Marketing
Corporation
Forging ahead with
Agri-business
Development
As the Ministry of Agriculture
forges ahead with its agricultural
diversification and modernization
thrust with the objective of
positioning Guyana as a major
supplier of agricultural produce, the Guyana
Marketing Corporation continues to be one
of the key agencies providing support to this
strategy.
Guyana Marketing Corporation’s mandate of
facilitating and coordinating the development
of quality non-traditional agricultural produce
for export places it in a unique position towards
helping the agricultural sector to diversify. The
role of GMC has also evolved over the years
to facilitate these developments within the
agricultural sector. GMC no longer buys or
sells agricultural commodities but supports
and enables agribusiness development
especially in the area of export marketing of
non-traditional agricultural commodities.
The New Guyana Marketing Corporation
(GMC) as it is sometimes called, is the
marketing arm of the country’s Ministry of
Agriculture and is primarily responsible for
enabling the growth and development of the
fresh and processed products sector, as well
as furthering the expansion of agri-business
investment throughout Guyana, with emphasis
on maximizing exports.
The country’s
progression towards
a more diversified
agriculture sector
has seen the role of
GMC evolve from a
‘facilitator’ to an active
player at all levels of
the production and
marketing chain,
enabling vital linkages
between producers
and exporters, while
at the same time,
promoting the agribusiness
investment
opportunities that exist
in the non-traditional
crops sector (all crops,
with the exception of
rice and sugar).
In fulfilling its mandate of facilitating
increased exports, staff of GMC,
through its Marketing Information
Centre, is involved in disseminating
exporting procedures and advice to
stakeholders, as well as facilitating
market and supply linkages for existing
exporters.
Guyana Business 2010 | 82 Guyana Business 2010 | 83
During 2009 the agricultural
sector recorded a 32% increase in
exports of non-traditional agricultural
commodities compared to 2008.
