A RARE NORTH INDIAN SWORD, EARLY 19TH CENTURY<br />

with curved single-edged blade of watered steel (small<br />

patches of very light pitting), steel hilt comprising a pair of<br />

short bulbous quillons chiselled with expanded<br />

flowerheads on the terminals, recurved knuckle-guard, an<br />

additional outer-guard formed of a small basal guard<br />

pierced with stylised birds, two bars converging at the top<br />

and recurved en suite with the pommel, a pair of<br />

attenuated langets, fluted spherical pommel, applied over<br />

its full surface with gold koftgari scrolls and foliage on a<br />

russet ground, and solid grip decorated en suite, in its<br />

velvet-covered wooden scabbard with pierced copper<br />

chape<br />
