n Aug. 26, 2004, College Sports
Television (CSTV) and the Mountain
West Conference announced a partnership that
revolutionized the college sports landscape.
The landmark agreement was the first NCAA
Division I football and men’s basketball
conference-wide deal for CSTV.
The new television model gave CSTV – the fastestgrowing
independent cable network – exclusive rights
to all conference events, including cable and satellite
television coverage, national over-the-air and satellite
radio, video-on-demand and online broadcast rights.
Since the original announcement, a succession
of events have occurred to improve the partnership.
Among them: the CBS purchase of CSTV and the
merger with Comcast SportsNet to form the centerpiece
of the relationship – The Mtn. (MountainWest Sports
Network). The Mtn. became the first sports network
dedicated to a single collegiate athletic conference 24
hours-a-day, 7 days-a-week, 365 days-a-year.
The relationship with Comcast also delivered a
new national broadcast partner in VERSUS. A wholly
owned company of Comcast Corporation, VERSUS is
distributed via cable systems and satellite operators
throughout the United States and is currently seen
in over 72 million homes. The MWC was the first
exclusive college programming provider for VERSUS,
which is the national cable home of the National
Hockey League (NHL) and the Stanley Cup Playoffs,
as well as events like the Tour de France, the America’s
Cup, the Dakar Rally, the Professional Bull Riders
(PBR), Professional Boxing, the Boston Marathon and
the Davis Cup.
CSTV is a 24-hour college sports network owned
by CBS Corporation. As the leading digital sports
media company, CSTV connects more fans to more
college sports than any other company. CSTV is
available to more than 65 million homes nationwide
and has agreements with Adelphia, Charter, Comcast,
Cox, DirecTV, Dish Networks and Time Warner Cable.
CSTV televises hundreds of live events each year,
including 35 men’s and women’s sports from virtually
every major conference. CSTV is also a multi-platform
provider. CSTV.com and its network of nearly 215
official athletic sites, along with CSTV All Access and
its broadband services, provide live audio and video
of more than 10,000 events annually from many of the
nation’s top athletic programs.
The Mtn., as the first regional network dedicated
to a college athletic conference, provides sports fans
blanket coverage of MWC athletics. The Mtn.’s team
of talent – which consists of play-by-by announcers,
analysts, sideline reporters and in-studio anchors
– allows fans to enjoy programming and commentary
not previously available. With a “fans first” focus,
CSTV/Comcast has assured that MWC constituents
will see more MWC sports, in more media platforms,
than ever before.
