A 35 BORE GERMAN PERCUSSION SPORTING RIFLE<br />
WITH BARREL BY JAMES 1 WILKINSON, LONDON, CIRCA<br />
1840<br />
with signed browned twist heavy octagonal barrel of circa<br />
1810, rifled with five grooves, stamped with the<br />
barrelsmith's mark beneath, fitted with barleycorn fore-sight<br />
and folding ladder back-sight, case-hardened breech,<br />
engraved case-hardened breech tang decorated with<br />
foliage inhabited by a serpent, detented lock engraved with<br />
foliage around the border and a hound in pursuit of a stag,<br />
retained by a blued quick-release thumb-screw, and fitted<br />
with engraved case-hardened hammer en suite with the<br />
tang, double set trigger, highly figured walnut full stock cut<br />
with a shaped panel of chequering at the fore-end and the<br />
grip, carved raised cheek-piece (bruising and scratches, the<br />
fore-end with one small crack), finely engraved steel<br />
mounts comprising trigger-guard shaped for the fingers<br />
and incorporating an adjustable front guard, spurred buttplate<br />
decorated with a stag, three moulded ramrod-pipes,<br />
and two sling swivels, silver scrolling side-plate inset with a<br />
vacant gold escutcheon beneath, oval escutcheon, silver<br />
barrel bolt escutcheons, horn fore-end cap (one small<br />
crack), and brass-tipped steel ramrod, perhaps the original<br />

FREUND IN HEIDELBERG, CIRCA 1860<br />
with heavy octagonal etched twist barrel rifled with seven<br />
narrow grooves, inscribed ‘Canon Damassé’ and signed in<br />
gold over the breech (sights removed), the breech<br />
incorporating a percussion bolster finely chiselled as a<br />
scaly monster, engraved breech tang with provision for two<br />
standing back-sights behind, border and scroll-engraved<br />
lock fitted with pierced hammer decorated en suite, double<br />
set trigger, highly figured walnut full stock carved with bold<br />
chequering over the fore-end and the grip, carved raised<br />
cheek-piece, carved horn mounts including trigger-guard<br />
(incomplete), side-plate decorated with a reclining stag<br />
(cracked), and fore-end cap, three white metal ramrodpipes,<br />
horn fore-end cap, and original horn-tipped wooden<br />
