, .One forum will be a meeting in
Septemberof this year in Ottawa to bridge
the-knowledge gap, to develop further
dialogue, and to establish better thrusts
andplaris fornational action. Its einphasis
will be on, national action, and the
Philippines will be represented in this
dialogue by a strong team. Establishing
a workingpartnership involvesanetwork
ofplayers from industry,governmentand
development agencies at n,ational level,
as is happening here now, and this
relationship must be carried on' in
everyday work.
Also being discussed now is a
marketing communication idea on what
is called the "supernutrient edge". It is
actually an advocacy, linking athletic '
performance with adequate essential
micronutrients or supernutrients. It will
have the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta as a
launching pad, reaching a climax in the
2000 Olympics in Sydney. The vehicles
may vary. It could be basketball in the
Philippines, or .a whole lot of- sporting
events.
A lesson plan on micronutrients is
also being drawn up for integration in
the school' curriculum and non-forrrial
educational systems like the boy scouts.
Another idea is to use the potential of
mothers and prominentwomenin various
countries, like the Princess'of Thailand
or an eminent lady in the Philippines,
to head a coalition of women in support
ofmicronutrient advocacy. This would
, be later expanded to create a global
network pushing for the elimination of
micronutrientdeficiency. For thatmatter,
the partnership can be expandedbetween
industries, between governments, and
betweenagencies in orderto create a global
movement on micronutrients similar to,
the GreenMovementor the Anti-Smoking
Movement. Many countries have
comntitted themselves to the elimination
of micronutrient deficiencies by the year
2000. This cannotbe achieved unless there
is a major movement in industry. I am
very confident this is coming.
