irpd – institute for rapid product development, 

inspire AG: additive and rapid to your product 

Rapid Prototyping, Additive Manufacturing, Medical Engineering, tissue visualisation and models for presurgical planning are 

our services for the product development and surgeons. 

Fields of Activity 

The additive production technologies Selective 

Laser Sintering (SLS), LaserCusing (Beam melting) 

and 3D-Printing (3DP) are the key competences of 

irpd. 

3D-Scanning of physical objects, engineering 

based on computer tomography (CT) or magnetic 

resonance imaging (MRI) data, 3D visualisation, 

and the fabrication of models for the presurgical 

planning are additional activities. 

Customer Benefits 

The medical industry benefits from the institute’s 

Rapid Prototyping services in the phase of design 

and product engineering. Prototypes are produced 

directly from the 3D CAD files. Small lots 

up to 3,000 parts can be fabricated in various 

plastics or metals (from Stainless Steel to 

Titanium). 

Surgeons receive customised physical models or 

3D visualisations of their patients’ regions of 

interest like bones, arteries, organs, tumours or 

malformations for the presurgical planning. The 

institute assists surgeons during the development 

of new implants and instruments with its 

engineering capacities.

The advantages are evident: due to the additive 

production process the complexity of the part 

geometry is negligible. Almost every geometry 

can be produced – in just a few days. 

Innovation 

The additive production of custom-made 

implants and the use of biomaterials on the SLS 

and LaserCusing processes are tasks of irpd’s 

research activities. 

History 

Since 1996, irpd produces with and develops on 

additive production technologies. In cooperation 

with the industry irpd develops SLS and Laser- 

Cusing powder materials. Since the year 2000, 

irpd produces parts for clinical application and 

extended this field to the wide-ranged services 

described above. 

The inspire AG was founded in 2000 on an initiative 

of SWISSMEM and is located at the Swiss 

Federal Institute of Technology (ETH). inspire AG 

supports the industry with its research activities 

on every topic of the production technology.

MEDIPACK AG, with around 100 highly motivated employees, offers complete solutions for high-quality medical products. From 

development, rapid prototyping, sampling, clean-room production of blister packs and sealing technology through to a complete 

range of packaging services: Everything from one system supplier! 

Every development is based on our knowledge of 

exactly what customers want and then transforming 

these requirements into an appropriate 

packaging solution. With our many years of 

experience and our cutting-edge resources, 

we present rapid innovative solutions in an 

attractive 3D design. We use rapid prototyping 

to produce different types of packaging from 

the original material as pocket samples to use 

in demos. 

Thermoforming dies and sealing tools are 

manufactured on state-of-the-art CNC machines 

using CAD/CAM technology in our own tool and 

moulding department. 

Our task is to thermoform medical blister packs 

for sophisticated uses. We also specialise in 

small-scale and wholesale manufacturing of 

sophisticated medical blister packs in clean-room 

classes 7 or 8. 

We have developed the heat sealing machine 

from the MEDIPACKER TS range specifically for 

the medical industry and for use in the clean 

room. These general-purpose compact devices 

enable a quick change of tools.

to label printing, rinsing with Highly Purified

Metoxit: We take pride in being the first when it 

comes to high-tech ceramic products! 

Watch housing made in zirconia 

We take pride in being the first to offer complex 

high-quality parts made in ceramics. For example 

in 1985, when we were the first company to 

produce a housing in black zirconium oxide for 

the watch industry. The world-renowned watch 

maker IWC based in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, 

asked us to produce a black ceramic case for its 

Da Vinci chronographs, complementing the gold 

models of the series. The result was the striking 

“black Da Vinci” which caused quite a stir in the 

media and among watch collectors. The scratch- 

resistant and impact-proof watch in an elegant 

ceramic finish was born! Metoxit AG has since 

continued to develop innovative products for use 

in luxury watches. 

HIP-compacted ceramics 

for orthopaedic applications 

There are many other fields where we were 

among the first companies to offer viable solutions. 

We were for example the first manufacturer 

of artificial hip joints made in zirconia with 

an FDA master file. We were also ahead of the 

competition when it came to HIP processing of 

aluminum oxide ceramics. With this technology, 

we were able to produce a material of a previously 

unachievable density, greatly improving the 

wear resistance of orthopaedic ceramic implants.

Dental implants made in Ziraldent® ceramics 

with porous zirconium oxide coating 

Over the last few years, we have continuously 

developed new ceramic products for innovative 

applications. One of our latest “firsts” is a dental 

implant made in a ceramic material of the 

highest known strength known as Ziraldent® 

with a bending strength of 2,000 MPa. One key 

advantage of this implant is its patented coating 

Zircapore®, which allows for fast embedding of 

the implant in the bone, thus minimizing the 

need for temporary dental prosthetics. Metoxit 

dental implants of this type are made from 

ceramics that are fully biocompatible and 

chemically inert. They completely eliminate the 

risk of implant rejection, which is a common 

occurrence with metal prosthetics.

Competence in testing, research and consulting 

The RMS Foundation is an independent service laboratory and a research institute. Our services include material and implant 

testing, consulting, training as well as technology transfer. Research is focused on orthopaedics and osteosynthesis and is 

conducted alone or in cooperation with external partners. 

The RMS Foundation is certified according to ISO 9001. Various services are accredited according to ISO/IEC 17025. 

Testing services 

The testing laboratories of the RMS Foundation 

have a wide variety of modern facilities at their 

disposal. The services range from incoming 

material tests, materialographic examinations, 

static and fatigue tests of components and 

products to as far as the analysis of surfaces and 

failures. They cover aspects like wear and corrosion 

resistance, surface cleanliness, chemical 

composition, microstructure, hardness and 

mechanical properties in terms of tensile, 

compression, flexural, torsional or complex 

loading. 

Additional services at the RMS Foundation 

comprise operations like linear and non-linear 

Finite Element Analysis, cleaning and sterilisation 

tests, artificial ageing and literature reviewing. 

The ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation of several test 

methods and our regular participation in international 

round-robin tests guarantee a reliable and

Research 

The RMS Foundation conducts research in the 

fields of biomechanics, materials, tribology,

Steiger Galvanotechnique SA: 

A company of the group Estoppey-Reber 

Is a recognised leader in the production and innovation of surface treatments for medical applications, space, electrotechniques, 

precision mechanics including UV-LIGA Microelectroforming. 

Our surface treatments for medical applications 

are applied to titanium, stainless steel and 

aluminium parts. Titanium and stainless steel 

materials are mainly used for implants and 

aluminium is used for instruments and apparatus 

components. Titanium can be anodised by 

three different processes: the colour anodisation 

(Biocoat®), the alkaline anodisation (Biodize®), as 

well as the glow discharge anodisation (Biocer®). 

Further surface treatments for Titanium and 

stainless steel are electropolishing (Biobright®), 

and passivation. For medical instruments in stainless 

steel or brass, a chromium layer, Medicrom, 

has been qualified for the temporary contact to 

internal organs. Different aluminium anodisations 

are well suited to the treatment of instruments: 

the colour anodisation, the hard anodisation 

and the Ematal which is compatible to the 

blood contact. For applications where an anti- 

seizing coating is required, the Ni-PTFE is a well- 

appropriated solution.

In light of the trend towards more awareness for 

the environment and health, Teca-Print is pleased 

to announce its newest development: FDA-certified 

printing pads. 

Teca-Print’s new FDA printing pads fulfill the

(FDA), whose regulations are being

Sandmaster AG: Defined surfaces through 

advanced blasting technology 

Sandmaster AG is a leading company in the field of surface treatment by sandblasting. 

In cooperation with end-users we have developed a new blasting system which is able to protocol relevant process data into a log 

and read it out for future reference. It can handle traditional media such as aluminum oxide and also newer media based on 

calcium. 

Innovation 

Surface treatment of implants is often acomplished 

by sandblasting. Beside its many advantages 

this traditional process also entails several 

disadvantages such as: not traceable blasting 

parameters and changing properties of the 

blasting media during the process. 

In order to overcome this serious lack of control 

Sandmaster AG decided to develop a new 

generation of blasting machine for medical 

technology products with a focus on smaller 

implants such as screws and dental implants. In 

collaboration with end-users we built the new 

blasting machine S-DT 80, which is basically a 

turntable system with 6 satellites. 

Technical characteristics and benefits 

This new system is based on 3 small pressureblasting 

units. Each individually working system 

features 1,2-mm nozzles, can be pointed very 

accurately and moved independently by the 

PC-controlled linear units. The all-new software is 

controlling the blasting systems and machine 

movements according to a stored recipe suitable 

for the part to be processed. The recipe is executed 

according to the read-in of the barcode 

scanner. This system is not only very convenient, 

it also avoids choosing wrong settings of the 

machine.

During the process the relevant process data are 

recorded in a log and can be read out into a USBdevice 

or a printer. This makes it possible to trace 

back each part to the process which was applied 

to it in the past. With our open PC-system we are 

able to implement further customer wishes such 

as RFID-Batch recognition. 

Furthermore, the S-DT 80 can be connected to a 

robotic system with palletizer. In conjuction with 

an automated blasting media feeding unit this 

complete system can operate up to one shift 

without intervention of an operator.

Medtech Switzerland: The export platform 

for the Swiss medtech industry 

Medtech Switzerland is the export platform for the medical technology industry in Switzerland. The association was initiated 

by the Swiss Federal Government and incorporated by Osec and the Medical Cluster in 2010. The mission of Medtech Switzerland 

is to serve the industry, especially Swiss SMEs, by facilitating export activities to new and existing foreign markets. 

While many medical technology companies in 

Switzerland have already succeeded in reaching a 

significant position in global markets, many 

SMEs with comparable technological backgrounds 

benefit from bundled and coordinated 

trade development programs. By interacting 

with their peers within the industry the best 

practices in global medical technology marketing 

should become available to the entire Swiss 

medtech community. 

As a non-profit trade organization, Medtech 

Switzerland has been devised as an open platform 

for the Swiss medtech industry. All medical 

technology companies creating value in Switzerland 

are invited to use its services. These include 

networking within the industry, reports and 

seminars on principal medtech markets, the 

organization of Swiss Pavilions at trade fairs, 

delegation trips, expert workshops, and the 

organization of working groups. To provide local 

support to export-oriented Swiss businesses in 

their target markets the export platform relies on 

business partners that can meet the highly 

specific requests concerning seniority, specialist 

knowledge and experience in medical technol- 

ogy, and quality of service.

Cooperation with the Medical Cluster 

Each year, a number of businesses from the 

Schaffhausen area join forces to exhibit at 

Medtec Europe in Stuttgart. For several years 

now, ITS has actively supported local companies 

in organising a joint stand at the fair. For Medtec 

Europe 2011, ITS and the Medical Cluster have 

entered into a strategic partnership and will 

share responsibility for organising Switzerland’s 

presence at the event via the “Swiss Pavilion” in 

Hall 4. 

ITS brings technology to businesses 

The ITS Industrial and Technology Centre Schaffhausen 

fosters the technological capability of 

local small and medium-sized enterprises and 

helps them to launch innovative technological 

projects. ITS is both a supporter of and intermediary 

for innovative methods of cooperation. As a

within the area, ITS sets positive impulses for the

The nonprofit association ITS is funded by 

contributions from both private businesses and 

from the public purse and maintains close

scientific community, sectoral associations and

ITS is an important partner both for industry 

overall and for individual business in the Schaffhausen

technology on the one hand and, at the same 

time, has close links to nearby Tuttlingen, just

Medical Cluster: The innovation network of the 

Swiss medical technology industry 

The Medical Cluster is a network of companies and institutions active in the development and production of medical technology. 

Through our platforms we provide opportunities to gather and exchange information for more than 800 domestic and foreign 

medtech experts and specialists every year. 

The Network 

The Medical Cluster is an association comprised 

of members from research, industry, and consulting 

with a strong relation to medical technology. 

Its mission is to strengthen the production site in 

order to establish Switzerland as the world’s best 

location for the development, production and 

distribution of medical technology products. To 

this end we work in close cooperation with domestic 

and foreign industrial and institutional 

partners. The Medical Cluster is funded by membership 

fees, our own services and contributions 

of the cantons of Bern, Solothurn, Aargau and 

Zurich. 

Our Platforms 

In recent years, the Medical Cluster has created 

three platforms that have become meeting and 

exchange opportunities for the entire sector. The 

company visits called “Morning Talk” take place 

every year at three to four renowned companies.

specialists from Switzerland and abroad exchange 

information about the latest technological

World Medtech Forum Lucerne:

From September 25 to 27, 2012, the Swiss supply industry for medical technology will meet with international manufacturers. The 

World Medtech Forum Lucerne is a comprehensive platform for the industry organized by the Medical Cluster and Messe Luzern AG. 

The event features a trade fair, conference and various other meetings – creating a new format for the Swiss medical technology 

industry. 

Trade fair for Swiss suppliers 

At the three-day trade fair the Swiss supplier 

industry, research, development and education 

institutes, as well as institutional partners and 

funding organizations will showcase their 

products and services to international manufacturers 

of medical products. In the tourism city of 

Lucerne – with its KKL Luzern and the modern 

exhibition center – the Swiss supply industry will 

find the perfect setting for presenting itself to a 

specialist public from around the world. 

Conference for exporters 

Every morning over all three days of the trade fair, 

the KKL will host a conference which focuses on 

developments in the relevant global medical 

technology markets and offer decision-making 

guidance for export projects. The conference 

program has been developed by Medtech 

Switzerland. The conference topics will be 

covered in more detail in the facilitated workshops 

held in the afternoon.

Meetings designed for all industry stakeholders 

Meetings are designed as events that promote 

networking among the domestic and international 

participants. Special formats such as the 

opening event, the Medtech Night, the Swiss 

lounge or the One-to-One Partnering event

informal atmosphere. 

The “Center of Attention” will be the main 

meeting point at the trade fair. It will foster the
