Protected by the high dykes doggedly
constructed to stem the tides and colonise
the sea, the Dutch countryside stretches far
into the horizon, with windmills providing
the only relief in the landscape. In springtime,
these landscapes that are bordered only
by the horizon and home to colourful
swathes of yellow and red tulips clearly
inspired the great Dutch masters whose
works are displayed today on the walls of
Amsterdam

water in the North where the large lakes
