Stanton Community Center (SCC)<br />
The following programs are <strong>of</strong>fered at the Stanton Community Center, 92 W. Washington Street, unless otherwise indicated, programs are<br />
free unless otherwise indicated. Activities are on-going, but please call the Stanton Recreation Office at 410.263.7966 to confirm days and<br />

After School Homework Club<br />
Designed to serve elementary, middle and<br />
high school students, this program helps to<br />
strengthen academic skills. Students receive<br />
tutoring in all core<br />
subjects, homework<br />
assistance, and<br />
help with school<br />
projects. They also<br />
have access to online<br />
computers and<br />
snacks are served.<br />

Multi-Purpose Room<br />
Friday Night Splash!<br />
Learn how to swim and have fun at the pool!<br />
Learn valuable life-saving skills, build selfconfidence<br />
and become safety-conscious.<br />
Children who show dedication through regular<br />
attendance will be encouraged to apply for<br />
a Truxtun Park Swim Team scholarship.<br />
Transportation is provided. Cost: $10.<br />

Arundel Olympic Swim Center<br />
Girls are Great at Science<br />
(GAGAS) The GAGAS Club is a<br />
volunteer-based program designed to expose<br />
elementary school girls to the world <strong>of</strong> science<br />
and engineering in a fun, hands-on manner<br />
with hopes that they will become more<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>icient in math and science, and one day<br />
pursue a career in the science, engineering or<br />
technical field. Must be pre-registered.<br />

Tennis This program is designed for<br />
low-moderate to moderate players. Practices<br />
will be coached by USTA Certified Instructor<br />
John Garrett. John is a highly qualified tennis<br />
instructor whose vast tennis experience and<br />
expert knowledge is contagious!<br />

Lexie’s Cup Cake Baking Class<br />
Children will learn how to bake cup cakes from<br />
scratch. Each child will have a<br />
specific job in the commercial<br />
kitchen, for example, stirring<br />
the butter, beating the eggs,<br />
filling the cup cake holders<br />
with batter and clean-up<br />
responsibilities. The goal<br />
<strong>of</strong> the program is to create an enjoyable<br />
experience that they can look forward to. Each<br />
child receives cup cakes at the end <strong>of</strong> class.<br />

The Reading &<br />
Math <strong>Program</strong><br />
This program is a<br />
component <strong>of</strong> the After<br />
School Homework Club.<br />
This program is designed to<br />
help below grade level and<br />
at grade level elementary<br />
and middle school students<br />
strengthen their reading<br />
and math skills. Students<br />
receive expert instruction<br />
from a certified school<br />
teacher using tools such as<br />
the smart board, computer<br />
s<strong>of</strong>tware and interactive Web<br />
sites are used. All students<br />
seeking to participate in this<br />
program must be registered,<br />
although there is no charge.<br />

The Summit School Literacy<br />
Counts Tutorial <strong>Program</strong><br />
This one-on-one tutoring program is a program<br />
designed for 1 st - 3 rd graders who are below<br />
grade level readers. They receive expert tutoring<br />
from Master Degreed certified teachers who are<br />
specifically trained to tutor students with reading<br />
deficiencies. Only 3 students per session.<br />

Start The Adventure In Reading<br />
(STAIR) In partnership with <strong>Annapolis</strong><br />
Elementary School, and First Presbyterian<br />
Church, <strong>Annapolis</strong> Elementary School 2 nd grade<br />
students will have additional help with oneon-one<br />
tutoring. This program is designed to<br />
enhance the reading skills <strong>of</strong> students who are<br />
having difficulty reading at the appropriate level.<br />
Snacks will be provided.<br />

Zastro Simms Youth Basketball<br />
Leagues (ZSBYL) A competitive and<br />
non-competitive program based on skill and<br />
age. All programs take place in the Stanton<br />

Adult Basic Computer Class<br />
The SCC hosts an Adult Basic Computer<br />
class, which is provided by the Opportunities<br />
Industrialization Center (OIC), every<br />
Monday and Wednesday evening from 6<br />
to 9 pm. This is a continuous class held<br />
every 12 weeks in the SCC computer lab.<br />

Adult Basic Skills Class<br />
Anne Arundel Community College (AACC)<br />
and the SCC partner together to <strong>of</strong>fer ABS<br />
classes which can lead towards a general<br />
education degree (GED). ABS classes are<br />
designed for individuals who do not have a<br />
high school diploma and need to review and<br />
improve basic reading, math and language<br />
skills. Participants may be referred to the<br />
GED test prep class once their skills have<br />
been improved. The classes are held at<br />
the SCC in the computer lab. To register,<br />
please call AACC at 410.777.1823 to make<br />
an appointment for an assessment session<br />
before enrolling in the class. For more<br />

Adult CPR Training Class<br />
The American Red Cross hosts CPR<br />
Training Classes on Saturdays at SCC from<br />
9 am - 12 pm. Those interested, should call<br />
