6.2. Basic Equipment and Supplies for the Collection of<br />

Biological Samples:<br />

� 5-10 ml Vacutainer® plastic or glass tubes for blood collection with anticoagulants<br />

(EDTA, heparin, sodium citrate);<br />

� 5-10 ml Vacutainer® plastic or glass tubes for blood collection without<br />

anticoagulants (with or without coagulation gel);<br />

� Two Vacutainer® needle adapters;<br />

� Vacutainer® needles 21G1 and 20G1½;<br />

� 2 ml cryovials;<br />

� Eppendorf-like 2 ml conic propylene micro tubes;<br />

� One tube-stand;<br />

� Sterile swabs and flasks of nutritive media, for microbiological sampling;<br />

� Sterile and non-sterile polyproline graduated screw capped 10 ml flasks;<br />

� Microscopy slides;<br />

� 19G, 20G, 21G and 22G scalps;<br />

� One bistoury and several blades;<br />

� Disposable syringes of 1, 3, 5, 10 and 20 ml;<br />

� Disposable needles 18G, 19G, 20G, 21G and 22G;<br />

� Hemoculture flasks;<br />

� Disposable latex gloves;<br />

� Nipper and scissors for the collection of a skin fragment;<br />

� Envelope for the storage of collected hair;<br />

� Plastic perfored flasks for the storage of ectoparasites.<br />

6.3. Biosecurity and Health-Protection Equipment<br />

During the collection and manipulation of biological samples, the use of disposable latex<br />

gloves, protection glasses and clothes is highly recommended. Even after the collection in<br />

the field, all samples should be treated as a biological risk until a complete immunological<br />

screening has been made to access what infectious agents the animal might have carried<br />

thought its blood, feces or other samples.
