Be safe and sound<br />
exploring the natural world is a fantastic way to learn about nature,<br />
however it is important to take some precauti<strong>on</strong>s to ensure nobody<br />
gets hurt. remind your group of the following guidelines described<br />
in Eco-fun: great projects , experiments and games for a greener<br />
Earth by david suzuki and kathy Vanderlinden.<br />
protect yourself<br />
>> be careful when using sharp objects and electrical appliances. young<br />
children should seek the help of an adult.<br />
>> d<strong>on</strong>’t look directly at the sun.<br />
>> d<strong>on</strong>’t taste things you find unless you are certain they are not<br />
pois<strong>on</strong>ous.<br />
>> wear gardening or rubber gloves when handling soil.<br />
>> wash your hands after finishing an activity.<br />
>> in some activities, you have the opti<strong>on</strong> of uploading pictures or<br />
videos to the internet <strong>on</strong> websites such as youTube. always make<br />
sure you have the permissi<strong>on</strong> of every<strong>on</strong>e in the pictures or video,<br />
and their parents, before you post anything <strong>on</strong>line.<br />

>> Treat nature with respect.<br />
>> be careful with the animals you work with; wear protecti<strong>on</strong> if necessary.<br />
be gentle. make sure they have appropriate food, water and air. when<br />
you’re d<strong>on</strong>e, put them back where you found them.<br />
>> never pick protected species. before collecting plants or picking<br />
flowers, get permissi<strong>on</strong>. <strong>on</strong>ly take what you need and make sure you<br />
leave at least <strong>on</strong>e third of anything you find in the wild. if possible it<br />
is best to not pick anything and to leave everything as you found it.<br />
>> when you do activities, especially the outdoor <strong>on</strong>es, make sure you<br />
leave no trace.<br />
>> as much as possible, recycle or reuse the materials used in the<br />
activities.<br />
