Community College’s Continuing Education Division 

offers hundreds of ways for individuals to expand their 

minds, strengthen their bodies and refresh their

The Continuing Education Division promotes the 

lifelong learning process by offering a wide range of

Basics of Quilting 

Learn the basics of quilt making, from the 

choice of fabrics and colors, along with the 

basic assembly of the squares and quilt top, 

to the completion of the quilt and actual 

quilting (hand or machine) design. You will 

leave the class with a quilted table runner

This course offers general information on 

new types of therapies and direction 

toward other resources for the treatment 

of arthritis and fibromyalgia. Discussion

Eating Disorders Awareness 

Eating disorders are serious emotional 

and physical problems that can have lifethreatening 

consequences for females and 

males. The warning signs and symptoms 

of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and 

binge eating disorders include extreme 

emotions, attitudes and behaviors surrounding 

weight and food issues. All eating 

disorders require professional help; 

however, this overview can alert parents, 

educators and other professionals to the 

symptoms, prevention, and treatment of

Meals that Heal 

The food choices we make every day have 

a direct impact on the state of our health. 

Simple dietary changes and specific natural

In spite of what you might have heard,

Online Classes - Education2Go 

Education 2Go Online Classes are delivered in an online interactive format via the 

Internet. You will be able to read lessons, complete assignments and ask questions for 

the duration of the class. The class material will be supplemented by interactive multimedia 

content via the World Wide Web. 

Each class is designed to cover 12 lessons over a prescribed six-week period and you 

will have 10 days to complete each assignment and send it to your instructor for evaluation 

and feedback. To measure your own self-paced progress, you will receive a “final 

exam” at the end of the six-week class. This must be completed and returned to the 

instructor within 10 days. Once you complete the final exam, it is your responsibility to 

print the online completion letter before the session closes. To participate, you must 

have Windows 98, Windows XP or Vista and have internet access.

Westmoreland County Community College is 

a partner with the Workforce & Economic 

Development Network for Pennsylvania 

(WEDnetPA). WEDnetPA assists those 

employers who qualify with training for their 

employees through the Guaranteed Free 

Training (GFT) Program. This program is 

funded through the Department of Community and Economic Development. 

Companies that qualify can receive up to $450 for Basic Skills Training for eligible 

employees and up to $700 per employee for Information Technology Training. 

Basic Skills Training includes instruction in a variety of entry level and basic skills 

such as:

Medical Insurance Billing Certificate Program 

The medical industry is experiencing a tremendous demand for individuals 

with knowledge of medical office operations, which includes billing 

and coding, processing of insurance forms and using medical software. 

According to the American Medical Association, there is a need for more 

than 1.2 million medical billing specialists in the United States. This profession 

is listed as one of the fastest growing professions in allied health. 

The noncredit Medical Insurance Billing Certificate Program is 

designed to prepare you for careers in medical billing and coding support, 

post-changes and payments, and follow-up on third-party reimbursements 

by initiating appeals and/or collections of unpaid balances. Medical insurance 

billing technicians should have good and accurate math, reading and 

writing skills (abilities at the 10th grade level). Technicians should have

Advanced Cardiac Life Support 

(ACLS) 

This AHA course is designed for healthcare 

providers capable of invasive techniques 

to evaluate and manage the first 

10 minutes of an adult ventricular fibrillation 

or ventricular tachycardia (VF/VT) 

arrest. This includes doctors, emergency 

physicians, nurses, paramedics, and Pre- 

Hospital Registered Nurses (PHRNs). 

Providers are expected to manage 10 core 

ACLS cases: a respiratory emergency, four 

types of cardiac arrest (simple VF/VT, 

complex VF/VT, PEA, and asystole), four 

types of pre-arrest emergencies (bradycardia, 

stable tachycardia, unstable tachycardia, 

and acute coronary syndromes), and 

stroke. Practical and written evaluations 

are required. Course is now approved for 

continuing education credit for respiratory

Act 180 – Mandatory In-Service Classes for 

Certified Police Officers 

The 2008 mandatory, in-service program requires all municipal police officers 

to complete 12 hours of classroom instruction, exclusive of administrative 

and examination time. There are four classes scheduled this year. The 

Legal Updates class is mandatory. Officers must take at least 12 hours of 

instruction, not necessarily at the same time or location. Locations and 

dates follow the course descriptions. 

NEW - Legal Update 

(Three-Hour Required) 08–201 

This is a three-hour mandatory In-Service 

Training Program required course that covers 

legal issues affecting municipal police 

officers throughout the Commonwealth. 

This course, a staple in the MIST curriculum, 

will cover new criminal and traffic 

laws, rules of criminal procedure updates, 

and changes in other statutes related to 

law enforcement. The 2008 course will also 

address landmark United States Supreme 

Court opinions and key Pennsylvania court 

decisions regarding search and seizure as 

well as other pertinent criminal and traffic 

case law. 

NEW - Radical Islam: 

A Law Enforcement Primer 

(Three-Hour Required) 08–202 

Topical Areas: This course would provide 

an overview of the factors and issues 

related to a radical view of Islam such as: 

the differences between mainstream Islam 

and its radical fringes; the principles, justification, 

and concepts of radical Islam 

and what they mean to the police officer; 

the concepts of Jihad and martyrdom and 

their implications for law enforcement 

activities; detecting logistical, financial, 

and material support for Jihadist activities; 

recognizing potentially threatening 

activities in the community; recognizing 

groups following a radical philosophy. 

NEW - Street Encounters- 

Investigatory Detention & 

Warrantless Searches (Three-Hour 

Elective) 08–327 

A scenario-based block of instruction 

aimed at the officer on the street. Legal 

concepts that will be addressed include: 

reasonable suspicion, probable cause, 

“Terry” stops, car stops, investigatory 

detention vs. arrest, and exceptions to 

search warrant requirements. The scenario 

based training will be based on 

video clips depicting common street 

encounters and allow student/instructor 

interaction which will reinforce an officer’s 

knowledge of the topic and allow for officer 

input and discussion while adhering to 

pertinent case holdings. 

NEW - Games Criminals Play: 

Unusual Weapons & Concealment 

(Three-Hour Elective) 08–328 

Criminals can be quite innovative in their 

attempts to conceal their illegal activities 

and evade detection and arrest from law 

enforcement. They routinely have secret 

compartments built into their attire, vehicles 

and homes to hold weapons, contraband 

and currency. This course is designed 

to both inform law enforcement officers of 

the items that are available to suspects 

that pose a risk to officer safety, as well as 

to advise them of the creativity of suspects. 

It is imperative that we learn and 

adapt to their new tricks and techniques 

that endanger the police officers across 

the Commonwealth. This course will focus 

on officer safety issues and examine tricks 

and techniques that criminals use.

“Education2Go.” The curriculum is 

authored and sponsored by the Hazardous 

Materials Training and Research Institute 

in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. ET Online is sponsored

Improvement of Postsecondary Education

Tuition Reduction for Older Adults

Class Cancellation 

Class cancellations and college closing due to inclement weather or other emergency conditions 

will be announced on area radio and television stations and the Internet. As road 

conditions vary widely during inclement weather, you are advised to use your own judgment 

in deciding whether to attend classes. 

Textbooks 

The Youngwood Campus Bookstore normal hours of operation are 8 a.m.-6:30 p.m., 

Monday through Thursday and 8 a.m.-5 p.m., Friday. See our website – www.wccc.edu –

should be purchased at the main campus in Youngwood. If you are unable to travel to the

From New Kensington: Take Route 366 toward Valley High School, turn right onto Route 

780 East (Powers Drive). Proceed to the top of the hill, bear left and continue approximately 

1 mile. Turn left on East Hill Drive. Turn left at the WCCC sign. 

Bushy Run Education Center 

From Greensburg: Take Route 66 North to Route 22 heading west toward Pittsburgh. At 

the third traffic light, turn left onto Mellon Road and proceed approximately 1.5 miles. The 

Bushy Run Center is on the left. 

From Murrysville: Head east on Route 22 toward Delmont. Turn right at the trafic light 

onto Mellon Road and proceed 1.5 miles. 

Greene County Education Center 

From I-79 North or South: Take Waynesburg (Exit 14) onto Route 21 East. Proceed to 

the first traffic light and make a left onto Progress Drive. Proceed left. Make the first right 

curve which will take you to EverGreene Technology Park. WCCC is located on the right 

side of the building. 

From 21 West: Proceed under I-79 and follow the directions above. 

From 21 East: Make a right onto Progress Drive at the light just after the Greene County 

Airport and follow the directions above. 

Indiana County Community College Center 

From Blairsville: Take Route 119 North to the Clymer/Indiana Exit and exit at 

Clymer Route 286. 

From Punxsutawney: Take Route 119 South and exit at the Clymer/Indiana Exit and 

exit at Clymer Route 286. At the end of the exit ramp, turn right onto Airport Road. 

Continue approximately 100 yards and turn left into the parking lot. 

Laurel Education Center 

From Route 30: Take Route 981 North toward Latrobe. (Route 981 becomes Lloyd 

Avenue.) The center is located on the right just before crossing the Loyalhanna Creek

From Route 22-New Alexandria: Take Route 981 South and turn right onto Derry Road

Firing Range Open House 

WCCC Public Safety Training Center

Noon - 6 p.m. 

Certified law enforcement officers are invited to a Firing Range Open 

House at the WCCC Public Safety Training Center in Smithton to 

experience our new firing range. Plan to attend to try out 

manufacturers’ latest weaponry, targets and other products of interest 

for law enforcement 

officers.
