UNCHARTERED WATERS
For the second time in Coach Joe
Tiller’s eight seasons at Purdue, the
Boilermakers are ranked in the top 10
nationally.
Purdue cracked the top 10 in both
the Associated Press and ESPN/USA
Today polls Oct. 3.
The Boilermakers are ranked No. 9
by AP and No. 10 by ESPN/USA Today.
The last time Purdue was ranked
this high was heading into the
Michigan State game in November of
2000 when it was ninth.
Before Tiller arrived in West
Lafayette, the Boilermakers hadn’t been
in the top 10 since the 1980 preseason
poll when they were ninth.
By the way, the highest Purdue has
ever been ranked in the AP was No. 1 in
1968 (They were No. 1 in the coaches
poll for one week in 1965). The
Boilermakers were No. 2 in , 1943, 1965
and 1967. The highest ranking during
Coach Jim Young’s tenure at Purdue
was fifth in September of 1979.
BOILER BITS FROM
NOTRE DAME GAME
R Purdue was favored by three
points.
R The 25-point home loss to Purdue
was the third-worst defeat for the Irish in
the last 43 years. Only Florida State (37-0)
and USC (45-14) have defeated Notre
Dame by wider margins on its home field
during that span.
R Quarterback Kyle Orton’s 385yard
passing performance marked the
first time a Purdue quarterback has ever
thrown for 300 yards in Notre Dame
Stadium.
The other 300-plus performances
against the Irish are Billy Dicken (352 yards)
in Purdue’s 28-17 win in 1997, Mark
Herrmann (351) in a 31-24 loss to the Irish
in 1977 and Drew Brees (317) in Purdue’s
28-23 win in 1999.
R Orton’s four touchdown passes
is the most by a Boilermaker quarterback
against Notre Dame since
sophomore sensation Len Dawson
tossed four scoring passes in a 28-14
PRESENTS
AND FINALLY
SIMPLY AMAZING
Purdue is the only team in
Division I-A football that has
not yet committed a turnover.
Boilermaker win over No. 1 Notre
Dame 50 years ago.
R Purdue’s 97-yard touchdown
connection (Orton to Taylor
Stubblefield) was the longest ever by a
Notre Dame opponent.
R Orton tied an Irish opponent
record with four touchdown passes,
becoming the 10th player to reach that
mark and the first since USC’s Matt
Leinart last season.
R It marked the first time Purdue
posted more than 500 yards in total
offense against Notre Dame in the
Coach Joe Tiller Era.
R Purdue has now won two consecutive
games against Notre Dame for
the first time since 1984-85.
R Purdue’s 41 points are the second-most
ever for the Boilermakers in
the 76-game series (51-19 on Oct. 1,
1960, at Notre Dame Stadium).
R The Boilermakers kept possession
of the Shillelagh Trophy, which is
annually awarded to the winner of the
Purdue-Notre Dame game. The Irish
lead the battle for the trophy 30-18.
In case you didn’t know, Purdue is
two-thirds of the way to winning all
big to do about a statement
that Orton made earlier in
the week.
Orton said, “We’re
going to have to keep them
off balance, run the ball.
But I don’t see us having
that much trouble with
them.”
According to some
South Bend radio station
reports, Notre Dame coach
Tyrone Willingham used
that as bulletin board material.
The Irish players also
made it known that they
TAKES IT TO
During fall camp,
running back Jerome
Brooks told Gold &
Black Illustrated that he
wanted to become
even more of a threat
returning kickoffs.
“My job last year
was to try and get the
ball to the 50, but this
year I look forward to
getting to the house,”
he said.
Well, he took one
to the house on one of
the biggest stages there
is in one of the biggest
games of the season.
Brooks’ first-quarter
