where three Slender-billeds were found wintering<br />

. and Saudi Arabia where one was discovered<br />

near the Yemen border on 19 January<br />

. The wintering Terek Sandpiper Xenus<br />

crnereus remained on the Blyth Estuary . Northumberland,<br />

Britain, until at least 28 April .<br />

Most interestingly. no less than nine firstwinter<br />

Herring Gulls Larus argentatus showing<br />

the characlers of the American<br />

subspecies L a smithsonianus were ident -<br />

fied in Ireland in February and March (for<br />

more intormation on these birds and their<br />

identification, see <strong>Birding</strong> World 3 : 96-100 .<br />

<strong>1990</strong>) . The only previous WP record of this<br />

subspecies was in November 1937 when a<br />

Canadian-ringed first-winter was recovered<br />

480 km off Si Following last year's first<br />

Thayer's Gulls L thayeri for the WP in Ireland<br />

and Sweden (cf <strong>Dutch</strong> <strong>Birding</strong> 11 : 99 .<br />

1989) . another first-winter was found in Ireland<br />

(County Cork) from 21 February to 4<br />

March (for more information, see <strong>Birding</strong><br />

World 3 : 91-93, <strong>1990</strong>) . A very confiding firstwinter<br />

Ivory Gull Pagophila eburnea attracted<br />

many birders to Stellendam . Zu dhalland,<br />

during 9-19 February . being only the second<br />

record of this arctic species tor th= Netherlands<br />

. For the sixth winter in succession . an<br />

Oriental Turtle Dove Streptopefia orientaks<br />

remained at Mórbylanga . Oland . Sweden . In<br />

February-April, there was a rema,kable influx<br />

of Greai Spotted Cuckaos Clamator<br />

glandarius in 8rítain, with individuals in<br />

Cheshire (18 March), Devon t2c. February<br />

and 20-29 March), Kent f25 March) and<br />

Sussex {4-30 April} . A Scops Owl G7usscops<br />

found on a boat 3 km south of Portland .<br />

Dorset, Britain, on 20 March was transterred<br />

to Portland Bird Observatory, where it was<br />

released the same evening . li flew off . never<br />

to be seen again . The first Snovey Owl Nyctea<br />

scandiaca for the Netherlands since the<br />

winter of 1980181 was photographed and<br />

seen by only a few birders a1 Lage Zwaluwe .<br />
