It was wrong of the Church to invest infallibility in a mortal breath. But she was beginning to understand things also from the perspective of her father and her brother. It was true that her husband, Alfonso, had tried to kill Cesare. It was also true that Alfonso was intensely jealous of Cesare, because of the unbreakable bond of incestuous love between brother and sister. It was an incestuous relationship that her father had orchestrated, specifically to cement the bond within the Vatican B<strong>org</strong>ia family. But that bond is strained, if not totally broken, by the murder of Alfonso. Alexander had invited Lucrezia to the Vatican from Nepi, to see how she had healed after her protracted voluntary exile to her palace, to stay away from the Pope and Cesare. She had refused to see many couriers that her father had sent earlier, and for more than a year refused to have anything to do with any member of her family. Her love for her brother, Cesare, turned to an intense hatred. She could not imagine how she had
allowed such a sinful person to love her, and she loathed herself for once loving him. But after many sleepless nights, she came to the conclusion that Cesare had no option but to defend himself from her husband, Alfonso. Would she have been able to live with Alfonso, if her husband had succeeded in killing her brother? The entire event made her unable to think: weak and dejected, all she could do was feed the tangle of confusion at the back of her mind. She began to imagine that Pope Alexander was going through similarly confusing thoughts. She felt desire for her father for a moment. It was at that moment that she was told that the Pope had sent a messenger to her from Pope. At first she said that she did not receive any visitors and was still mourning the death of her husband. But later she relented and asked the messenger to be brought in to see her. The messenger simply said that the Pope Alexander had a surprise present for Lucrezia, and that she should come immediately. She returned word that she would arrive in Rome as soon as possible. The Pope was overjoyed, and threw a party to welcome her. After the party, the Pope led her into the private chapel so that both of them could see the African eunuch at the same time. The Pope was closely watching her daughter especially to see how she would react to the eunuch. He wondered if the dark sheen of his skin would revolt her. Once she got over the initial shock of seeing a skin color that was so dark, she began to find the pigmentation intriguing. To enjoy the contrast of their skins, she placed her wrist next to hers. “It has been a long day, Lucrezia.
