WORLD NEWS
World airline shares tumble
Shares in global airlines have
fallen by 40% in the year to
date, plummeting 14% in the
past four weeks alone as the effects
of the deepening Eurozone
crisis have spread, according to
IATA’s October-November Financial
Monitor. Airline shares are
now close to the lows set in early
2009 - and they have fallen faster
than other industries, says IATA,
which added that no one region
has been left untouched. While
many airlines posted net profits
in the third quarter, those results
were down by 50% compared to
the same period last year.
Euro crisis threatens lending
Europe’s stricken banking sector
has put the brakes on lending,
forcing airlines and other operators
to look further afield for loans to finance
plane purchases. Air France-
KLM recently said it was looking to
banks in China and Japan to help
finance up to 15% of its new plane
purchases, while Middle Eastern
airlines are turning to the Islamic
market. Tim Clark, president of
Emirates, which has orders for new
planes worth more than $84bn,
told Reuters that he had been
‘planning for finance from the European
Banks’ and that ‘it was a bit
difficult now’. Boeing has also said
the European credit crunch could
affect its business in 2012.
HK to get budget airline
Hong Kong is to get its own no-frills
airline next summer when existing
carrier Hong Kong Express Airlines
adopts the low-cost model, according
to the International Herald Tribune.
The still-unnamed airline will
operate a fleet of up to 15 Airbus
A320s and will serve destinations
in neighbouring countries.
AA could seek US Airways merger as it enters Chapter 11
AA’s $40bn Airbus and Boeing aircraft orders are ‘solid’, says new CEO
American Airlines could seek
a merger with US Airways to
bring added bulk to its routes
and hubs in a move that would
vault it back up to top spot as
the world’s largest airline by passenger
numbers - a position currently
occupied by rival United
Continental.
American has slipped to third
place among the big US airlines,
while US Airways is the fifth
biggest. AMR and US Airways
had combined 2010 revenue of
$34bn, about $2bn more than
Delta, the second of the ‘big
four’ US airlines.
A merger would also bring a
more aggressive management
style to AA, according to analysts,
which would be critical
to the airline as it restructures
during the next 18 months of
Chapter 11 proceedings.
The airline, together with parent
company AMR Corporation
and regional carrier American
Eagle, filed voluntary petitions
for creditor protection in the US
WEEKLY AVIATION HEADLINES
Bankruptcy Court in New York
last week. The AMR board of
directors said that a Chapter 11
reorganization was ‘in the best
interest of the company and its
stakeholders’.
The process will allow both carriers
to conduct ‘business as usual’
as they restructure debt, costs
and other obligations, aided by
the $4.1bn in unrestricted cash
held by AMR to cover costs.
In the wake of the Chapter 11
proceedings, AMR appointed
Thomas W Horton as chair and
CEO of both the parent company
and of American. He replaces
Gerard Apey, who has joined private
equity firm Emerald Creek
Group as a director.
Horton emphasized that AA
would emerge stronger from
Chapter 11. “It’s a well worn
path,” he said, “but we’re confident
we’ll make it succeed”.
He added that the airline’s outstanding
order for 260 Airbus
A320 family jets and 200 Boeing
737s, worth $40bn, with
American says
flights will
operate as
normal while
Chapter 11
reorganization
takes place
Boeing
options to buy 465 more, remained
on solid ground.
The company’s spending over
the next 18 months is in the
hands of the bankruptcy courts,
but analysts believe that the orders
will go ahead as planned,
with new fuel-efficient aircraft
needed to help the carrier remain
competitive.
Until last week, AA was the only
US airline that hadn’t filed for
bankruptcy protection in the
slump following the terrorist attacks
in 2001 - a fact that analysts
say was a ‘handicap’. Its
major rivals were able to restructure
and reduce costs and have
since returned to profitability.
American, however, has been
hobbled by a much higher cost
base. It spends over $600m per
year more than its rivals due to
labour-contract rules. The added
burden of a 50% rise in the
price of fuel over the past five
years has also taken its toll: the
carrier has posted losses in 14 of
the past 16 quarters.

Airbus qualification of AkzoNobel base coat/clear coat system
AkzoNobel Aerospace Coatings announced qualification at Airbus of their Aerobase base
coat/clear coat system. The Aerobase base coat and Aviox clear coat UVR system was qualified
successfully at Airbus, according to specification AIMS 04.04.033 and AIMS 04.04.037.
In addition to the standard AIMS 04.04.033 base coat/clear coat system specification, AIMS
04.04.037 includes
a selectively removable
system (SRS).
SRS incorporates
an extra sealer
coat between
primer and base
coat which allows
the selective removal
of only the
base coat/clear
coat system in
preparation for
repainting. This
avoids the need to
reapply the primer
and so results in
further time and
cost savings during
their relationship, Boeing and the IAM have
been discussing the potential for an early
contract extension for several weeks. The
current contract is set to expire in September
2012. Independent of that effort, Boeing
has been conducting a review of potential
sites for 737 MAX production since the
company announced in August that it will
build a new-engine variant of the marketleading
a proposed new labor agreement, and the
company is prepared to locate 737 MAX
production in Renton provided the economics
contained in that proposal are achieved.
Upon ratification of such an agreement by
hourly employees, Boeing says it will make
the necessary investment to produce Next-
Generation 737s and 737 MAXs in its existing
Renton facility.
Airbus: North America will need 5,901 new passenger aircraft in next 20 years
According to Airbus’ recently released Airbus Global Market Forecast
(GMF), the US and Canada will require 5,901 new passenger
aircraft of more than 100 seats between today and 2030. In that
same time period, there will be a need for 414 new freighter aircraft.
This total of 6,315 new aircraft deliveries has an estimated
value of $648bn.
By 2030, North America will rank third, behind Asia-Pacific and
Europe, in world traffic. With a 20-year growth in revenue passenger
miles of 3.3%, North America remains one of the world’s
strongest markets. In fact, today, and in 2030, domestic US traffic
is and will continue to be the largest single air traffic flow region
on the planet. In all, the region is forecast to see 66% growth in
passenger fleet.
Even with its size and maturity, North American inter-regional traffic
has grown by 11% over the last 10 years. Currently, more than
25% of the total world revenue passenger miles are carried on US
and Canadian airlines.
While the growth rate of the North American market is less dramatic
than in some expanding regions of the world such as China
and India, the US and Canada have the highest percentage of existing
aircraft that will need to be replaced in the coming decades.
Specifically, 41% of the aircraft currently in service in North
America will need to be replaced over the next 20 years – greater
than in any other region of the world.
Airbus says the A320neo and the A350XWB have made dramatic
inroads in the US market. Orders and commitments for the
A320neo include US customer airlines:
• American Airlines - 130
• Republic/Frontier - 80
• Spirit Airlines - 45
• JetBlue Airways - 40
• Virgin America - 30
The GMF shows the need for some 1,140 twin-aisle aircraft in
North America in the next 20 years, and most of those have yet to
be competed for. To date, firm orders for the A350XWB include
US customer airlines:
• United Airlines - 25
• US Airways - 22
• Hawaiian Airlines - 6
Overall, the market for passenger aircraft in North America is expected
to grow by 66% over the next 20 years. The growth for
dedicated freighters in the region is even greater, with a growth
rate in the same period of some 80%. Globally, by 2030, some
27,800 new aircraft valued at $3.5tr will be required to satisfy the
robust future market demand.
With more than 3,100 aircraft sold (including to US-based leasing
companies) and a backlog of 1,000, there are currently more than
1,100 Airbus aircraft in operation throughout the US and Canada.
sugar feedstocks, including corn. In the future,
used as feedstocks.The contract supports
U.S. government efforts to identify and accelerate
the commercial availability of nextgeneration,
non-fossil jet fuel. Isobutanolderived
biofuels will offer new renewable
JetBlue Airways completed an agreement
to purchase two bundles of eight slot pairs,
one at New York LaGuardia Airport (LGA)
and the second at Ronald Reagan Washington
National Airport (DCA), recently made
available in an FAA auction. A slot pair provides
authorization for one daily arriving
flight and one daily departing flight and will
allow JetBlue to double its already popular
service at both airports in 2012.
An A320 Full Flight Simulator (FFS) has
been put in place in Venice (Italy) at the SuperJet
International’s Training Center. The
A320 FFS is an EASA (JAR-FSTD A) fully compliant
Synthetic training device. The FFS has
been transferred from Alitalia Training Center
in Rome to the SuperJet International Training
Center in Tessera (Venice), close to the
International Marco Polo airport. In February
2012 the simulator will be submitted to
the approval of the Italian Civil Aviation Authority
(ENAC) and training courses will start
accordingly. With this acquisition, SuperJet
International’s facility in Venice becomes a
Flight Training Organization (FTO).
Cambridge Airport released that it is one
of the first UK airports to introduce the new
GPS enabled (APV Baro RNAV Instrument Approach)
procedure to supplement its existing
SRA/ILS/NDB and modifiable PAPI facilities.
The approach has been validated for its principal
runways, 23 and 05. Cambridge is now
one of the few airports in the UK that can
offer the complete spectrum of commercial
pilot training capabilities outside of the major
London Airports. The airport is regularly used
by military aircraft, commercial aircraft up to
Boeing 757 or Airbus320 capacity, as well as
business and general aviation and the instrument
approach system can now be utilised by
all aircraft with the relevant certification.
United Continental Holdings received Federal
from the FAA. A team of more than
500 employees from both carriers worked
together to evaluate closely each pre-integration
program, process and operating specification
from both airlines to determine the
