Boilers Post Worst
Beating On Irish
In 44 Years
Sophomore Jerome Brooks’ (22) 100yard
first quarter kickoff return
changed the complexion of the game
and started the Boilermakers on
their first celebration on Irish turf in
30 years. Brooks became the first
Purdue player since Jimmy Smith
(and the fourth ever) in 1981 to
return a kick 100 yards for a score
and the 14th player overall to score
on a kickoff return.
Sophomore strong safety Bernard Pollard looks
on as Notre Dame tight end Anthony Fasano
stretches out in vain to catch a pass in the end
zone. Fasano had a career day for the Irish
catching eight passes for 155 yards.
Brooks and teammate Brandon Jones (27) sing
‘Hail Purdue’ in the southeast corner of Notre
Dame Stadium with several thousand Purdue
fans that remained for the celebration.
Junior defensive tackle Brent Grover had
another solid game in the trenches with two
blocked passes, five tackles and a fumble
recovery. Purdue limited the Irish to just 76
yards rushing, keeping the ND running game
under triple figures against Purdue for the
second-straight year.
Junior cornerback Brian Hickman gets in a jump-ball situation
with Irish receiver Jeff Samardzija. The Irish picked up a Purdue
opponent record 460 passing yards, but the Boilermaker defense
held the Irish to 16 points, the fewest by a host Notre Dame
team against Purdue since a 10-6 ND win in 1978.
Actress Susan Saint James and her
husband Dick Ebersol, president of
NBC Sports, mirror the mood of the
Notre Dame faithful from the
sidelines in the second half.
Somewhat lost in the shuffle is that the Purdue
offensive line had another standout day.
Quarterback Kyle Orton was sacked twice, but
for much of the game he had all the time
needed to carve up the Irish secondary. Also
impressive was Purdue’s ground game in the
second half, as the line helped the visitors chew
up the clock while nursing a comfortable lead.
