Golf anyone?? Tennis
may be tough for me. There I was,
playing Friday Night Doubles with
Maggie Hanes, when I missed the
game point shot. One ambulance
ride, nine hours and 30+ stitches
later I was back home. Thanks
to everyone for all the calls and
emails. I’m doing well, just not so
good looking.
For all you golfers, the club has lost almost 400
of the green golf towels. That is almost $1,000 in cost.
I admit I was guilty as well, I am sure they are in golf
bags or in the back of cars (that’s where mine was!) Golf
Amnesty Program: Please return any green golf towels
you do have, no questions asked. And no, you don’t have
to wash or iron them.
Friendly Fridays on the Porch has been a major
success with its Kids Club activities, buffet dining and
music under the pavilion. If you have missed it, come out
and join us. We are averaging about 225 members per
night. The more the merrier! We
also have hired a new Activities
Director, Leea Murphy to help
organize CHCC’s kids programs.
She is very energetic, friendly
and will be a great fit to our
CHCC family.
The 8th Annual Swim
for Smiles was a major success,
and although parking is always a challenge we need to
remember 380 of “our kids” participated with the proceeds
from this event going to the UNC children’s Hospital.
While there are winners for each age group, the big
winner is the hospital.
To date, Swim for Smiles
has raised more that
$200,000 for the North
Carolina Children’s
Hospital.
The Parent/Child
Fishing Tournament
started cold and damp,
The Club is now offering ACH processing to
pay your monthly bill. Make paying your bill
as simple as 1-2-3. Simply bring a canceled
check to the office and we will do the rest.
Call the office at (919) 967-8201 for more
details.
President’s Message
but things quickly heated up as soon as the fish began
biting. The big
winner of the day
was Neil Harrell’s 3
year old grandson,
Brooks. His first
fish was a scary 5-12
pound catfish (Dad,
Jonathan helped a
little) His second
whopper nearly
pulled him into the
water. A 3 pound
bass struck while he
was walking along the edge. Brooks had the most fun
playing with all of the worms. Oh yeah, and Neil, the
Granddad, didn’t catch anything at all.
If you play golf you know the golf course is in
great condition. Craig and his crew are addressing long
term problems and even doing some nice to-do projects
to improve aesthetics. Last Week they had a state
agronomist in to test soil conditions. Things are good
and I expect them to get better. One way you can help is
if you drive a cart, use the divot mixture and fill in your
divots and one extra. The same thing goes for everyone
with regard to ball marks; fix your mark, plus one more.
Congratulations to Jeff Jamison for shooting a 63,
nine birdies and no bogies, during the recent Member-
Member Tournament.
The Membership Drive continues to bring in new
members, 30 to date, against our annual goal of 60. Keep
it up! New members are the key to our financial health.
I’m sometimes asked: why 60 new members The answer
is 60 new members this year will enable us to meet all our
operating, mortgage and capital investment needs.
Lastly, if you haven’t met our new Chef Jimmy
Reales, introduce yourself and dine on one of his
specialties. Jimmy was the Chef at the Carolina Inn
Crossroads Restaurant. His cooking earned him two trips
to the prestigious James Beared House in New York City.
Jimmy and wife Leigh have two children - son, Conner
and daughter Caroline. I expect we will soon become a
destination dining experience.
on the course. All children must be accompanied
by a parent or adult.
One of the areas your house committee, and the The goal is to utilize the Porch more as a family
It is just a bit brown-gray and harsh, so to make it make space. Sometimes, what you envision isn’t what happens,
it a more inviting space, but I hope you’ll find the accented living room look of
we’re going to add some Isaac’s Porch attractive and tempting to use. Give us
furniture and a rug. In a few months to finish the project and see what you
I can’t conclude this update without
thanking Bren Eskridge, one of my
are her concept. She picked out the
the clubhouse and moved
them to Isaac’s Porch, where they now sit flanking the
fireplace. Mix in some lamps and a sideboard or two and
you have the beginnings of a new Family Grill Room
on Isaac’s Porch.
I say the beginnings because the chairs we moved are
temporary. We plan to purchase new chairs, depending
on the availability of funds, plus four new bar stools to
fill the empty space at the bar where there are currently
no stools at all. Throw in some colorful place mats for
the tables and another few flourishes here and there and
we will have a warmer, more welcoming Isaac’s Porch.
At least that is our intention.
committee. And, of course, we
wouldn’t be doing this without
forward-leaning support from the
board, which authorized spending
the money.
In closing, if you see a new
guy dressed in white roaming the clubhouse, keeping
a critical eye on the food, that’s our new chef, Jimmy
Reale. He joined us May 16. Make him feel welcome and
in next month’s newsletter I’ll tell you a little bit about
what he has planned for us.
children are the future of the club. If we can provide
them an environment in which to grow, develop and
succeed in then we have accomplished our goal.” Plans
are to create programs that promote growth through
sports such as golf and tennis as well as providing an
atmosphere to play with their friends and be free. This
Superintendent’s Message
The commitment to the golf
course along with good weather has
proven to have paid off so far. The
greens are healthier above ground
(and especially below ground)
than the last few years. We feel
really good about going into this
summer.
A third “wave” of light
sodding has been completed. This
time sod was placed on certain
areas of the collars that were
damaged over the winter. A fourth
Women’s Golf Association
There was lots of good golf in
May but the real WGA highlight
was our Queen Bee event held on
May 1st and 8th. Organizers Nell
Laton and Pat Kaiser hosted this
two day tournament where each
player plays 18 holes on each of two
days and tallies the better score for
each hole. Wow -- the ultimate
do-over! Last year’s winner Jackie
Heywood handed over the coveted
Queen Bee visor to Mary Guckes
who posted an outstanding net
59! Congratulations Mary and our
thanks to Nell and Pat for turning
14
out such a great event.
In other WGA news,
Membership Chair Linda Johnston
has been busy and as a result we are
welcoming two new members, Jane
Lamm and Diane Staton. And Lin
Wright our Triangle Interclub Play
(TIP) Chair reports that thanks to
Diane Koenigshofer’s stunning 74
CHCC is now in second place TIP
standings. Nice going to Diane
and her teammates!
And to close -- lots of
excitement as we approach the
final countdown for the club’s 6th
“wave” is on the way with some areas in
the rough that take away from the overall
appearance of the course. We are only
sodding as much as we can take care of
without risking losing any.
We are heading into the “mow and
blow” mode for the summer. This is when
small projects start to slow as we keep up
with day to day conditions. We have many
ambitious plans for projects this fall and
on into the winter.
Thank You,
Craig S. Thompson, CGCS
Annual Carolina Classic, June 7-8.
Suzanne Kozel and her team are
putting on the finishing touches for
this Western-themed event with
guests coming from all over the US.
Pre-game clinics and an “Evening
at the Ponderosa” cocktail party
launch this fabulous tournament
with the winning cowgirls being
recognized at a buffet luncheon
afterwards.
That’s all from the WGA,
Laura Ellgen, President
Senior Men’s Golf Association
The SMGA held two of its major events in May
with the Member-Member on May 9 and 11 followed
by the Member-Guest on May 17 and 18. The golf
gods were kind with great weather and prime course
conditions for both outings.
In the Member-Member, there were two highly
contested flights: Flight One – Low Gross -Larry
Cheek and Ramsey Green - Low Net -Ted Oldenberg
and Harvey Ainbinder. Flight Two- Low Gross- Dan
White and Mark Tolton. Low Net- Terry Flynn and
Benson Pilloff
The Third Annual Member Guest was a great
success with a tournament on Friday followed by a
wonderful meal in the Rosemary Room prepared by
Nifty Niners Golf Association
It’s trite but fun to say that our golf season is now in full
swing. Our playdays in June, have an adjustment—
• June 13, Wednesday, is the day we play due to the
men’s member-guest
• June 7 and the last two Thursdays are as usual.
Governor’s Club is hosting Tri-Nine on
Tuesday, June 19th. Remember that the sign-up
deadline is June 6! Call our Pro Shop, Christina, or
Karen, or use our notebook to sign up.
There’s major Social News as well. The
regular Nifty Niner First Friday Friendly Gathering
at the club is suspended until September. The Board
thought that the club’s delightful golf and social
mixer 9, Wine & Dine, which will be each fourth
Friday afternoon, would be a good replacement during
the summer. Sign up in the pro shop for golf at 5:00
on June 22—the shop will do the pairings—and with
Lana for dinner. Even if you’re not playing golf, come
for the Wine/Dine part, just call Lana. And please do
continue to enjoy every Friday evening at the club—
Chef Jimmy’s luscious buffet/cookout and the music
outside are not to be missed.
At our semi-annual meeting, your Board of
Directors also decided to have a summer party. It will
our new Chef Jimmy Reale. We got a first impression
of the good things in store for the club now that he is
on board. The winners of Flight One were Ed Kaiser
and David Koepnik. In Flight Two there was a tie
for first with Joe Garfunkel and Walter Bach sharing
with John McGee and Malcolm MacDonald.
Be sure to sign up for the start of the President’s
Match Play Tournament on Wednesday June 6th.
There will be a full Carolina breakfast proceeding the
round and open to all members whether playing or
not.
John McGee
President
be at a member’s home, on Saturday evening, July 21,
