<strong>2011</strong> Y<strong>2011</strong> YEARIN REVIEWIn addition to the permanent exhibit, Storymakers, the <strong>Boulder</strong> <strong>History</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> presents two tothree new exhibits every year in the Harbeck House galleries. Some of these exhibits are developedby the <strong>Museum</strong> staff and focus directly on the people, events, businesses and activities of the<strong>Boulder</strong> area. Others are traveling exhibits that are on loan from other museums. While these mayhave a broader historical focus, we use artifacts and photographs from our collection to illustratethe connections to our local history.<strong>Color</strong>ado Takes Off!Celebrating 100 Years of Flight in <strong>Color</strong>adoAugust 27, 2010 — February 6, <strong>2011</strong>This traveling exhibit introduced visitors to theinteresting personalities and fascinating events from<strong>Color</strong>ado's rich aerospace history. It highlighted<strong>Color</strong>ado’s impact on national and internationalaerospace technology. Families enjoyed theAviator’s Discovery Room with hands-on activitiesand aeronautic dress-up.Treasures of NOAA’s ArkFebruary 18, <strong>2011</strong> — April 17, <strong>2011</strong>Treasures of NOAA's Ark showcased artifactsrepresenting science, service and stewardshipby the National Oceanic and AtmosphericAdministration and its ancestor agencies. Itincluded 19th century maps and charts as wellas early scientific instruments that recall theagency’s proud heritage and legacy of service tothe nation.


ON DISPLAY1968 in AmericaSeptember 1, <strong>2011</strong> — December 31, <strong>2011</strong>This thought provoking traveling exhibithighlighted one of the most tumultuous,pivotal and influential years in our nation'shistory. The exhibit focused on four majorthemes, the Power of Idealism, the Powerof Music, the Power of the Bullet, and thePower of the Press. The <strong>Museum</strong> alsocustomized the show by adding content thatlinked national events with local <strong>Boulder</strong>history.HALLWAY & OFF-SITE EXHIBITSOne Big, Happy (Global) Family: <strong>Boulder</strong>’s Sister CitiesHigh Altitude Archaeology of <strong>Boulder</strong> CountyCelebrating <strong>Boulder</strong> County’s SesquicentennialPS: A <strong>Boulder</strong> Phantom Sculptor MysteryPutting <strong>Boulder</strong> to Work in the 1930s<strong>Boulder</strong>’s Gone to the Dogs!Hats of <strong>Boulder</strong> County<strong>Boulder</strong> Pow Wow1968 in <strong>Boulder</strong>Nature of DogsPhotographs by Mary LudingtonMay 1, <strong>2011</strong> — August 14, <strong>2011</strong>In this exhibit photographer Mary Ludingtoncaptured the true nature of dogs, their beauty,character and spirit. The striking collection ofphotographs offered a glimpse of the dogs in theirelement-whether caught in midstride or in anhour of well-earned repose. The exhibit alsoincluded a slideshow of <strong>Boulder</strong>’s favorite pets.5


SCHOOLPROGRAMSIn <strong>2011</strong> close to 600 students participatedin education programs led by museum staffand volunteers without ever leaving theirclassroom. The <strong>History</strong> to Go van bringseducational opportunities to the students ofBVSD through programs such as Dia de losMuertos, or Day of the Dead, whichcelebrates the Mexican holiday of honoringthe passing of loved ones. In addition, the<strong>Museum</strong> brought other programs out toschools such as <strong>History</strong> Detectives.In <strong>2011</strong>, 1,235 students participated in tours ofthe <strong>Museum</strong>’s exhibits and engaged in hands-onactivities which further strengthened the conceptsthey learned while on the tour. In addition to<strong>Boulder</strong>’s early history, students had anopportunity to learn about the history of flight in<strong>Color</strong>ado, NOAA, photography and dogs, and1968 in America.


GIRLSCOUTSFor over 10 years local Girland Boy Scouts have turnedto the <strong>Museum</strong> as a sourcefor earning badges. In <strong>2011</strong>,312 scouts participated inthe <strong>Museum</strong>’s educationalprogramming.Girl Scout badges such at Local Lore and Listening to thePast are natural fits for the <strong>History</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> becausescouts are required to participate in local history byvisiting historical buildings and cemeteries, play gamesfrom the past and listen to community stories.In May local Girl Scouts attendeda day long Dog Camp and evenvisited the local animal shelter.Girl Scouts ona UniversityHill walkingtour. Behindthe scouts is thehistoric Norlinhome.HISTORYDETECTIVESAfter a tour of the museum and its exhibits students engage with historical artifacts, photographs,newspapers and clothing to delve deeper in to the history of <strong>Boulder</strong> and the region.7


ADULTSAND FAMILIESConversations with Extraordinary PeopleThis very successful speaker series presents theinnovative people, events, research and businesseswhose connection with <strong>Boulder</strong> has helped shapedthis community as a remarkable place. The <strong>Boulder</strong><strong>History</strong> <strong>Museum</strong> hosted nine <strong>Boulder</strong> Conversationswith Extraordinary People programs in <strong>2011</strong> with over750 people in attendance. The 3rd annual series washeld once a month between September and May atthe Chautauqua Community House.Sonny Flowers & BHM’s CEO Nancy Geyer1968 Program SeriesThroughout the fall of <strong>2011</strong>, in conjunctionwith the 1968 in America exhibit, the <strong>Museum</strong>co-hosted around town a series of 1968themed book discussions, laser light shows,movies, dance parties and speaker programs.Over 900 people attended these events. Theyincluded the ‘Beatles Sgt. Pepper’s’ laser lightshow, ‘Backstage Past: Talk & Book Signingby Barry Fey’ and a paneldiscussion on ‘Where was<strong>Boulder</strong> in 1968? The Groovy,The Badge, The Drafted &The Radical.’<strong>History</strong> TalksThroughout the year the <strong>Museum</strong> offereda variety of programs in partnership withthe Carnegie Library for Local <strong>History</strong>.Subjects included ‘The Holubar Family &<strong>History</strong> of Mountaineering Gear in<strong>Boulder</strong>’ and ‘Around Nederland withKay Turnbaugh.’ More than 200 guestsattended these programs.


Neighborhood Walking Tours &<strong>Boulder</strong> Creek Bike TourOver the summer the <strong>Museum</strong> offeredwalking tours of University Hill and a new<strong>Boulder</strong> Creek Bike Tour in conjunctionwith <strong>Boulder</strong> Walk & Bike Month. A brochuremap of the history bike tour is available atthe <strong>Museum</strong>.Dog Daze of SummerFamily DayA summer family day at the <strong>Museum</strong> featuredMan's Best Friend in conjunction with theexhibit, Nature of Dogs! Activities included:Agility Course for AmateursHumane Society Pet Care CruiserService Dog demonstrationsDoggie Treat Bar & Cooking DemoCrafts and Stories for Kids4rd <strong>Annual</strong> <strong>Boulder</strong> Mystery Challenge: East Pearl Street EditionThe <strong>2011</strong> <strong>Boulder</strong> Mystery Challenge fundraising event took over East Pearl Street and theOdd Fellows Lodge. On a beautiful <strong>Boulder</strong> evening, teams riddled it out for their chance toearn the title of <strong>2011</strong> <strong>Boulder</strong> Mystery Champions!The <strong>2011</strong> scavenger hunt winners claimtheir delicious prizes provided by Concertosin Chocolate.Need a Clue?East Pearl Street restaurantsprovided delicious fare forthe evening festivities. VOLUNTEERSIn <strong>2011</strong>, more than 60 <strong>Museum</strong> volunteers logged 2,796 hours helping with school tours,scout and outreach programs, special events, research, exhibits, collections documentation,and serving on the Board of Trustees and <strong>Museum</strong> committees. THECOLLECTIONThe Collections Department was very active in <strong>2011</strong> with much progress made at the ChristensenStorage Facility. A total of 2,273 new artifacts from 28 donors, many from the Daily Camera,were brought into the collection.Some of the <strong>2011</strong> acquisitions include : an 1877 Emerson Square Grand Piano donated by theWilson-Johnson family a telephone switchboard and equipment from theUniversity of <strong>Color</strong>ado numerous household items, electronics and a 1950s exercisebike from CU Professor H. Peter Metzger’s Estate a wonderful hat collection from local <strong>Boulder</strong> millinerOpal Pastore’s Estate table, chairs and service setting from Juanita’s Restauranta vast collection of printing plates, bound volumes of the<strong>Color</strong>ado Daily and other items associated with the DailyCamera newspaperCollections CareWe added eight new shelving units to provide additional storage for our growing collection.11
