Mackenzie’s Little Heart 

Mackenzie was born two months early and spent three weeks in the Neo-natal 

Intensive Care Unit. When her parents, Sue and Jason, finally took her 

home there was no warning that something more serious was wrong. Soon 

after she began having respiratory problems and was checked into the 

hospital after coming down with an RSV infection. After five days, and no improvement, 

Mackenzie was transferred to a hospital in Sacramento. Her doctor, who had completed his 

residency and fellowship at Stanford, immediately recognized that she had dilated cardiomyopathy, 

a condition in which a weakened heart lacks the strength to pump enough blood 

to the rest of the body. He recommended transfer to Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital, but 

the family had to wait an entire week before Mackenzie was stable enough to move. 

The initial prognosis was that medication 

could heal the heart, or at least forestall a 

transplant. The family returned home, but 

within weeks the little one had grown increasingly 

worse. The ordeal culminated with 

Mackenzie going into cardiogenic shock, as 

her tiny damaged heart could no longer supply 

enough blood to her organs. 

She was airlifted from

transplant list. 

The expected wait was eight months to a 

year. “We settled in for a long stay because she’s 

so small and also O-negative,” said Jason. The 

family packed their home into storage 

to save on rent money. Jason, who 

worked two jobs, gave one up to 

be with his daughter. 

Yet on July 7th, less than 30 

days after going on the transplant 

list, Mackenzie received 

her new heart. Though 

she has had some 

rejection issues, 

if all goes well 

with her next 

biopsy, she will 

be released to 

go home. For

as a teacher, it will be a blessing not to have to 

commute the 200+ miles to the House on a 

weekly basis. 

Even as Sue and Jason talk about going 

home, they express the importance the House 

has played in the journey. “This is truly a special 

place. It is hard to describe the comfort and 

support the home provides to families,” said Sue. 

Yet, the couple did find a way to show their 

support of the House: they joined Team RMH.

to support the House. Sue articulated their 

motivation by saying, “We want to make sure 

that future families like ours have the same 

benefits of a place to stay close to the hospital 

with familiar faces and similar stories during the 

recovery journey.”

30th Anniversary Commemorative Quilt Project 

To help celebrate the 30th 

Anniversary of Ronald McDonald 

House at Stanford, white cotton 

squares were mailed to all families 

who stayed at the House for whom we 

had addresses. Over 160 decorated 

squares were returned. With the help of several 

quilting stores and numerous volunteers, three 

quilts have been assembled and two additional 

quilts are due to be completed. 

Each quilt square was accompanied by a 

short profile about the person on it. In many 

cases, the squares and notes were touching 

memorials to children who have passed away. 

But, we also received a tremendous number of

Dear Families, 

Ronald McDonald House at Stanford celebrates 

its 30th anniversary this year by recognizing 

the heroes that stand among us everyday— 

normal people facing daunting or impossible 

circumstances with great strength and bravery. 

We find our heroes in many forms: the munchkins 

battling life-threatening illnesses, the families supporting 

one another, the volunteers giving their time, and the 

donors funding the programs. But there’s another group, 

so integral to our mission, yet they often go 

unnoticed: the doctors, nurses and social 

workers at Lucile Packard Children’s 

Hospital. 

The administration and staff of the 

hospital played a key role in founding 

Ronald McDonald House at Stanford in 

1979, and they have been an important 

part of its development ever since. One of

We count our blessings, and this house is one 

of them. We want to thank all of the sponsors, 

volunteers and people who donated food. Especially 

we want to thank the staff in this house for 

their kindness and helpfulness. This house has 

given us the opportunity to have a good night 

sleep, relaxation after a bad day, and the great 

opportunity to meet parents that are going 

through the same thing and even worse, which has 

helped us be grateful for what we have. Finally we 

want to thank you for all the great programs that

mission was to coordinate with the social services provided 

by the hospital. Today, our Accommodations office works 

closely with the social workers to place the families in 

housing, ensuring that families’ needs and individual 

situations are addressed. 

The hospital has also largely impacted the growth of 

the House both with its physical expansion and also with 

its scientific achievements. As the doctors develop new 

medicine and advanced techniques, they are able to treat 

more children. Because the children are so sick, treatment 

takes much longer, leading to longer stays. 

The House provides supportive programs that 

complement the medical services provided by the 

hospital. Working together with our colleagues at 

LPCH, we offer families the best possible means 

to care for their sick child. 

Dear Ronald McDonald House staff, 

I traveled to Palo Alto alone to bring 

my youngest daughter to LPCH for a 

procedure and I felt so grateful for a 

close, safe place to stay. The House is 

truly an amazing resource for families 

traveling from afar. I really appreciated 

the complimentary dinner…and the 

friendliness of the staff. Bless you!

On Saturday, September 26th, Ronald McDonald House at Stanford celebrated its 30th anniversary 

with a Family Reunion party. 

The approximately 300 guests were entertained by jugglers, a magician, face painters, a petting 

zoo, and the Furry Friends group. Snow cones, hot dogs, popcorn and ice cream helped complete 

the carnival atmosphere. On display were four of the quilts created to commemorate the milestone. 

The party culminated with a competition in which four local bakers displayed enormous and uniquely decorated 

cakes they had created for the occasion. Celebrity judges Kristi Yamaguchi, Charlie Ayers and Kate Paye declared 

the winner to be Not Just Cheesecakes, while the People’s Choice Award went to Jen’s Cakes.

As the children have grown, so has 

the House. Remember when… 

The House opened in 1979 with 

13 rooms? When it expanded to 

24 rooms in 1991? Who knew then that there 

would eventually be room enough for 47 

families to stay? Pictured above is the front of 

Ronald McDonald House at Stanford in 1991, 

with an overlay of the building as it is today. In 

addition to 23 more rooms, the amenities now 

include a Fitness Center, a Children’s Activity 

Center, a larger Teen Room and an enhanced 

CLIK Room. 

Remember those old computers from 

the 90’s? With floppy drives and all-in-one 

computer/monitor units? 

Those days are long gone. 

The House now features nine 

state-of-the-art computers with 

flat screen monitors, photo quality scanner/ 

printers, a larger software library—all in a more 

spacious location. The program hours have 

also been extended so the children can do their 

schoolwork or play games, while 

parents keep up with work. 

More families in the House 

has required more cooking and 

dining space. Back in the day 

there were two small dining 

rooms, equipped with 3 or 4 

tables. Now each family has a 

private mini-fridge and pantry 

in addition to use of the 1250 square foot 

communal kitchen and 14-table dining 

room. Larger 

communal spaces mean more 

opportunities for families to share their 

stories and experiences. 

The House has evolved into more than 

just a place to stay. It now offers amenities 

and programs designed to create a supportive 

environment for the families staying here. For 

that there will always 

be a need, so even after 

30 years there’s still 

room to grow.

Reception 

The 2009 Children’s Circle Reception celebrated 30 years of 

heroes who have touched Ronald McDonald House at Stanford. 

Over 100 guests enjoyed a beautiful and delicious brunch on 

the back lawn at the House, thanks to event sponsors Left Bank, 

Vino Locale, Starbucks and Mills the Florist. 

Master of Ceremonies Liz Kniss, the Current President of the Board of 

Supervisors for Santa Clara County’s 5th District, helped present awards 

which honored the “everyday” heroes who have taken what they love to do 

and found a way for it to bring real value to the families. Featured speaker 

and angel investor Ron Conway echoed that sentiment by discussing 

extraordinary solutions for common problems through modern technology. 

Among those honored were Ronald McDonald House Charities of the 

Bay Area, Art and Lisa Zafiropoulo of Ultratech, Kay Sims, Derrick Diaz, 

Dave Schaub, and the George Family—who began their relationship with 

the House decades ago as guests.

in planning a fabulous reception!

In our last newsletter, we spotlighted Dave Schaub, owner of the 

nearby Schaub’s Meat, Fish & Poultry market. Dave was soon 

to embark on his journey through 49 continental states in only 9 

days… all in an effort to raise money to support the House and our 

families. Dave has since completed his “49-in-9” adventure, and 

financial contributions continue to come in! As of mid-October, over 

400 individuals, organizations and businesses have generously 

donated money in support of the House. 

Regretfully, due to space limitations, we are unable to list
