progression and their blocking agents.<br />

(2). Identification of cancer stem cells of B cell lymphoma, colorectal, bladder, renal cell, and<br />

esophageal cancers; their specific biomarkers.<br />

(3). Elucidating the cancer-fostering microenvironment support for cancer stem cell in therapy<br />

OCI-CLL-01, Co PI: A trial that obtains, through one blood draw, chronic lymphocytic<br />

leukemia and lymphoma cells to confirm that BAFF (B-cell activation factor) and related<br />

proteins are found in multiple myeloma and B-cell chronic lymphoytic leukemia. The study is<br />

intended to pave the way for treatments that may combat B-cell CLL by impeding the effect of<br />

these proteins.<br />

2003.113.A OCI- Pro00001108, Co PI: A study that collects lymphoma cells and grows the<br />

cells in culture for the purpose of identifying molecules in these cells that contribute to their<br />

development. The study is expected to be valuable in the development of drugs to inhibit the<br />

growth and survival of lymphoma cells.<br />

2009.037.A OCI- Pro00004172, Understanding the microenvironment of stem cells in colon<br />

cancer. Co PI: A study that collects colon rectal cancer biopsy samples in order to identify colon<br />

cancer stem cell biomarkers and the effects of lymph node stromal cells in cancer recurrence;<br />

and collect clinical history of colon cancer patients in order to prospectively and retrospectively<br />

analyze the correlation between cancer stem cell expression and disease outcomes for the<br />

purpose of identifying molecules in these cells that contribute to their development. The study is<br />

expected to be valuable in the development of drugs to inhibit the growth and survival of drug<br />

resistant cancer cells.<br />

2010.108.A OCI- Pro00005560, Colorectal cancer tumor markers and the relationship to<br />

recurrence and outcomes. Co PI: A study that retrospectively look at biomarkers in tissue<br />

samples for patients who have had pathologically stage 2 or 3 colorectal cancer and determine if<br />

there is a correlation to 5 year recurrence rates and outcomes.<br />
