Maryland National <strong>Final</strong>ists<br />

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, FL.—The Mid-Atlantic team from Montgomery<br />

County, MD, finished second after falling to Southern<br />

(Louisiana) 2-1 at the 9.0 Chrysler <strong>USTA</strong> National Eastern Senior<br />

Mixed Doubles Championships held at Sanlando Park.<br />

Captain Gary Lyst led the Mid-Atlantic champs by going undefeated<br />

with a 2-0 record.<br />

Maryland beat Florida and Southern (Mississippi) 2-1 before falling to<br />

Louisiana’s Southern in a battle of unbeatens.<br />

Other players are Francis Kreysa, Debbie Cafferty, David Wendt, Sol<br />

Lopez, Susan Lyst, John Raaf, Patricia Stewart, Robert Finney, John<br />

Reinhard, Suzanne Parrott, Heidi Clemmer, and Bill Rublee.<br />

MD 3.5 Women Finish 3rd<br />

National Standouts: (L-R) Jennefer Garcia, Terry Martin,<br />

Marmar Naji, Denise Ferrenz, Captain Mark Wallendjack,<br />

Emma Lee, Elizabeth Lynch, Terry Childs, Terri Fepelstein<br />

and Toshiko Hino.<br />

TUCSON, AZ—Led by Jennefer Garcia, who went<br />

undefeated at districts, sectionals, and nationals, the<br />

Bethesda women’s team finished third at the Chrysler<br />

3.5 Senior <strong>USTA</strong> League National Championships.<br />

The Mid-Atlantic champs lost a 2-1 match to the Midwest,<br />

the eventual runners-up, in the semifinals 2-1.<br />

Before that, it went unbeaten in its flight by beating<br />

Florida 3-0, and the Missouri Valley and Pacific Northwest<br />

2-1.<br />

Other players are Lauren Greenberger, Jan Brito, Fiona<br />

Carson, Susan Neaman, Pam Barkley, Julie White, and<br />

Jill Lucas.<br />

Virginia 4.0 Men 4th<br />

TUCSON, AZ—The Virginia<br />

Beach men’s team, the <strong>USTA</strong><br />

Mid-Atlantic champs, finished<br />

fourth at the Chrysler<br />

4.0 <strong>USTA</strong> Senior League<br />

National Championships held<br />

at the Randolph Tennis Center.<br />

Virginia dropped a 2-1 decision<br />

to Southern, the eventual<br />

runner-up, in the semifinals.<br />

They dropped a 2-1 nailbiter<br />

to Pacific Northwest in<br />

the third-place match.<br />

The Mid-Atlantic team<br />

went unbeaten in its flight by<br />

topping Southern Cal 2-1,<br />

Intermountain 3-0, Hawaii 2-<br />

1, and the Caribbean 3-0.<br />

Other team members are<br />

Toby Leffel and Phil Meadows.<br />

Virginia Beach 2nd<br />

3.5 Senior National <strong>Final</strong>ists: (L-R) Chuck Phillips, John<br />

Demosthenes, James Laster, Captain Michael Aschkenas,<br />

Robert Gompers, Ed Flanders, and Glenwood Morris.<br />

The Virginia Beach men’s team, representing the <strong>USTA</strong><br />

Mid-Atlantic Section, finished second at the Chrysler 3.5<br />

Senior <strong>USTA</strong> League National Championships.<br />

Virginia’s John Demosthenes and Ed Flanders won in a<br />

third-set tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles for the team’s only<br />

victory against champion Northern California.<br />

Earlier in the day, the Mid-Atlantic team defeated<br />

Southwest 3-0 in the semifinals.<br />

Despite falling to New England 2-1, the Mid-Atlantic<br />

champs won its flight after both teams had identical 2-1<br />

records.<br />

Virginia whipped Florida 3-0 and Pacific Northwest 3-<br />

0.<br />

John Demosthenes and Ed Flanders went unbeaten in<br />

all five of their matches.<br />
