On Understand<strong>in</strong>g<br />

This book is not <strong>in</strong>tended to encourage <strong>for</strong>eigners to like<br />

<strong>American</strong>s or want to imitate <strong>the</strong>m. Some visitors from<br />

abroad will have positive feel<strong>in</strong>gs toward most of <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>American</strong>s <strong>the</strong>y meet. O<strong>the</strong>rs will not. Some will want to<br />

rema<strong>in</strong> <strong>for</strong> a long time <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> United States, o<strong>the</strong>rs will<br />

want to go back home as soon as possible. People <strong>in</strong> both<br />

<strong>the</strong>se groups, however, will be more likely to benefit from<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir stays <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> States if <strong>the</strong>y understand <strong>the</strong> natives.<br />

Understand here means hav<strong>in</strong>g a reasonably accurate set<br />

of ideas <strong>for</strong> <strong>in</strong>terpret<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> behavior <strong>the</strong>y see.<br />

Let’s look at an example, one that causes many <strong>for</strong>eigners<br />

to have negative feel<strong>in</strong>gs toward <strong>American</strong>s.<br />

Tariq Nassar is Egyptian. In his society, people place a<br />

high premium on family loyalty. Obligations to parents<br />

and sibl<strong>in</strong>gs are an important part of daily life. Tariq has<br />

come to <strong>the</strong> United States to earn a master’s degree <strong>in</strong><br />

civil eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g. Through <strong>the</strong> U.S. university he is attend<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

he has a “host family,” a local family that periodically<br />

<strong>in</strong>vites him to <strong>the</strong>ir home <strong>for</strong> d<strong>in</strong>ner or some o<strong>the</strong>r activity.<br />

The family’s name is Wilson. Mr. Wilson is a middleaged<br />

eng<strong>in</strong>eer. His wife works half-time <strong>in</strong> a lawyer’s office.<br />

Their two children, a daughter who is twenty-two and<br />

a son who is n<strong>in</strong>eteen, are both university students, and<br />

one of <strong>the</strong>m is attend<strong>in</strong>g a university <strong>in</strong> a distant state.<br />

Mr. Wilson’s fa<strong>the</strong>r died two years ago. His mo<strong>the</strong>r,<br />

Tariq learns, lives <strong>in</strong> a nurs<strong>in</strong>g home. One Sunday after<br />

hav<strong>in</strong>g d<strong>in</strong>ner with <strong>the</strong> Wilsons, Tariq goes with <strong>the</strong>m to<br />

visit Mr. Wilson’s mo<strong>the</strong>r. The nurs<strong>in</strong>g home is full of frail,<br />

elderly people, most of whom are sitt<strong>in</strong>g silently <strong>in</strong> lounge<br />

areas or ly<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir rooms. A few are play<strong>in</strong>g cards or<br />

dom<strong>in</strong>oes <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> “game room” or are watch<strong>in</strong>g television.
