The ACNA Convention
The 10 th ACNA Convention was held at the Newark Hilton
Hotel on September 3-5, 2010. Delegates, Families and
Friends from the 23 alumni associations of the US and
Canada gathered during the Labor Day weekend. The
Convention was graced by the presence of APO USA
National President Maggie Katz and APO Philippines National
President Mel Adriano. The three-day affair included a
Welcome Fellowship and Talent Night on Friday, the
Convention Proper on Saturday and the Election and Bidding
of the next Convention on Sunday. The Going Away Brunch
was held at the nearby Goldilocks Restaurant.

Chairman Mar Garchitorena, Director Tony Amon, Past COB
Roehl Reyes and Past President Art Rivera represented
APOGLA. PP Troy Agagon and GLA Stalwart Ophel Amon
served as Alternate Delegates. We participated fully and well
in the deliberations and discussions and helped keep the
proceedings in line. Bro. Mar so eloquently presented the
proposals to the CBL that will be incorporated and
implemented.
There were also Chapter Reunions and Hometown
gatherings held during the weekend with different programs
of service and giving back to their chapters and provinces. It
was wonderful to note that the essence of APO is getting
into the hearts of everyone and allowing us to fellowship and
work with one another for a better world to live.
The North vs. South Ryder Cup Golf Tournament
Another event held during the Labor Day Weekend was
the Biennial Golf Tournament between Northern and

Southern California. South Chairman Mar Garchitorena and
North Chairman Cesar Garingan made sure that their teams
had the best players competing. South Captain Bobet Lara
was sidelined by foot injury so he watched the matches at
the gallery stand! The first round was held on Thursday,
September 2 and featured the Team Play format, which saw
the Northerners, take an early lead and beat the Southerners.
On the second day of Match Play, a great battle of wits and
skills saw the South Team overcome the deficit and trounced
the North for a Final aggregate score of 16-11. On our flight,
South Manny Martinez was up against North Ben Dayao
while I had North Mel Cancino. Manny beat Ben 4 Up 3 holes
to go while I beat Mel 5 up 4 holes to go!
The APOGLA Family Escapade
On Saturday morning of September 4, the APOGLA family,
stormed nearby HomeTown Buffet Newark for the first order

The recent ACNA
Convention was quite tense
for me, but ‘only’ during the
BOD meeting where I was to
represent the whole of
APOGLA to deliberate on our
position against APOHA. I
explained and tried to
convince them - for good
reasons - that APOHA’s
recognition should be null and
void for it has not complied
with the necessary
requirements. Somehow, it was to no avail. Brothers and
Sisters that we all are (supposedly), everyone in the room
wants us to work on forgiveness, peace and to have
harmonious relationships with everyone involved.
Nevertheless, I delivered our position and our sentiment why
we oppose APOHA’s recognition by ACNA.
Every ACNA Convention brings or provides many different
kinds of excitement and fanfare to APO Brothers, Sisters
and our familial members. The recent convention was no
different. With GLA’s one hundred percent Delegate
participation, the convention was successful. We had a great
time and at the same time accomplished some important
APO ACNA matters, namely: we have accomplished the
approval of necessary recommended amendments to
APOPHIL by-laws that will make ACNA and APOPHIL CBL
compatible to each other. Although this is only the first step,
there are still much work to be done before this will become
a reality.
Please join me in congratulating our Brothers and Sisters
from APOGLA who got into different positions in ACNA and
the Librado I Ureta Foundation as well, namely; Brod Roehl
Reyes for ACNA’s 2nd Vice-President; for the LIU Foundation,
Brod Art Rivera was elected as Secretary and Sis
Emma Galang as Treasurer. On a later development, Brod
Francis Franco was named Chairman of ARNA Comelec.
I am also proud to announce to you that APOGLA won,
unopposed, the hosting of the APO ACNA 11th Biennial
Convention in 2012. In this regard, during our September
11 Execom and BOD joint meeting, everyone agreed that
Brod Art Rivera will be the Overall Chairman of the
Convention which he later accepted without any hesitation.
Let’s give Brod Art a big round of applause.
Brod Roehl Reyes, as the 2nd Vice President of ACNA,
one of his primary functions is to be in-charge of the ACNA
Convention. So, let us join hands and help these two Brothers
make the 11th ACNA Convention a very memorable
celebration and, as usual, one that is for the books!
Moving on to our next activities, this Saturday, September
18, will be our presentation of candidates. To those who want
to serve our beloved APOGLA, I am encouraging everyone to
attend and let your voices be heard. Our COMELEC is ready
to assist you. Our Executive positions and the Board of
Directors’ position is open for anyone qualified. ‘Kung hindi
ngayon, kailan pa’?
Fourth quarter is almost here. October: our GMM,
Operation Gratitude, Election of Officers and Halloween party
for our APO Kids. More information will be announced later.
November is our Thanksgiving Celebration and Awards Night.
December is one of our most awaited celebrations of the
year: our Christmas/APO Anniversary Party and induction
of our new set of Officers. Our respective Chairpersons of

BOARD OF DIRECTORS MESSAGE

There is no substitute for preparation. In the NFL they prepare
for a week, for a month, or even longer – for a mere hour of
game. Indeed, preparation is everything.
The APOGLA BOD together with the ACNA convention
delegates, and Past Presidents had to convene so many
times that usually lasted ‘till almost midnight each time.
Instrumental to the planning and preparation was the
“Executive Director”, an appointed position created by a
resolution passed by APOGLA BOD, we had ready reference.
As a result of these many meetings, the following resolution
were passed.
(1)Board Resolution: Denying/Rejecting APOHA’s request
for endorsement.
(2)Board Resolution: A formal position paper to ACNA
BOARD be submitted via email on August 22,2010. In
actuality, this position paper was sent to each AA President
via USPS, then thru email and was presented by Bro. Pres.
Lito to ACNA BOARD at the convention.
(3)Board Resolution: Submission of the one page “OPEN
LETTER” to ACNET (as suggested by Bro. Roehl Reyes) to
be lifted from TNB August 2010 newsletter.
(4) CRC amendments submitted to APO Philippines a
resolution that AA’s cannot be created without endorsement
from neighboring AA’s – as discussed by Bro. COB Mar.
And because we like to protect our brother who was
elected as ACNA 2 nd Vice President, who will be in charge of
the 2012 ACNA convention, the APOGLA BOD, together with
APOGLA delegates, and Past President Toti Ayo, in
anticipation that APOHA will bid to host the convention, urged
Bro. Pres. Lito bid to host the 2012 ACNA convention which
we got.
After all, we showed at the convention site prepared,
complete with uniform (thanks to Bro. Egay) and scheduled
activities (thanks to our First Lady and Bro. Tony Linsangan).
Finally, we saw, we heard, we learned, and we experienced
from the convention that “position(title) does not make a man,
but rather a man makes the positon.” Becoming a President
or COB of ACNA is not enough, you have to proved yourself,
to be dependable and carry the load of the title.
Before I end, the support and motivation extended to all
the APOGLA delegates by the APOGLA members, families
and children are highly appreciated. Folks, you are the best!
CONGRATULATIONS!!!

CONGRATULATIONS
Bro. Lester Arevalo was appointed by APO President Mel Adriano
as Commissioner of the International Relations Commission. He
sits as a member of the Board of ICAPO (International Council of
Alpha Phi Omega). This position was previously held by Bro. Chato
Marinas. The term of office is from August 23, 2010 up to August
22 2017 and reports directly to the President of APO Phils.

of the day. Forty-six members and 6 kids enjoyed the Omelet
Bar and the Breakfast Buffet of everyone’s favorite morning
dishes including Troy’s chocolate milk!
While the convention was going on, the wives, children
and family members took a scenic drive up to the Fisherman’s
Wharf and San Francisco Chinatown. The soup of the day
was Clam Chowder! For more of their adventure, let them
share their respective stories.
Another favorite place was the nearby Vietnamese
Restaurant where we savored the famous Pho So!
The Hospitality Suite
Adjoining Rooms 2142 and 2144 was the Central Station
of APOGLA. It was in these rooms where unending fellowship
hosted brothers, sisters and friends from all over, an unending
supply of Corona and Hennessy plus the unending serving
of great party foods! FL Josie made sure that there is food
for everyone and FL Caroline provided the very useful
microwave. The well of Cognac and beer was so deep
courtesy of the brothers who made sure that we shall not
thirst. One can see the joy of get-together, the happy faces
of every brother, sister, family member that walked into our
humble suite sharing stories and thanking us for our
graciousness and hospitality. We came, we saw and we
relished in each other the value of friendship, the gift of family
and the love for each other during this special weekend.
There were tears of joy, laughter, smiles and memories that
will last a lifetime. We are APOGLA, Firm in Loyalty!
Another favorite spot was the Karaoke Bar and Disco of
the hotel where the sis and brods danced the night away. It
brought back memories and stories of the Brods’ Bible
Classes in Hawaii!
The Hotel lobby was likewise a grand arena where
everyone mingled with other members; all were proudly
wearing their AA colors. A sea of blue t-shirts at the grand
foyer was worn by APOGLA.
The New ACNA and Librado Ureta Foundation Officers
Sunday, September 5 saw the election of the new Officers
for the Development year 2011-2012 led by President Cora
de Jesus (British Columbia), First Vice President Ian Beltrano
(San Diego), Second Vice President Roehl Reyes (GLA) and
Auditor Thom Pascual (Hawaii). The Secretary and PRO will

be appointed at a later date. The respective Presidents of
each AA will sit as Directors and they will among themselves
elect the Chairman of the Board.
In another election, The Librado Ureta Foundation
announced the new officers: Nancy Ureta (President), Art

The Newark Experience
The 10 th ACNA Biennial Convention is finally behind us
and is now a page in the history books. We learned a lot, we
cherished the fellowship and friendships and we look forward
to another beginning. We will be hosting the 2012
Convention, the third time for APOGLA. One thing is sure,
we went as one and we came home as one!
Here’s to a beautiful and exciting weekend together, cheers!

TEAM TEAM SOCAL SOCAL DEFENDED DEFENDED GOLF GOLF CUP
CUP
Team Socal is still the champion. It was unprecedented since
this is the first time that there was a back to back winner of
this Annual event. The coveted Librado Ureta Service Cup
is now back in the hands of TEAM SOCAL since Northern
California kept it and did not award it to us even though we
also won last year.
This year’s championship game coincided with the ACNA
Convention and Northern California team hosted it. It was a
2 day golfing event held on September 2 & 3. The 1st it was
played at Sunol Country Club day and it was a team match
play format. The 2 nd day was individual matches and it was
played in Summit[pointe Golf Course in Milpitas, Ca. TEAM
SOCAL fielded a total of 18 golfers mostly from APOGLA
and 5 members from Southbay.
The Team Socal team members were, Brods Mar
Garchitorena (Team Captain), Mervyn Gucilitar, Tony Gomez,
Jimmy Magsino, Rene naval, Rudy Ruan, Bong Hernandez,
Wilson Lautchang, Pj AClan, Mike Melendez, Pat Afan,
Stephen Castro, Audie Grey, Angel Pangilinan, Art Rivera,
Manny Martinez, Leo Castello, & Sis Melody Ang-Gayon .
Other notable team member that were not able to make it
were; Brod Bobet lara (injured), Boy Medina, Vinz Argonza
& Raul Medina. They played and contributed in our last years
win paving the way for TEAM SOCAL retaining the
Championship Cup.
Our Brothers up North were surprised what hit them because
judging from the line up, TEAM SOCAL was the underdogs.
The North Team took a 3 points lead in the first day match
play event with the score of 5 ½ to 2 ½ but TEAM SOCAL
battled back fiercely and took the 12 matches & tied one
match out of the 18 matches the next day that secured our
win. It was a serious and hard fought battle but in the end
the bragging right as the better team belongs to the TEAM
SOCAL.
CONGRATULATION FOR JOB WELL DONE. Hoping that
we still have the appetite for a THREEPEAT!!!! This time Team
Socal Captain Bro Cesar promised that they will be more

Our Election Day: October 30, 2010
The COMELEC:

Candidates presentation:
September and October GMM.
As our tradition, September starts the following:
1) The official opening of filing for candidacy for all positions,
2) Filing of application for absentee ballots (for the general
election only)
3) September 30, 2010 as COMELEC’s deadline for mailing
out absentee ballots to qualified applicants
(and they will be mailed out even if they are blanks).
They must be back in COMELEC’s hands by October 29,
2010 2400 hours PST.
The list of eligible voters shall be obtained from the
Membership Committee through the BOD as soon as
possible.
A few notes for the General Election
a. The Election Guidelines furnished to the COMELEC by
the BOD shall be completely adhered to.
b. Ballot forms would not contain control numbers to ensure
anonymity.
The Comelec shall institute uniformity in combination with
distinct authentication method(s) to ensure that only valid
and legitimate ballots are honored and counted/
canvassed.
The respective candidates’ representatives shall be
thoroughly briefed of the procedure for absolute credence.
