LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Members and Friends of the Boulder History Museum,
April 2006
Many exciting and challenging changes which the Museum will see in the next
several years were started in 2005.
Our programs and exhibits, outlined elsewhere in this Report, have been
exciting and successful. The Board of Trustees has been continually amazed at
the efficiency and organization of Nancy Geyer and her staff in planning,
creating and organizing the several exhibits and programs, especially those
related to our current, Ready, Set… Boulder! Colorado’s Sports Mecca, exhibit.
Our staff has devoted many hours to relocating our collection to the newly
acquired storage facility, the Christensen Building.
We were successful in establishing an additional endowment fund for which
your contributions and long-term gifts are always welcome. After lengthy
negotiations with J.P. Morgan, modifications have been made to convert the
distributions from the Christensen Fund to a “total return” basis. As our
audited financial statements reveal, the Museum is fiscally sound.
Our Trustees, our staff, and our membership continue to believe that the
Museum, while preserving the past, must look to the future. To this end, a
Task Force is now planning to assist the Board in the future vision. This is
appropriate as Congress has designated 2006 as the “Year of the Museum”.
We have a dedicated and involved Board of Trustees and we enthusiastically
welcome our new members to the Board. We are pleased to include, among our
nominees, Nancy Geyer as a voting member of the Board with the title of Chief
Executive Officer.
Sincerely,
Karl Anuta
President, Board of Trustees
EXHIBITS
THE YEAR IN REVIEW
Opening Doors, Opening Eyes:
Revealing Boulder’s Treasures
This exhibit, which opened in the fall of 2004,
continued to be on display through the end of
January 2005. The exhibit highlighted some
of the 35,000 artifacts in the Museum’s collection
and also displayed precious
memorabilia from Japanese, Hispanic,
African American and Native
American families that have lived in
the Boulder area for many generations.
This exhibition began a conversation
that we hope will continue
to grow.
Storymakers Moves Upstairs
In the spring we did some major re-organizing of our exhibits
and moved the permanent exhibit Storymakers, A Boulder History to the second floor
of the Museum. This move gave us an opportunity to upgrade
the exhibit and add new sections representing the minority
groups that were highlighted in our Opening Doors, Opening
Eyes exhibit. The newly refurbished exhibit seems to fit better
on the second floor and tells a more complete story of
Boulder’s early years.
Ready, set … Boulder!
Colorado’s Sports Mecca
In October the Museum opened this very exciting
exhibit that highlights the remarkable athletes,
sporting events and sports related businesses that
have played a major role in the Boulder community.
Sections of the exhibit include skiing, mountaineering,
rock and ice climbing, running, cycling,
early sports and more recent sports like snowboarding
and skateboarding. We collected
many items from local athletes,
businesses and sporting events. The
exhibition will be on display until
June 2006.
Library Exhibits
In 2005 the Museum’s exhibit case at the main
branch of the Boulder Public Library housed exhibits
on the Museum’s unique collection of salt and pepper
shakers and square dancing costumes.
PROGRAMS
Museum Programs
The downstairs gallery was open for several months during the late
spring and summer allowing us to hold programs in the Harbeck
House, rather than offsite. Joan Hemm performed a very entertaining
Lucille Ball in “Lost in the 50s with Lucy as Our Guide.” It was a fun
tour through a fascinating decade. We were also very fortunate to host
a talk by Sir John Tiltman, who told the fascinating story of the restoration
of Windsor Castle after the devastating fire that burned much of
the building in 1992.
We initiated a new family program at the Museum during the summer
with two nights of Mork and Mindy Mania. We invited families to bring
their 70s beanbag chairs and dress as their favorite Mork and Mindy character
while watching early episodes of the Mork and Mindy TV series.
Collaborative Programs
Every year we collaborate with the Carnegie Library to host interesting talks on Boulder’s
history. This year we also worked with Historic Boulder on a series of programs called
“Friday’s in the Park.” Each program was held at a different location and was highlighted
by talks on the history of that particular area. The locations were Central Park in Downtown
Boulder, Chautauqua Park and Eldorado Springs.
Annual Boulder History Day
Celebration
Boulder History Day on May 18 th
was another very successful event,
drawing over 750 people. The Museum
once again collaborated with
the University Hill Neighborhood
Association and invited a variety of
groups to perform and present fun
historic programs.
Sports Exhibit Opening
Ready, set…Boulder! Colorado’s Sports Mecca,
our new exhibit on Boulder’s remarkable outdoor
sports community was the jumping off
point for a series of great programs. We invited
over 100 Olympic and World Class athletes
who live in the Boulder area to our grand
opening celebration on October 9 th. Over 230
people crowded into the Museum for the event.
In collaboration with Chautauqua, we hosted
three programs in November and December at
the Chautauqua Community House. ‘Three on
the Rocks’ was a showing of three fun films on
local climbers. Gary Neptune gave a very entertaining narration of
his bold winter assent of Longs Peak in 1972. The other two programs
included the Rocky Mountain Rescue Group and a wonderful
slide presentation by two veterans from Colorado’s Tenth Mountain Division.
SCHOOL AND SCOUT PROGRAMS
Laura Martin, New Curator of Education
We are very excited and fortunate to have Laura Martin on staff as
our new Curator of Education.
Laura joined the BHM staff in August
after receiving her Master’s
Degree from CU in Museum Studies.
She brings much enthusiasm,
lots of energy and great ideas to the
Museum.
School Programs
We expanded our offerings to schools this year and
they have been very successful. We added
more activities including a neighborhood
walking tour, games, portrait photography,
maps and oral histories. Nearly 1,000 school
children visited the Museum in 2005.
FACILITIES
Harbeck House
The maintenance of the Harbeck
House continues to be a priority.
With support from the City’s Parks
Historic Fund, we finally have insulation,
heat and air conditioning
in the attic of the Harbeck House.
That space is now a favorite meeting
area in the building and is
used as an office for our Curator
of Education, as well as for small
groups of students.
Brownie and Girl Scout Programs
Once again our programs for Brownies and
Girls Scouts were a great success. 275 girls attended
programs at the Museum and the Carnegie
Library to earn badges on topics including
Folk Arts, Local Lore and Listening to the
Past.
COLLECTIONS
New Collections Storage Facility
In July 2005 we purchased a 12,000 square foot
storage facility to house the Museum’s extensive collection
of over 35,000 historic artifacts. The space
consists of four condominium units. In the fall we
retrofitted two of the four units (7,000 sq. ft.). We will
move the collection in four phases between January
and June 2006. The other two units will be leased
until we are ready to expand into them. Our current
storage facility is only 3,000 square feet and is not
adequately climate controlled. The new facility will
allow us to spread out our collection and store it in a
proper environment and under professional museum
standards. This is a major step for the Boulder History
Museum in continuing our responsibility to collect
and preserve the history of our community.
New Storage Facility Under Construction
Old Warehouse
New Collections Storage Facility
New Acquisitions
In 2005 we added some interesting objects to the Museum’s collection. These include
some wonderful WWII posters from Laurence Paddock, a 16 foot long,
1,000 pound, Crossroads Mall sign, a sign from the Penny Lane Coffee House
and a fascinating dress from the Nomad Theatre with Daily Camera articles
printed all over it. In the fall of 2005 we put a moratorium on accepting new acquisitions
until we finish our move into our new Collections Storage Facility. Potential
donors are asked to hold on to their gifts until after October 2006 when
our normal collection policy practices will resume.
FUNDRAISING
In 2004 the Boulder History Museum received a challenge grant from the LMC Community
Foundation to establish an endowment to support Museum operations. The challenge
period ended in July 2005 and we are pleased to announce that we met our goal
of building the fund to $410,000. We will continue to grow this endowment to insure
that the Museum has operating support on a continual basis. This endowment will provide
the Museum with a consistent stream of funds to support annual operations.
In addition to our endowment, we secured $5,600 in sponsorships from local companies
for our sports exhibit and $8,000 from the Scientific and Cultural Facilities District
(SCFD) for general operating support.
ATTENDANCE
The exhibits and programs at the Boulder History
Museum in the last couple of years have been
highly successful and have boosted and diversified
our annual attendance. In addition, the
press coverage the Museum has received has
been very positive. In the past year we have had
stories in the Boulder Daily Camera, the Denver
Post/Rocky Mountain News, The Colorado Daily,
5280 and Fit Magazine.
