Estimate 500.00 - 700.00 Hammer Price: 1,000.00 82 "Pedestrian Hobbyhorse" print Print: "Pedestrian Hobbyhorse" inscribed "No. 38 of R. Ackermann's Repository of Arts Pub. Feb. 1819", site 8 1/2" x 7", image creased. Estimate 50.00 - 75.00 Hammer Price: 175.00 82a HOBBY HORSE Print HOBBY HORSE Print. This is the only known Hobby Horse print published in America. The basis for the image was from the earliest known English Hobby Horse print featured in Ackerman’s Repository of Arts dated 1st February 1819. The American print was copied as a copper etching and inset into “The Analectic Magazine, No. 78 Vol. XII, June 1819”. The paper is approximately 8-5/8” x 5-1/4”. The image is 5” x 7”. It was published in Philadelphia by M. Thomas, printed by James Maxwell and engraved by E. W. Clay of New York. Other images of Hobby Horses are known in magazines and newspapers in articles or advertisements but no other print was published in the USA. It would have been from an image such as this that a Hobby Horse would have been conceived and then crafted in Copake Auction Inc. LOT # America. Note the fine lines of the backbone in the print which do not exist in actual Hobby Horses produced in England, Germany, France, Italy etc. This print was copied in the USA from the original Ackerman example (LOT #82) Very Good Condition. Estimate 400.00 - 600.00 Hammer Price: 325.00 83 American made Hobby Horse This is the only AMERICAN-MADE Hobby Horse known to exist at this time. It is a fact that Hobby Horses were constructed in the United States. The Smithsonian Institution lacks an example of one, nor is any example recorded in the G. Donald Adams book, Collecting & Restoring Antique Bicycles. Virtually every American-made velocipede was unique unto itself. Images for designs were taken from Magazines (e.g. Analectic Magazine of June, 1819) and various illustrated Newspaper Articles and Advertisements which were circulated throughout the country (e.g. Poulson's American Daily Advertiser of Feb. 8, 1819, Columbia Register of July 10, 1819, New England Galaxy of May 28, 1819 , The New England Palladium and Commercial Examiner of May 21, 1819). American Hobby Horses were not developed over an extended period of time or in large quantities as were their European counterparts. Baron Von Drais (Germany) and Dennis Johnson (England) had a large market and the opportunity to refine their products. In the USA they had to be individually created. Common to all Hobby Horses were steel front forks; however, unique features were developed in models originating in the USA. This example was designed with a thinner backbone which was reinforced with channeled steel. A tubular handlebar was made to take a set screw. American ingenuity enhanced this velocipede with high quality wheels having an iron end cap on each side of each wheel. From the Fall, 1996, issue of Tandem Magazine, I was able to reconstruct some of this particular velocipede's history. This Hobby Horse was acquired by an antique dealer in Sonora, California, as part of a collection from a movie studio. The Hobby Horse Page: 12
