Pres Says.
Well Ladies and Gents, Spring has Sprung!
Welcome to our September edition of Running AMOC.
We have been quite busy over the last few months, it was great to see so many people
putting their hands up and organizing runs and nights out etc.
In August we started early in the month with the Victorian Distributors of Aston
Martin, Trivett Classic, inviting us to an exclusive viewing of the new Virage, what a
magnificent motor car! Many of us enjoyed Trivett’s hospitality and we may have
convinced a few new owners into joining the club.
Mike and Maree organized a run for us, we met in the Northern suburbs at Epping
(except for Barry who still doesn’t know where it is) after an very enjoyable drive
and a stop for morning tea we settled in for a long lunch at the Donnybrook Cheese
Factory. With 11AM’s in the convoy and 21 folk we all had a great day.
Later in the month Richard C arranged a night at the theatre for us, Bond a Rama
was a very enjoyable stage show featuring take offs of 22 Bond films in a bit over an
hour, some of our diehards then kicked on until the wee small hours.
Early September saw Tony and Heather plan a great run, 11 AM’s set off from the
sleepy little township of Warrandyte, after a scenic drive over the Black Spur we
arrived at our destination. Stonelea is a magnificent old homestead at Acheron,
Tony had formulated a cunning plan! A tour of the homestead had been arranged for
the ladies and the gents jumped back in their cars (some said minus the handbrakes)
for a bit of spirited motoring around Eildon weir. Later we all enjoyed a long lunch,
and a leisurely drive back to Melbourne.
We have a bit of sad news in that one of our long time members Ian Bell has been
unwell I am sure you will all join me in wishing Ian a speedy recovery and we hope to
see him back at the pub soon.
Our get together with our South Australian friends in October is progressing well
I believe we have about 44 folk in 20 AM’s ready for a fun weekend.
That about wraps it up from me,
See you at the pub or on our next run
Cheers
Neil.
Jason Vochala, Bruna and Lucy Capodanno Some German thing.
A nice clear sky greeted us as we prepared for Mike and Maree’s run. In spite of the
forecast being to the contrary, all looked good. We dusted off AML-8 after an
uncharacteristic 3 month hibernation. Couldn’t even remember how much fuel it had
in it. A cough and splutter, and she burst into life.
As we made our way to the meeting spot near the corner of Cooper St, and the Hume
Fwy in Epping, we either saw others making their way, or were passed by them. Just
about everyone had arrived by 0915 Hrs, with time for a coffee at the roadhouse.
Once Maree had given us all a briefing, and some route notes, it was off, departing
around 1000 Hrs. The route was basically one giant loop that crossed over it’s self
toward the end. The route took us up High St toward Broadford via Wandong and the
old Hume Hwy, then across to Strath Creek where we stopped for morning tea. We
were entertained by a group riding old Indian motorcycles while sipping hot
chocolate, and eating Maree’s supplied home made cake.
After our short break, we again headed off, this time in a southerly direction via
Flowerdale, following the King Parrot Creek. We all made our way around behind Mt
Disappointment, over the hill at King Lake West, and down through Whittlesea on to
Plenty road. After a short squirt, it was left into Donnybrook Rd, where we crossed
our outgoing path to end up at Monteleone’s Donnybrook cheese factory. A lot of our
trip was through the Murrindindi Shire, which was badly hit during the Black
Saturday bushfires. It was amazing how much bush has failed to re take, showing how
intense the fires must have been.
Once parked up, it was time for a good feed. The eatery attached to the cheese factory
supplied us with some nice tucker and local beverages. A pleasant afternoon was had
by all, finishing off with a splurge in the cheese shop.
The run home was easy, only being 1km from the Hume Fwy.
The run was short and sweet, and perfect for the day, allowing us to miss any
substantial rain that had formed.
Thank you to Mike and Maree for organizing a great day out.
27/06/2011
RM Auctions, Salon Privé London 23 June 2011: Review
Max Girardo hard at work. This is the 1966 Aston Martin DB6 Vantage, sold for £123,200
‘Bentley’ and ‘Aston Martin’ go together like champagne and canapés. No, hold on,
that’s not quite right, but they’re still ‘Quintessentially English’ and that was the
theme of RM’s new summer sale, held at the luxury and supercar ‘Salon Privé’
event in Syon Park, West London.
The result – a £5.1 million gross figure with a handy 77% sell-through rate – must have
been enough to get the champagne corks popping back in Ontario, with cars from Bentley
and Aston Martin leading the way.
Top selling entry was the 1929 Bentley Speed Six 'Le Mans' Style Tourer, an imposing
green metal and canvas machine with massive chromed radiator and driving lights. It sold
for £470,400. A car from a similar era (and one that might just have challenged the
Cricklewood company’s dominance of the ‘sporting saloon’ market of the time), the 1926
Rolls-Royce Phantom I Experimental Sports Tourer, also found a new owner, for
£392,000.
1961 Sunbeam Alpine Harrington Coupé: Sold for
£64,960
1962 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II Drophead Coupé: Sold
for £268,800
RUNNING AMOC September 2011 - 8 of 26

But it was a 1960s Aston Martin, the LHD 1961 DB4 Vantage Convertible once owned
by Sir Peter Ustinov, that took second spot, selling for a strong £431,200.
Altogether, RM had put on a bit of an Aston extravaganza, with 15 cars catalogued
(plus a brace of pre-War Lagondas).
All but three Astons sold, with the historically significant 1939 2-Litre 'Brooklands'
Speed Model achieving £319,200. In recent years, pre-War Astons have lagged
behind similar cars from Bugatti and Alfa Romeo so it was a pleasant change to see
some big numbers associated with a ‘Bertelli-era’ car. The 1937 Aston Martin 15/98
Roadster was bid to £85,000 yet was clearly a touch short of its reserve, the red
(these late-model, pre-War Astons do look better in black, dark blue or green)
roadster being one of the event’s few non-sellers.
1929 Bentley Speed Six 'Le Mans' Style Tourer: Sold for £470,400
The specialists present at the sale rated the ‘James Bond spec’ 1964 Aston Martin
DB5, and it duly sold for £263,200, while the attractive, matching numbers, original
Special Series 1962 Aston Martin DB4 Series IV Vantage bested it by over £10k,
finally going for £274,400 - well over its £200,000-250,000 estimate.
The prices achieved by Jaguars at the sale reflected current fashion and the rarity of
the model. So, the 'one of 36 XK150 3.8S Roadsters' (and one of 24 Special order
cars to boot, but RHD) XK sold for an impressive £201,600. Compare and contrast
this with the workmanlike (possibly a little ‘wedding car’, it could be said, in its Post
Office red and white-wall tyre configuration) 1937 Jaguar SS 2½-Litre Sports Saloon
which garnered only £28,000.
RUNNING AMOC September 2011 - 9 of 26

1992 Allard J2X Hardy Replica: Sold for £44,800 1939 Aston Martin 2-Litre 'Brooklands' Speed Model: Sold
for £319,200
The much-fancied LHD 1966 Jaguar E-type Series I 4.2 Fixed Head Coupé went for
£61,600 and its younger brother, the 1974 Jaguar E-type Series III Roadster,
£42,000.
The first lots in the sale were motorcycles. The highlights of the two-wheeled entries
were consecutive ones, the 1960 BSA Gold Star (£21,280) followed by the 1939
Brough Superior 11.50 V-Twin which sold for £36,960.
1959 Jaguar XK150 3.8S Roadster: Sold for £201,600
Elsewhere in the well-attended event, the attractive 1961 Sunbeam Alpine
Harrington Coupé (ideally qualified for the Goodwood Revival and the 2012 Le Mans
Classic) realised £64,960, the 1962 Triumph TR4 Roadster £33,600, and the 1993
Rolls-Royce Corniche IV Cabriolet £64,400.
RUNNING AMOC September 2011 - 10 of 26

1932 Rolls-Royce Phantom II Continental
Drophead Coupé: Not Sold
1955 Bentley R-Type Continental
Fastback: Sold for £358,400
One of the last lots to be offered was 155, the 1992 Allard J2X Hardy Replica. This was,
in the words of one of the many well-known members of the London car scene there for
the auction and Salon Privé, a “useful bit of kit” and it sold for £44,800.
1960 AC Aceca Bristol: Sold for £86,800 1987 Aston Martin V-8 Vantage Volante X-Pack: Sold for
£100,800
Just the thing to drive away from the Syon Park venue that enjoyed a mixture of
blazing sunshine and summer downpours. It’s not called ‘Quintessentially English’
for nothing.
RUNNING AMOC September 2011 - 11 of 26

1961 Aston Martin DB4 Vantage Convertible (front, sold for £431,200) and 1964 Aston Martin DB5 (back, sold for
£263,200)
RM Auctions' next 2011 sale, in conjunction with the Concours d’Elegance of America,
will take place at The Inn at St. John's, MI, USA on 30 July. Its big, Pebble Beach week
event will be from 19-20 August at the Portola Hotel & Spa and Monterey Conference
Center. After that, its European arm will hold the company's traditional early autumn,
London auction on 26 October at Battersea.
1967 Aston Martin DB6 Vantage Shooting Brake by
Harold Radford
For the 1960s huntin’, shootin’ and fishin’ set, a bespoke estate by Radfords was
the perfect way to access their, er... estate.
This car, available from Vantage Motorworks, North Miami, FL, was converted in
period from luxurious GT to practical load-lugger - perfect for a fast drive from
Kensington mews house to Yorkshire grouse moor.
West London-based coachbuilder Harold Radford had already completed several
DB5-based shooting brakes. When production of the DB5 stopped in 1965, the
company then took the DB6’s more spacious design and made an estate version,
cleverly retaining the newer car's vertical Kamm tail. The Aston Martin Owners Club
Register states that six Radford (and two by FLM Panelcraft, in a less easy-on-the-eye
design) conversions were made
RUNNING AMOC September 2011 - 12 of 26

It’s also left-hand drive, and finished in the attractive combination of Aubergine with
tan hide. Just the job for a trip to the Hamptons or skiing in Vail.
Ian and Kaye's run through the Dandenong Ranges
Article by Bruna Capodanno Photos by Richard Consul
What a great turnout for Kaye and Ian’s first run with the Aston Club to the
Dandenong’s. A total of 14 cars and 25 members arrived at the route 26 on the
Burwood Highway with some most welcome new comers and their dazzling cars as
well as a couple of non AM vehicles turning up (Ahumm!!). The very chlorophyll
and very vintage BMW, belonging to Charles being quite appropriate for the
discovery run.
The halfway morning tea stop – always welcomed and deserved by all, was in the
little town of Gembrook where tiny cottages and neat leafy gardens lay in the autumn
mist, then onto Monbulk, Kallista and Sassafras where a meandering, lush drive lay
ahead by the expert navigation of Ian and Kaye. We caught glimpses of lamas, geese
and hordes of newly hatched ducklings, as well as very sturdy Australia’s best cattle –
sights always appreciated by the very urban members.
Everywhere gargantuan ferns and the huge Mountain Ash with their grey trunks
stretched sky high. Undiscovered routes opened their ways via dizzying turns
(although I’m sure we went around here three times!!), as lack of or too much oxygen
made our heads turn….Are we in the Daintree forest territory up in the North, or
simply discovering one of Victoria’s natural treasures as we’ve never seen it before?
RUNNING AMOC September 2011 - 15 of 26

A beautifully perched Restaurant and a big front parking awaited after a long and
deserved drive although some arrived late, some quite late, and one gentleman
worryingly late…(those steep valleys are so slippery, should we send out a search?).
But as true weathered navigators, some AMOC drivers like to open their motors and
get there first at worrying speeds while others like to take their time and cajole their
engines. Why speed after all when such a paradisical scenery is offered?
When everyone arrived we exchanged notes on the navigational skills of our comembers,
discussing the intricate itinery among us. The day was perfect and we
thoroughly enjoyed the discovery.
RUNNING AMOC September 2011 - 17 of 26

I wonder if servicing stopped at Aston Martin Lagonda because of cost? In May 1989,
the invoice reports renewing the rear cigar lighter. Breakdown of parts supplied shows
1 cigar lighter, cost 30.47 GBP plus 15%VAT!
September 2002 Rikki Cann carried out extensive repairs to sills, jacking points and
rear suspension pickups. Bodywork was repaired around front and rear window
openings, and the car was repainted, though not to bare metal. Total cost of this work
in 2002 was over 10,000 GBP. Mileage at this time was 57765.
Although staying with the same owner until Oc27-20-20 rather strangely, having
spent all that money, since then the car has barely been used, having covered only
2314 miles for a total of 60079 in the last 9 years, and only 337 since its MOT 16-3-
07. One year 09-10, it traveled as few as 4 miles according to the MOT tests!
Some of you already know, but over the last year or two another interesting car
project has been taking shape, and finally arrived late last week.
For years I’ve had a sports car of one type or another. A 100-4 Healey that was
described as a “trailer load of rusty metal”, a V6 Capri, a succession of Bolwell’s,
Mk7’s and a Nagari, a Buchanan, that now appears to have been one of the factory
race cars, amongst others.
RUNNING AMOC September 2011 - 18 of 26

All of these have at some level disappointed and, in many ways have been a step
towards something that I have really wanted for 20+ years.
I’ve always wanted an Aston Martin.
For years as kids, Marcus (my brother) and I talked about cars. Obviously James
Bond was a hero, and late night reruns of Goldfinger probably sewed the seed, but
always an Aston Martin was the pinnacle for us both.
Later on, reading second hand UK import magazines, we would marvel at the
exclusivity, luxury, power and frightening cost of an Aston Martin, and who wouldn’t
want a car that could actually use most of the 200MPH speedo.
I can recall reading an article on Aston Martin that interviewed the then Director /
Owner, Victor Gauntlet. It was in 1984 and in 70 years, Aston Martin had just built
their 10,000 th car. The comment was also made, that in Detroit they were building
10,000 cars in an hour! An Aston was clearly the car for me.
Although the Bond DB5 connection had probably got me started, it was the then
current (1984) V8’s that really caught my eye.
25 years later, and at the Phillip Island Historics two years ago, there were a couple of
Aston Martin Club V8’s in the car park.
I was there with Dad and said that if there was ever going to be a car for me then it
was one of these. Slowly I did the sums and realized it wasn’t entirely impractical,
though I didn’t need much convincing. The Nagari had been sold (so the Sports Car
Money was safely in the bank!) and after all, at least in an Aston Martin V8, the
whole family could travel in it!
Like most of you I always have my favorite car sales sites and a few favorites to
punch in. Aston Martin, Bolwell, Austin Healey, Iso, Jensen, Kit Car and even
Plymouth (Don’t ask!).
All of a sudden the supply seemed to disappear overnight, although I suspect that in
reality there were never many for sale in Australia.
I contacted Paul Sabine at Brooklands and he showed me a Series 3 that he had, but I
explained that I was after something a little better, even if it cost a bit more.
After fortnightly phone calls to Paul Sabine he finally told me of a series 4 Oscar
India he had bought in the UK that was on its way over. I saw the photos, and was
quietly keen.
The Series 4 Oscar India (October Introduction) cars were significantly improved
over the earlier cars that I had initially looked at.
They featured a revised interior with walnut timber inserts and leather headlining (It
took the leather from 9 hides to trim an Oscar India!) as well as an integral rear
spoiler and lower, closed opening bonnet bulge.
Initially I thought that one of these more highly appointed cars would be beyond my
reach, but the car finally arrived in Australia and I was hooked. It would be a little (!)
more expensive than the series 3, but to me the improvements were well worth it.
I test drove the car, after waiting for what seemed like months, and wasn’t
disappointed, which was a relief! The car upheld all of my Aston Martin expectations,
but I was ultimately to reject it because again I thought that maybe I could perhaps do
a little better.
By this time I had looked at all of the cars available in Australia (all of 2 in 18
months) and had come to the conclusion that I may have to look further to the UK.
I approached The Healey Factory who said that they would help with shipping a car
here, and as I had no experience it was a great help, as it opened a whole new, all be it
small market.
I soon found a car I really liked and set the wheels in motion.
The color and interior were all good, I particularly like the contrasting green piping on
the seats, and the car had an interesting history file that demonstrated a lot of car in its
previous owners and was a lot lower mileage than the car I had previously tested.
The car was inspected by a very reputable Aston specialist (check out Richard
Williams Aston on Google) and given the all clear. I then parted with the money. You
can imagine how nerve wracking that is, sending money half way around the world, to
a guy you have only contacted by email and a few phone conversations, for a car that
you haven’t even seen. Then with Healey Factory help the car was put in a container
to sail to Melbourne.
After just over six weeks from leaving the UK, the phone call came from Rob
Rowland to say the car was here. I nervously asked how it looked, “like a green
Aston”, was the short reply.
I went after work for a quick look and was very happy. The color and overall
condition was better than I had hoped for. I picked the car up on Saturday 25-6 and
nervously drove home and checked all of the lights etc and arranged for a safety
inspection for Monday, to put the car on Historic Plates. It passed no problem, so the
next day, Tuesday 28-6 I went to Vic Roads with the necessary paperwork, and
handed over $114, and picked up my new 90 day Historic club plates!
Even Rob was impressed, a new record to get a car from the container and onto the
road.
So far, I’m not at all disappointed. There are a few little things to take car of, but they
can be done once I get it organised onto a regular servicing plan.
Incidentally, I have been in touch with the Aston Martin Owners Club forum, and it
actually looks like my car is one of two cars that were originally ordered new by
Victor Gauntlets. The two cars had consecutive plates and the other one was a famous
car used in many road tests at the time.
I hope to be contacted by Victor Gauntlets son, regarding the car!
Hope to have many years of pleasant motoring ahead!
LEXUS DAMAGE
A very successful attorney parked his brand new Lexus in front of his office, ready to
show it off to his colleagues. As he was getting out, a truck came along too closely
and completely tore off the driver’s door.
Fortunately, a cop in a police car was close enough to see the accident and pulled up
behind the Lexus with his lights flashing.
Before the cop had a chance to ask any questions, the attorney started screaming
hysterically about how his Lexus, which he had just purchased the day before, was
completely ruined and would never be the same, no matter how any car body shop
tried to make it new again.
After the lawyer finally wound down from his rant, the cop shook his head in
disbelief. “I can’t believe how materialistic you lawyers are,” he said. “You are so
focused on your possessions that you neglect the most important things in life.”
“How can you say such a thing?” asked the lawyer.
The cop replied, “Don’t you even realize that your left arm is missing? It was severed
when the truck hit you!”
“OH MY GOD!!!” screamed the lawyer.
“My Rolex!”
