Columbus discovered Po:1tl Belo on his last voyage and it became
the most important port for shipping Peruvian gold to Spain and
the associated trade fairs for hundreds of years. A l this wealth
attracted pirates. notably Drake in 1 570 and Morgan a century
Iater. Porto Belo was attacked numerous times and the ruins of the
3 forts can still be seen. Also in town is the restored Customs
Building that is now a museum. Port) Belo is a picturesque town.
The lirst night in port Victor visited us in his dugout canoe. He
came aboard and tried to sell tls J'ewelry and invited us to his house
for tish dinner. only $3.()0. W e went at sundou'n and w'andered
through town w'ith Victor as guide. W e drank beer while waiting
lbr the lisherman to come back with the catch of the day. Victor
cleaned the lish. some porgies and a sierra. Then Nils and Kaqji
cooked the fish- the rice. and the plantains. Victor couldn't eat with
us because we used al the plates and utensils l1e had.
W e stayed there a couple ol' days then sailed to Isla Grande where
we anchored overnight. Then we spent alluost 2 weeks in the San
Blas Islands. W e snorkeled. ate lobster. crab. and lisl that Nils
killed, socialized with other cl-uisers. and talked to the Kuna who
always came buy in their dugout sailing canoes
with something to sel. I spent every remaining
dollar ()n handicrafts. I slit a finger on a thick
spiky crab shel when we w'ere shucking the
crabmeat. W e got wise and used gloves and a
hanlmer to bash the crab shell into submission
the next time. There was lots of rain and lightning
bul solne good days as wel.
Nils and Katja were another good crew. l hardly
ever cooked. They did most of it. They worked
well as a team. They liked to work the boat.
Katja became a pretty good helmsman. We had
lots of fun discussions with lots of laughter.
Katja is quite cute in a pixie sort of way. Nils
has looks that appeal to women and gay men.
He has blond hair, a tlashing smile, chiseled
features, slim waist. broad shoulders- and a tight
butt. He told stories about homosexuals in Central
America passing him on the street and kissing
him on the neck. I guess they were just overw'helmed
by his beauty. M ust watch out for
those valnpires.
W e spent a Iot of tilne in the water. The coral and fish were awesonle.
I saw a tam on and a spotted eagle ray, as w'el as the tlashy
reef fish. Nils saw sharks and banucuda as well.
Al our last anchorage I w'as the only American. There were four
Italian boats. two Austrian boats. a German boat. and a French
boat. On of the Austrian boats was 'Tanoa' . a heavily customized
and beautitblly tinished W han'am Pahi 42 catamaran. Roman built
it over nine years and is sailing solo at the moment. W e had a good
visit on 'Tahiari' and 'Tanoa' one afternoon. It was great to conzpare
notes. I was interested t) lind out that Tahiarii's perfonnance
B'as about the same as other cats of the same class.
In this anchorage there w'as an island to the south. a reef to the
west- another reef to the east. and another island some ways off to
the north. It looked prety snug and protected until our last night
when the anchor dragged and then it felt like a trap. The lirst thing
we knew about the problelu was that the boat bumped something
in the dark.
W e all rushed out on deck to Iook around. I don't like things that
go bump in the night. The wind was blowing 20 to 25 knots out of
the west. Nils noticed the rudder was bumping up and down in its
gudgeons. W e looked dow'n and the smld bottom was clearly visible
in the tlashlights. l started the engine. lowered the prop. and we
roared off the beach into the night. Nils and Katja cranked the
w'indlass to raise the anchor while the boat went charging about.
The neighboring boats turned on their navigation lights so I could
see them. I was very worried about the invisible reef that was directly
up w'ind of us. I watched the depth finder like my life depended
on it. because it did.
Every time I slowed down the wind pushed the bows downwind
toward the other boats and I would pour on the fuel and with maximum
rudder detlection. Finaly we ran out of room so I slammed
into reverse and the bows came around into the wind because of
the anchor drag. W e went roaring of in the other direction away
from the boats. The anchor was up by then and we dropped it in
deep water. let out lots of line, and prayed it would hold. It did, but
we were again in shalow water. 6 feet, I rigged the fisherman
anchor and Nils and 1. wearing lifejackets, loaded the alchor and
chain in the dinghy and took it out as far as we could to the northwest
and dropped it over the side. Back on board we hauled in the
line to the second anchor as far as we could. This hauled the boat
into deeper w'ater. W e felt much more secure with two anchors out.
Finally I got tired of waiting for a favorable weather w'indow'. W e
picked up the two anchors and motored out of there. W e slogged
through two days of headwinds and waves on the engine to get to
Cartagena and the last night we were down to 2 knots but the wind
let up in the morning and we were able to get into port in daylight
and even had some fuel Ieft over. about 7 gallons. 'Fhis trip convinced
me that I couldn't go against the winds to Venezuela.
W e rescued a couple of guys that dulnped their kayak in the bay
outside of town and towed the swamped kayak to a beach where
the guys jumped in the water and swam it to shore. We anchored at
Club Nautico M arina and had dinner. W e drank cold beer (first one
on the house. 70 cents thereafter, W elcome to Cartagena) and I had
filet mignon ($5,* ) while Nils and Katja had hamburgers. The
next day. after we had our laundry cleaned, Nils and Katja left the
boat (hugs al around) and moved to the luxury of a private room
with a giant fan in a hostel. I went back to the boat and baked cornbread
for the Independence Day potluck. The cornbread was a big
h it.
Nils and Katja must have enjoyed their time aboard because they
came back a couple of days Iater to visit and take pictures on
'Tahiari'. Then they left (hugs again) to tour Colulnbia.
Cartagena is a modern city with an historical district 500 years old.
It is the safest spot on the Spanish M ain. The women are beautiful
and the people are friendly.
l might be here a while, as in November.
Al'ter 9 months in Europe w'e returned to Trinidad and to
''Anna Slphia' ()n J;m .7th. W e had hauled her out in the boatyard
''P()B.'er Btlats-i. Chaguaramas in M arch 2413. The rainy season of
last year had luckily been drier than usual and so we tbund the
cabins conlpletely dry inside and no smell at all. Unfortunately the
ctlckpit had sul'fered in the tnlpical environ lent. Through cracks
il1 the varnish layer water had lbund its w'ay mainly into parts
Ilade ()t' solid w'(4tld. W e had to dril oul the roten material with a
'-Dremel'- tool and jil the holes w'ith epoxy / silica. The w'eather
becalut a problenl. The dry season should have staned already but
we had tropical shtlwers nearly every day. As w'e had iumped from
a1 Austrian w'inter of Ininus l ()0C to plus 300C.' and nearly l ()()%
lunlidity we tlsed up a week t() adapt. So it tlok us 6 weeks t) get
For us the nonh of Tobago is the licest pal4 of the
Eastern Antiles as t'ar as we know' theln. The pretiest bay is
Englishnlan's Bay. The strtlng currents around the island are a
seritlus probleln for swinlluers. That's why most tourists stay in
the southwest where the Bucoo Reef shelters the beaches.
Back il1 Chaguaramas we Iuckily had 2 dry days to do
(he necessary varnishing job. Meanwhile a W harram had tunled up
in ''Ptlwer Blats-'. a Pah ' i 42. The Gerlnan owners Rolf and
Susanne l'ro l D isseldort' had left it on a nlooring in Carenage Bay
Yachtclub for 2 years. During this time the pelicans took over and
the btlat ltloked like a tloating guano island. Rolf renamed it
'Pelican Inn&'. W hen they invited us tbr dilner the biggest part of
the excrktnlents ()f the birds was already remtlved. This was the last
Brharranl we nlet that season.
0 1 Feb. I 9th otlr boat was launched by travel lift. As no
l'ntlring was available in Chaguaralnas Bay we I'noved
Carenage Bay w'here anchoring is much safer. On Feb.20th we
cleared (lutu'ards and set sails late in the evening for the Testigo
Islands ( Venezuela). W e slipped out 01* the Gulf 01' Paria through
Btltla de Navios, one (lutlet oI' the so called Dragon' s M outh (Boca
de l's Dragtlnes) into a dark moonless night, our navigation lights
tlnlit and the radar retlector dow'n as the north coast of Venezuela
w'est of Trinidad has a bad reputation for piracy. W ith
ntlrtheasterly wind of I 5 kn and a current setting to west w'ith
about l .5 kn it w'as easy sailing and we reached the Testigos next
day at noon. This small group of islands looks like a M exican
cacttls Iandscape and one w'tlnders how people can make their
living here. W e visited the coastguard on Isla Iguana and were
allowed to stay for 3 days. lnward clearing is nllt possible here.
Then we anchored in front 01- the Iarge beach of -Breakthrough
Bay-' ( Pltya Real ) where the lslalds of Testigo Grande and
Ttlstigt) Pequeno are only divided by a few nzeters o1- w'ater.
Next day we relaxed. The day af'ter in the nlorning I w'ent
sntlrkeling and saw' that the anchor rtlde had been caught under a
coral head. Gundi started the engine to take the pul from the rode.
Al1 of a sudden the engine sagged down a litle. Main parts of the
suspension had broken and the engine was ntlw' held t'nly by the
rod that shifts gear. The engine is a Yamaha 9.9 hp lburstroke
ultralongshaft outboard mounted in an engine wel în the celtre of
the cockpit (centre of' gravity of the boat ). W e secured the engine
with a rope and then I set one of our two Fortress anchors. took the
pull out of the main anchor (a Gennan B igel) and freed the rode.
Now we lashed the engine's head tightly to the engine wel and
fixed a bridle to the shaft just above the propeler. The 2 ends of
the bridle were tixed on clamps on the aftdeck of both huls. So the
pull 01' the propeler w'as Ied to the hulls. But we could only use
lbrward gear.
Next morning we Ieft the anchorage under sails. The
w'ind was down to l 0 kn and as we could not raise the propeler
above w'aterlevel we were very slow. W e w'anled to reach the bay
01' Porlanlar on Isla de M argarita in daylight. As the B'ind went
further dow'n in the afternoon w'e had to start tle elgine although
w'e had planned to use it only for anchoring. To tlur relief the
Iashings worked wel and we even managed a speed ol' 7 kn.
Shortly afterwards we caught the tirst lish of the season - a bonito.
by trolling. W e reached Porlamar in last daylight and anchored
next to -Athenaeum-%- the M otldy of our friends Josef and M aria
fronl Salzburg. W e had met them Iast time last M ay in Austria and
they had encouraged us to come to Venezuela. The long evening
became morning and it was 4 o'clock when we went to bed.
Two days later Josef and I took the engine apal and
M ichel. a French Suisse who repairs nearly everything for the
sailrs here in Porlamar knew somebody u'ho could B'eld
alulninium and had access tt' a trustworthy equipnlcnt. To nly
great surprise I could put the engine tilgether a t'ew' days later.
Life in Venezuela is cheap and as Mltrgarita is a duty
free area this island is even cheaper. Fuel costs next to nothing.
M any European bachelors ended up herc with or without boat due
to the low liquor prices and the liberal views of the Ilcal w'onlen .
People are fliendly and in the shops and restatlrants nobody tries to
cheat. But security is a problem like in nlany Latin American
countries fmd you must be on alert. A pertkct paradise does not
exist.
In each new harbour it takes some time to conle to knou'
w'hat can be done where and what c:m be bought w'here tbr the best
price. Through the help 01' Josef an M aria we could sholel this
time considerably. On the first day they already introduced us to
the German -beer club--. On a beach in the vicinity near a dinghi
dock that is reckoned safe when you lock the dinghi onto the
construction by steel cable and padlock sonle locals have instaled
Plrlalnar seemed good since the people who earn good money
t'rtlnl the sailors organised an armed security service that patrolled
the area at night in a fast dinghi. Anyway dinghis were stolen from
tilne to time. The thieves are only interested in strolg outboards.
The rubber dinghies themselves were set adrift and sometimes
reclvered (1 the westel-n shore of the bay. It is a rule to take the
dinghy aboard before sunset. The 3.5 hp Tohatsu of our litle
Bolnbard dinghi was lot what they were after. A few days before
klur second visit to Porlamar an armed robbery happened. The
skipper was an Austrian. The robbers w'ere after his expensive
videt) equiplnent and a gun. Rumor said that the coastguard was
invtdlved as they had controlled the boat thoroughly the day before.
Then the rtlbbers knew exactly 1()8. to lind what. A mistake of the
sk ipper was to anchor in some distance to the rest of the boats. In
general it is more dangerous in Venezuela the longer you stay in an
anchlrage and the nlore expensive your boat lotlks. Stll1ze sailors
take w'tlnlen (lnboard tklr the night and don't pay af'terwards. This
B'tluld be dangerous everywhere.
Venezuelans are a mixture of Europeans. Africans and
Indil's and the result is very pretty. You donft feel racial
anilnosities. very much in contrary to the Eastern Antilles. As they
gtlt rid (41' their colonial power Spain as early as the tirst half of the
l 9th ccntury they are plliticaly very self contident. They show an
tlI)el atitude t() sex. Bathing nude in a public beach is nl't done but
lhe arelt ()1' (he bikinis can be measured in square centilueters and
even highly pregnant women w'ear them. Children abound and lnen
& wtlmcn treat them friendly. Tbeir t'athers or the current
btdyl'riends of their mothers care for them in public. W omen lik'e to
sl1()B' their lkmale atractions also in tleir every day outlit. If a
IlaI1 shtpw's his appreciation they take notice with a smile. Aids
seems n()l to be a big problem. On remtlte parking areas you see a
ctlmlklrting anltlunt (,1* used condoms.
W here ever we had met Anlericans in anchorages ()1'
btlatyards st) far they were friendly. helpful and (lpen minded and
usualy ntlt very happy with their current gtlvernnlent and the w'ar
in Iraq. In Porlamar we came to know a completely different
species. Apparently their reason for living here are the Iow prices.
They calle dtlw'I1 from Florida island hopping and avoiding open
B'ater w'here ever ptlssible and they w'tluld have held hands aIl the
tilne il' that u'otlld be possible between yachts. Now' they found
thcmselves in a w'orld that speaks exclusively foreign. You Inet
thenl always in big grllups and even if you exchalged a few words
it never became a real ctlntact but their w'omen communicated
excessively on VHF.
In nlid M arch Athenaeum Ieft us with 3 Austrian charter
guests. ()n M trch 1 9th (lur daughter Barbara and our son in law.
Hannes jtlined us for two weeks. In the lnorning of March 22nd we
Ief't the bay ot' Porla lar and sailed westwards with the tradewind.
W e passed the islands, Coche and Cubagua and headed for the
western tip ('f the peninsula 01' Araya. W hen we rounded a beacon
(,1* Pulta de Araya our Simrad/Navicl' tillerpilot TP3()0 stopped
w'tlrking. Later on it turned out that saltwater had made its way
int) the electronic at one of the litle acrylic glass w'indows that
clver the LEDS and had corroded it. W e were very angry as il was
the third time an autopilt't of this type had failed on -Anla
Sophia-'.
N()w' w'e sailed to SSE parallel to the w'estcoast ()1- the
peninsular ('f' Araya. As the apparent wind went up to 24 kn we put
a reef' into the main. Shortly afterwards the peninsular shielded us
ctllnpletely from the wind and we had to start the engine. At 4 pm
B't rcached the entrance tt) the Golfo de Cariaco and from now 01
had t() g() directly to windward on engine power only. Thc boat
The Sea People Issue 58 Decenlber 2(:34 * @
was pitching heavily and we made (lnly 2 kn heading easth'ard.
The Golfo runs from west to east approx. 25 nn1 long and 5 wide.
On the south bank of the entrance lies Cumana. f'amous tbr its high
crinzinal rate. capital ol' Sucre, the poorest state of Venezuela. For
sailors the main atraction in the Golfo is Laguna Grande deI
Opisbo- a fjord that reaches deep into the nonhcoast with it's many
arms. W e headed for the much smaler Lagula Chica l .5 lniles
west of Laguna Grande. As we were so slow we didn't reach it
befbre nightfall. W e had the coordinates ol' a waypoint south of the
entrance and reached it by help ol' (lur GPS. W hen we slowly
approached the coast I sat in the tranlpoline our searchlight in
hand. Suddenly a slope became visible conling dow'n f'ronl right t)
left and so the position of the entrance was clear. A Iight was
switched on. A French sailor w'ho lives on his btlat near the
entrance of the lagoon had noticed us and had lit his decklight.
Now anchllring was just routine and then w'e eljoyed a lneal and
the fact that the enervating pitching was over.
Next lnolming w'e realised the idyllic sunxlunding. The
shores were covered with intensive green Illangroves with a feh'
huts and coconut palms in the back. The slopes rising l'rom the
water were part 01' a ban-en red desel scenery. Tle t'renchnlan
visited us in his dinghi. The third yacht il1 the bay was Italian. W e
stayed tbr tw'o days and then nloved to the eastnlost pan 01- Laguna
Grande. W hen we tried to set the anchor in reverse gcar the engine
junlped up. The weldings were broken and so w'e had to reneB' the
lashings and had to rely on them lbr the rest ol- this saililg season.
Later in the morning two children in a small rowing boat
oftkred us fresh mussels and we bought thenl. Later on we were
ttld that the fishermen send their children to avoid to be shot by
sailtlrs scared of pirates. In the afternoon Athenaeuln entered tle
lagoon, anchored next to us and invited us tbr dinner. They left
again next morning and we went ashore in the al'ternoon. clinlbed
one of' the surounding hils and enjoyed the scenery. As l'ar as we
could see v'Anna Sophia- was the only boat in the Iagotln. The
shores are uninhabited w'ith the exception 01- a lisherlnal's camp in
the far west and theretbre lack 01' ctlconut paltls but are covered
with mangroves. T le slopes above are barren with the exception
of a lkw cactus plants and show the deep red colour t't' Iaterite soil.
Further east on the peninsular the high mountains nlake up a
dramatic background. As the area cal only be reached iI1 a private
boat it has preserved its splendor and loneliness s() far.
The following Inorning we went 25 nm westward to the
fiord 0f Mochima. We had expected a pleasant sail with the
tradewind but there was no w'ind at all and so we had to use the
engine. W e anchored in a snlall sandy bay on the eastern shore of
the (jord. The beach was crowded w'ith Venezuelan holidaymakers
who were brought out there by Iocals in their fast pirogues from
the vilage of Mochima. On the slope behind the beach the Iocals
had built sunshelters and here their wonlan served fish and icecold
beer. W e went ashore and enjoyed the lbod. the beer and the w'hole
situation around us.
Mochima fjord is the eastenl boundary of the lature
reserve of M ochima that reaches as far west as Puerto Ia Cruz. It is
a Iabyrinth of mainland bays and islands. the islands ban'en and thc
mainland dry bush. W e anchored for one day near the village of'
Mochima and then went around the peninsular on the westelm side
of the fjord and anchored in the nanow bay E1 Oculto over bow'
and stern opposite the island Venados. Here the q'ater above a
coral reef is clear which is unusual 01 the Venezuelan coast and so
snorkeling is excellent.
The day after we passed the islands Velados and
Caracas on the way to the Golfb de Santa Fe. AlI over the reserve

W e started early and reached Cunlana with next to no
wind went up to 36 kn. The boat speed went up t() 7-8 kn.
W e headed for lsla Cubagua. After we had rounded the
beacon off Punta de Araya we had to take the sails dtdM.'l1 and batle
to windward under engine power. For 5 hours we were restricted to
2 kn and reached the SW -tip of the island shortly beftlre sunset. On
the way t() the anchorage in Ensenada de Charagat) the sun w'ent
down but it was n() problem to find an conveniant place in the big
sandy bay. This eveling we could receive the BBC world service
on shortwave clearly and as it was 1 st of M ay already in Europe
we got the lirst reptlrts 01' the celebratitlns ()t' the enlagement of the
EU from 1 5 to 25 menlbers.
W e used the next day for a rest and then stalcd for the
last leg shortly after midnight. W e expected a long batle against
the tradewind but nlanaged t() reach the bay of Porlamar at 6 am.
The bay had changed completely. Huge numbers of' cornllrants.
pelicans and frigate birds had an-ived as the sardine run had
reached M argarita. That night 3() tons oI- tuna had ended up in the
sardine nets and one ()1' tleln l'tluld its way into otlr l'rying pan.
After we had stocked tlp our pnlvisiols B'e sai led back
westwards along the southctlast of' M argarita as l'ar as Punta de
hauld out in M arina del Caribe whicl is actualy ël btlatyltrd rtln by
a frenchnàan. Phlippe Philippart- a tbrnler helicopter pilot. Storage
of' lnultihulls is rather expensive here but as we could convince
Philippe that our slnal Tiki had to be charged Iike a I'ntlnohull we
decided to leave the boat here. Alternatives w'ould have been the
lnarinas in Pueno la Cruz or Navinlca in Ctlnlana. M any sailors
had wanled us not to choose Navinlca.
Chacachacare is situated in the driest Ctrea of s'lftrgarita
il'l lhe Iuiddle of nowbhere. The latter reduces the risk ot' theft.
During night a w'atch lan w'ith gun and dogs is t)I1 duty. Ol' t-tlurse
ln P raise of Sm aller W harram s
The Pros and C ons of Sm aller and Lighter Boats
Pro: Better sailing
Changing to a smaller lighter boat almost always results in better
I sailing. The truth is: Light air is more common than heavy air and
I most sailors tend to avoid heavy-air days.
Pro: Lower Ioads, less m uscle required
'
. Smaler and lighter boats don't generate the same Ioads as heavier
; boats, meaning that they don't require the same strength and you
don't have to musele things as mueh.
Pro: Crew not required
Smal boats don't require crew. Rounding up people to go sailing
is a never-ending problem. Also, smaller lighter boats make single
handling nlore of an option. There are few things as rewarding as
spending an afternoon sailing by yourself. W here crew' is required.
less are needed and their needs place less demand on owner/
skipper.
Pr(): Advantages of high-tech
Smaler and lighter boats benetit more from recent technological
advances, ranging in improvements in sail shape and cloth to composite-ctlnstruction
techniques. f 50- l 00 worth of carbon tibre
lnakes nlore dramatic changes on a 1 6-2 I ' boat, than on a bigger
boat.
I
Pro: Building
I Smaler and lighter boats wil be tinished quicker, thus you'll be
sailing stloner.
. Pro: Cost
. N() brainer here. Less investnlent in initial craft plus less cost for
aII her equipluent too !
f
1 Con: High-motion boat
A lighter boat tends to be m ore active in the water and the
I motion is not as friendly. A disadvantage ()f downsizing is
I that the rapid motion of light boat is tougher on the stom -
Iach.
il Con: Low payload capability :
Lighter boats can't carry payload as their heavy cousins can. '
Even if you cruise only occasionally, you wil still need to
. load up the boat with provisions and gear, which can etfec-
! tively spoil the boat's performance.
Con: Narrow structural tolerance
Smaller and Iighter boats need to be well engineered and
constructed to nzaintain the sam e structural quality of heavy
boats.
Con: W orld cruising dem ands for comfort and seaworthiness
If you do actualy sail around the world, chances are you
would probably enjoy it more on a heavier boat. Speed is
I relatively unim portant on a world cruise, whereas com tort
I x
and seaworthiness are prim e design tactors to consider.
p Con: Faster passages
' Slower average speeds will be m aintained on smaller vesl
sels in the higher wind ranges.
It's at about this point the Cons run out of steam .
So IF enlugh ot' the pros apply and you can live with sonle of the cons . a smaler lighter vessel might be the order of the day.
But in the end it comes down to our need. Do I need a 40- world cruiser when I just want to sail local waters? Can I aflbrd it at present?
So our choice of boat depends on so many diflkrent things. There's always the danger that with our dreams of sailing the oceans of the
w'orld we overlook the pleasure to be derived from getting a day sail in the bay. W ith this is mind you-l find the next l 2 pages dedicated to
the smaler but non Iess worthy W harram boats the classic M aui- Hitias. M elanesia and Tiki 2 l fllinemoa (at which stage we're gelting
into the mini-cruiser realms).
In the late 1980-s Coastal Trekking and Trailer sailing of smaller
W hanum catamarans became quite popular around the world. a
few examples: Pahi 26 AM AZON built in western Canada was
trailed by Bil Gardam to Florida for extended cruising in the
Bahamas ( including a Iot of equipment on deckl'. in the same year
Ed Bears ( nomen est omen) sailed his Tane Nui FIREW OOD
Alaskan border'. on the other side 01' America Gene Perry sailed his
Tiki 2 I PAHLIULI down the coast to the Florida Keys. Gerhard
Bobretzky sailed in Europe from the Adriatic Sea to Turkey and
M ike and Jenny W ynn trailed GRATITUDE (Tiki 2 1 ) from
England to Yugoslavia and sailed down the Adriatic Sea from Krk
TIKI 21 AROUND THE W ORLD
If we talk about epic voyages then there is (lI1e which cal be
considered as the ultiluate - Rory M cDougal-s circunllavigatikln.
Tiki 2 1 COOKING FAT was built real solid but (lnly spartanly
equipped - had no engine - her motor were the wind and the
skippers energy and determination. He lnet the W harrams en rtlute
- read his story in the box - w'hat a nlan.
A year later another epic voyage started (
M cDougal set sail and headed south fronl Lands End - Elgland.
Steve Turner introduced me to Rory in 1 990, w'hen 1e was buildilg
his famous Tiki 2 l COOKING FAT. She is an interesting btpat.
basicaly a GRP boat, but in addition traditional bulkheads were
fited in (not necessary on the GRP design ) and she had a deck and
cabin style like the Tiki 36. Originaly Rory w'anted to go around
the w'orld in a l 8 foot beach cat e.g. a Tornado. . .however the Tiki
w'as a good choice. COOKIE did wel in bad weather, could sail
very fast (e.g. heart breaking surf through the Strait of Gibraltar).
could stand some payload (remember the deck chairs & windsurf'er
on her foredeck in the Tasman Sea @ F8?). As many others he
encountered very bad weather after leaving the Canary islands. '. . Catlaries F?t7r#t?lf rs l'j'tart.z basled /.75. F/ 1 1.t'/'?lJ.$', t/t '(.bcltAra:etl
Solar Ovens
The basic purpose 0f a solar box cooker is to heat things up - cook
f'ltld. purify water. and stelilize instruments - to mention a lkw.
A stlar box cooks because the interior of the box is heated by the
energy of the sun. Sunlight. both direct and reflected. enters the
solar btlx through the glass or plastic top. lt tulms to heat energy
when it is absorbed by the dark absorber plate and cooking pots.
This heat input causes the telnperature inside of the solar box
cooker to lise until the heat loss of the cooker is equal to the solar
heat gain. Tenlperatures sufficient for cooking food and pasteurizing
w'ater are easily achieved.
W hat are the basic kinds of solar cookers?
There are three basic kinds:
* Box cookers
This type of cooker has the advantage of slow', even cooking of
large quantities of food. Variations include slanting the face tow'ard
the sun and the number 01- retlectors.
* Panel cookers
This recent development was sparked by Roger Bernard in
France. In this design. various tlat panels concentrate the sun's rays
onto a pot inside a plastic bag or under a glass bowl. The advantage
()f this design is that they can be built in an hour or so for next
to nothing.
* Parabolic cookers
These are usually concave disks that tbcus the light onto the
botom of a ptlt. The advantage is that foods cook about as fast as
on a conventional stove. The disadvantage is that they are complicated
to make. they Inust be focused often to folow' the sun, and
they can cause burns and eye injury if not used correctly.
How hot do solar ovens getl?
Place an oven thermolneter in the sunny part of the oven to get a
reading similar to what the cooking pot is ' feeling' . The temperature
reached by box ctlokers and panel cookers depends plimarily
on the number and size 01- the relectors used. A single-rejlector
blx cooker usualy tops out at around l 500 C ( 3000 F) as the food
approaches being done. High temperatures. however, are not
needed for cooking. Your oven w'il cook just fine as Iong as it gets
up t() abtlut 9()0 C (2000 F) or so. Higher temperatures cook Iarger
quantities. cook l'aster. and allow ftlr cooking on marginal days',
However. many people prefer to cook at lower temperaturess since
then they can leave the food to cook while they go about their
business. W ith a single-relector box cooker. once the food is
cooked. it just stays warln and doesn't scorch. lt's good to keep in
mind that no food can go above 1000 C (2 l 20 F) anyway, until al
01' ils w'ater content has evaporated. The high temperatures you see
in cookbooks for conventional ovens are iust tbr convenience and
for special effects such as quick browning.
As a rule of thumb, you can figure that food in a single-relector
box cooker wil take about twice as long as in a conventional
oven . However. since you can't really burn your food- you don't
have to watch the cooker or stir any food as it cooks. You can just
put in a few pots with different foods and then come back later in
the day and each pot will cook to perfection.
Panel cookers cook smaller portions. usually only in a single pot.
but oten they cook slightly faster. Some people have reported the
need to stir food every once in a while when using this kind of
cooker to assure that the food heats evenly.
Cooking with a parabolic cooker is very similar to cooking on one
burner of a conventional stove. Since the concentrated sunlight
shines directly on the bottoln of a pot. the pot heats up and cooks
very quickly. The food wil burn though. So you have to stir it and
watch it carefully.
Do you have to turn the cooker to folow the sun?
Box cookers w'ith one back retlector don't need to be turned unless
you are cooking beans w'hich take up to 5 hours. Panel cookers
need to be turned more often than box cookers. since they have
side retlectors that can shade the pot. Parabolic cookers are the
most difticult to keep in focus. These need to be tulmed every l () to
30 minutes. depending on the focal Iength.
Should I take the time to build a box cooker out of 'real' materials
like plywood or glass or is cardboard good enough?
Unless you need a cooker that can stay outside even in the rain.
you'll do just fine with a cardboard cooker. Cardboard is much
easier to work with and holds heat just as wel. Some people have
used the same cardboard box cooker for over 10 years.
Does it help to paint the wals black?
Some people prefer to paint the w'als black thinking that the oven
wil get hoter. It seems. that the w'alls will get hoter. but the food
won't necessarily get hotter. W e prefer to cover the inner wals
with aluminum foil to keep the light bouncing until it hits either
the dark pot or the dark bottom tray. Since the bottom tray is in
contact with the pot. the heat the tray colects wil move into the
pot easily.
W hat type of paint should I use?
In developed countries you can buy tlat-black spray paint that says
'non-toxic when dry' on the Iabel. Otherwise. black tempra paint
works fine.
W hat kind of pots work best?
Ideally, you want to use a dark. Iight-weight. shalow pot that is
slightly larger than the food you wil cook in it. M etal pans seem
to cook best. Hardware stores in the US usualy can'y dark, speckled.
metal pans called Graniteware. Shiny aluminum pots--so common
in developing countries--can be painted black or can be
blackened in a lire. Cast iron pots w'ill work. but extra solar energy
is used to heat up the pot as well as the food, so they wil not work
in marginal conditions.

W hat is the best insulation to use?
If you wish. yotl can instllate the w'als of a box cooker with various
substances. Fiberglass or Styrofoam is usualy not recommended
since they give ofl' ill-snlelling gases as they heat up.
Natural substances such as cotton. wool, feathers. or even crumpled
newspapers w'ork well . M any people, however. leave the
walls enlply of any stufting. prefening instead to place a piece of
lbiled cardboard as a baftle inside the wall airspace. This makes a
lighter cotdker and seems to be adequate. M ost ol' the heat Ioss in a
box cooker is through the glass or plastic. not through the walls.
Can you sterilize water in a solar oven?
Yes. ln alI three types. water can be brought to a boil. A Iitleknow'n
fact- however, is that to make water sal'e to drink. it only
has to be pasteurized. not sterilized. Pasteurization takes place at
65O C ( 1 50O F) in only 2() m inutes. This treatnlent kils alI human
disease pathogens. but doesn't waste the energy needed to bring the
water to a boil. One reason that people are told to boil their water
is that therlnometers are not readily available in many places and 'W hat happens if the sun goes in front of the clouds while I'm
the boiling action serves as the lemperature indicator. cooking?
Your food will continue to cook as long as you have 2() minutes of
If you build a box cooker out of cardboard, won't it catch fire? sun an hour (using a box cooker). It is not recommended that you
No. Paper btlms at 45 1 O F and ytlur ctloker w'on't get that htlt. cook meats unatended when there is a possibility of substantial
How much of the year can you cook? you can put in any type of food in the morning. face the oven to
year depending on the weather. In areas as far north as Calada/ '
Scandanavia you can cook' w'henever it is clear except during tle
three coldest months of the year
W hat foods should I try lirst in my new Cooker?
A good lirst food to try is a smal quantity of rice, since it is fairly
easy to cook and looks very diftkrent cooked than it does raw'.
Chicken or tish is also very easy to cook. See cooking hints.
M y cooker only gets up to 2500 F. ls this hot enough to cook
when recipes cal for 3500F or even 450* F'?
A temperature of 2500 F is plenty for a1I kinds of cooking. Remember
that water cannot get hotter than 2 1 20 F ( 10()0 C). Thus if
you are cooking food that contains water. it cannot get hoter than
this either. Cookbooks cal for high temperatures to shorten the
cooking time and for browning. Food just takes longer in mtlst
solar cookers. but since the sun is shining directly on the lid of the
pot. the food browns just about as wel as in a conventional oven.
Hi Sea People,
As we wait for our building plans to arrive (Tiki 46) I
have had the good forttlne to visit with M ike ltnd M arta
' Harom y in Toronto, O ntario antl see the progress on their
Tiki 46. This was my second visit with the Harom y-s and
. their new friendship is m ost appreciated. This trip I even
donned a tyvek suit and helped them with glassing some 01the
port hull deck.
Coming up next m onth, and again in Deccmber- is a visit
to see Ann and Nev Clements on Peace IV. I tirst met Ann
and Nev in Beaufort, NC as they were heading north to
Rhode Island this past spring. The opportunity to visit and
see tinished boats and boats in progress is more motivating
than l can explain. Suftice it to say that if you have evcn the
remotest chance to visit other W harram builders, do it ! .
Recently I got an update on Rtln and Suzanne M etheny
aboard 'Tapasya' their Tiki 38. Ron built Tapasya in
Boone, NC just an hour or so away from me but l never
knew that he was building until they had launched and were
living abtlard in Carolina Beach. I visited :1 trouple ()f times
The W haram meeting planned for the weekend of Augtlst l 5 at M esqtler, southen: Britany was a
delightftll success. Four W harrams of difering sizes (plus one catamaran inspired by W harram) and
approximately forty owners, builders, potential builders (from al1 France) created an ambiance ful of
friendship.
On Saturday morning thc first arrivals could adm ire the prety scenel'y of M esquer at low-tide, but
unfortunately under a persistent drizzle.
Already present were the Tiki 21 Théo of François Juilien, based in M esquer, and the wel known
Kamiloa, Tiki 38 of the Naulet's which was the al yelow one visible from afar, in the channel. The first
anivals decided to relax with M other Nature and to wait for beter weather with a coffee. W e particularly
welcom ed M arie-l-lelene and Bertrand Fercot, in the process of building at the sam e tim e a Tiki 46 in the
finistère and a Tiki 30 in M artinique!
By m id day the drizzle left us and Kam iloa was used as a picnic area for a sm al group of visitors,
later on joined by the remainder of the group and Théo. ln the afternoon we were joined by Temoe, a
catam aran built by its ow ner obviously inspired by W hanum .
Then Leonardo, the Tiki 28 of Claude Borde arrived, fo lowed by the M élanlsia brought by the Naulet
children. W ith the weather preventing any sailing, the afternoon quickly passed in visits, com m ents and
chatterings on the 'raft' consisting of the assem bled W harram s.
Finally the day finished for the majority around plates of mussels and the lively conversations
continued until rather late...
Sunday mom ing the rendezvous' were fixed about m idday only, time for the tide to start to go up, and
for the weather to tum beautiful. The departures having been m ore num erous than the arrivals we were a
litle fewer to share a picnic on the beach. Some people had trouble finding us and 1 hope that nobody left
without having found us or the food . The afternoon everyone embarked on the boats for a tinal sail under
a light breeze during which Leonardo demonstrated her nim bleness & speed in the light airs.
Finaly, 2 fultiling days during which each one could share their experiments and their questions. lt
w as to rny know ledgc thc bcst attended V/harraln gathcring in France but can stil! get m uch better!
Arising from the various discussions w as the wish to gather the am ateurs of W harram into an
organization which could fonu part or be affiliated with the PCA (polynesian catamaran association) by
understanding the need for proxim ity and the difficulties of the English language. W e should get
information to know how the Austrians are organized (very active). Finaly that other meetings of this
type are wished for by aIl next year w ith various assum ptions: a single gathering in Rade du Brest or
seperate meets in the (english) Channel/lwa M anche and the Atlantic? A l/any proposals/suggestions are
