based on the 1796 light cavalry pattern, with regulation<br />

blade, gilt-brass hilt cast in low relief, including cross-piece<br />

with button terminals, a pair of ivory grip-scales retained by<br />

pairs of foliate washers on each side, in its regulation silverplated<br />

steel scabbard decorated over its full surface with<br />

scrolling flowers and foliage<br />

JOHNSTON, NO.8 NEWCASTLE STREET, STRAND, EARLY<br />

19TH CENTURY<br />

with broad kilig blade formed with a double-edged point,<br />

engraved gilt-brass hilt of characteristic form including a<br />

pair of quillons with bud-shaped terminals, horn gripscales,<br />

in its original fishskin-covered wooden scabbard<br />

(small losses) with engraved gilt-brass mounts including<br />

locket with the maker's details, chape decorated with<br />

neoclassical ornament on the front, laurel fronds, further<br />

foliage and a sword of justice on the reverse and four large<br />

loops for suspension<br />

Joshua Johnston and his son, of the same name, are<br />

recorded at Newcastle Street circa 1790-1839. See L.<br />

Southwick 2001, pp.152-3. It is likely that the blade of this<br />

sword came from the arsenal in Cairo, in the early 19th<br />

Century.<br />
