Threats – Bombs/Chemical/Biological Bomb Threats: Bomb threats are usually received by telephone, but may be received by note or letter. Most bomb threats are made by callers who want to create an atmosphere of general anxiety and panic, but all such calls must be taken seriously and handled as though an explosive is in the building. Keep a bomb threat card (form IS022) under your phone. If you receive a bomb threat, follow these steps: • Ask as many questions from the bomb threat card as you can. • If the caller hesitates, go to the next question. • Let the caller talk as much as possible. • Take notes on everything (noises, voice, etc.). • Tell the caller that the building is occupied and that many innocent lives are endangered by the threat. Administrative/Operational buildings: 1. Call Corporate Security at 1-800-937-4928. Corporate Security will provide an assessment of the threat using the information you provide about the threat and other circumstances unique to your building. 2. Notify law enforcement (verify that 9-1-1 is the correct number to use.) Tell them of the threat and that you have notified Corporate Security for threat assessment. Remain on the line until instructed to get off. 3. Contact Corporate Properties or building management if a leased space. 4. Prepare for other emergency action (e.g., if building emergency team is assigned, notify members, etc.). 5. Follow instructions of emergency personnel or Corporate Security. Stores(e.g. Banking, Mortgage or Financial) 1. Notify law enforcement at (usually 9-1-1). 2. Then notify Corporate Security, at 1-800-937-4928, and store management, if Financial call 1-877-273-0103. 3. If you are in a branch that shares space with another tenant, notify building management as well. 4. For details refer to the “Retail Security Manual”. Suspicious Object: 1. DON’T TOUCH, KEEP EVERYONE AWAY. 2. Report finding to law enforcement and Corporate Security. 3. Inform Corporate Properties or building management. Explosion: 1. Follow evacuation procedures. 2. Call law enforcement (usually 9-1-1). 3. Call Corporate Security at 1-800-937-4928. Chemical/Biological Threats: Threats of chemical or biological agents are rare. Nonetheless, if you have such a threat: 1. If threat is phoned, ask caller for details (use bomb threat form). Once caller hangs up and for all written threats, go to step 2. 2. DO NOT EVACUATE. 3. Isolate threatened area and people. 4. Contact Emergency Medical Services (usually 9-1-1). 5. Call Corporate Security at 1-800-937-4928. 6. Contact the National Response Center at 800-424-8802 for immediate instruction and hazardous risk assessment. 7. Inform building management. Shut down HVAC system (prevent possible spread). 8. Secure the building. Emergency medical personnel will probably respond in full biological contamination gear (space suits) and will treat you and the area as if it has been contaminated. Do not panic. This is standard for their protection and yours. Contamination and treatment procedures have successfully been developed, but you must remain on site and cooperate for them to be effective. 1. Remain as calm as possible. 2. Think—keep caller on the line. 3. Do not upset caller.
