What They Had To Say About One Of Purdue’s
Most Memorable Wins Ever
BY DOUG GRIFFITHS
DGriffiths@GoldandBlack.com
“It took 30 years, but it was worth
the wait. I don’t think I’ve seen a
better game plan drawn up offensively,
a better game plan executed
or better play calling. It was a
phenomenal effort by so many
guys. They deserve to enjoy this
because they don’t come a long
too often. Congratulations to the
Boilermakers.”
—Former Purdue standout center and current
radio color commentator Pete Quinn
Tom Campbell
Junior center Matt Turner heads toward
the band in triumph after a prolonged
celebration with the Boilermaker fans
after the game.
“This is huge for our program. It
has been so long since we won
up here so it’s just great. The
kids played their butts off and
the outcome shows it. What a
great win for our program.”
— Defensive tackles/special teams coach Mark Hagen
“This is a great feeling. Our kids
did everything we asked them
to do and they executed everything
we taught them. What
was it? Thirteen straight times
we had lost here. We put an end
to that streak didn’t we?”
—Running backs coach David Mitchell
“What it means to me is nothing compared
to what it means to these people who have
been here so many years. Joe (Tiller), Jim
Chaney, Brock Spack and all these seniors
have come here and experienced so much
frustration. For me, this is the thrill
of a lifetime and I can only imagine
what some of our coaches and
seniors who have been here so long
are going through.
“To beat a storied program on
national TV and do it somewhat
decisively, that helps (in recruiting).
It will give us something to
talk about.”
— Wide receivers coach and recruiting
coordinator Bob DeBesse
“To me it’s another victory
that establishes
yourself as a pretty fair
football team. When you
beat Notre Dame at
Notre Dame, it means
you’ve been doing some
things right. We’re doing
a lot of stuff right, right
now, which is enabling
us to be successful with
wins and losses.
“This was a fun day. I’ll
remember this a while.”
—Offensive coordinator and tight ends
coach Jim Chaney
“When I was here as a player, we
brought great teams up here and
couldn’t win. Our Rose Bowl team
(in 2000) couldn’t do it so this is
pretty special.”
— Defensive coordinator and linebackers coach
Brock Spack
“There’s no question this is one of the
highlights of my coaching career. It’s
exciting and very rewarding. Any time
you can win a big game, and today
was a big game, it’s always exciting.
Any time you can win that big game
on the road, it’s even more exciting.”
— Offensive line coach Bill Legg
“Any time you win anywhere it’s important,
but to come up here as many times
as we’ve come up here without success,
obviously it’s a very important win for the
program and the guys on the team.
“You hope it means a lot and gives us
national attention.
“Any time you win at this level, it’s great,
no matter who it’s against. But against
Notre Dame, it’s extremely special.”
— Assistant head coach and defensive ends coach
Gary Emanuel
“I’m just ecstatic. It’s a great
thing for Purdue with all the
people here. It’s just wonderful.
“You always hoped this day would
come. That’s what you play for
this game for is to win.”
— Strength and conditioning coordinator Jim Lathrop
Tom Campbell
Coach Joe Tiller looks for protection from the potential “Gatorade Shower” from quarterback
Kyle Orton and receiver Taylor Stubblefield in the closing minutes of the game.
“I was in the middle of graduate school
(the last time Purdue won in South
Bend) and I’ve waited 12 years as an AD
to do it up here. I stood under the goal
posts when we got beat by the kick (in
2000) and I’ve seen balls do strange
things up here. Today we just played a
complete game.
“I’m happy for the kids. I’m happy for
Joe and Brock who had never had a victory
up here. It was a great game.”
