My wife and I got into a conversation about life
out all my beer. Sometimes it’s tough being married
SENIOR HEALTH
Improper Use of Medication
Taking a prescription medication as directed
by a doctor is generally safe and effective.
Lately, though, there has been a rise in the
number of older adults taking their medicines
improperly, including for non-medical reasons
and suffering the consequences with trips to
the emergency room.
Some people accidentally take medicines
incorrectly, or they may forget to take their
medicines, take it too often, or take the wrong
amount. Another problem is having more
than one doctor prescribing medication, but
no one doctor monitoring them.
It is important that you keep careful check
on when you take your medicines, use a pill
box,or a daily calendar to keep track. Also,
don’t hesitate to discuss your medications
with your doctor if you have any doubts, and
whatever you do....don’t increase dosage
without a doctor’s recommendation.
low, and we are asking that you donate
craft items to these dedicated ladies and
gentlemen who give so generously of their
time to help make the Senior Center a more
pleasant place for all of us. Drop off items at
the front desk.
BUS SERVICE
Did you know that the Senior Center operates
four buses every day Monday through
Friday. We are fortunate to partner with
Smart and provide community transit for
seniors or residents with disabilities that
reside in Shelby or Utica and are members
of the Senior Center. For medical appointments
we travel north to 27 mile, south to
18 mile, east to Romeo Plank and west to
Livernois. For shopping we stay within
Shelby and Utica. Bus tickets are $.50
each way. Contact the Senior Center anytime,
Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m.
to 5:00 p.m. Please note that we need two
weeks advance notice for medical appointments
and one week advance notice for
personal appointments.
TRANSPORTATION IS AVAILABLE FOR
EVENING EVENTS IF THERE IS ENOUGH
INTEREST. CALL US OR STOP BY THE
Seniors will soon pick up Medicare information
at their local pharmacy regarding bene ts
available to them under the Affordable Care
Act. A study by HHS Secretary, Kathleen
Sebelius was released showing that an
increasing number of senior citizens are
using the pharmacy clinics popping up
across the country. Drug stores providing
these services include CVS, Walgreens,
Walmart and Sam’s Club. They will be
providing a range of Medicare materials on
newly available preventive services, as well
as savings on prescription drug spending
in the donut hole coverage gap. If your
pharmacy hasn’t begun distribution of these
materials, please ask them when it will become
available. To learn more about Medicare,
visit www.medicare.gov or call 1-800-
