have an issue that you would like discussed? There is no censorship. The group members will tell you if you have overstepped the boundaries. If you have an issue or any ideas about presenters, please contact Graham Jackson or Peter McCloy. He is a parishioner of St Michael’s. So he’s done some thinking around the issue.
