NOBLE CALEDONIA

London Festival Opera performing at Ca Rezzonico in Venice

Dear Traveller
If like me your passions are music, history and gardens then I trust you will find something of interest on the following
pages. I am very fortunate that I do get to travel to some of the loveliest places and often my first thoughts on arriving at
somewhere new to me is how can we create something special. Music is always top of my list as I have no doubt that by
including music in the itinerary we do make any trip much more enjoyable and memorable.
Some places are obvious such as Venice, the Danube, the Rhone and Lake Como where we have offered music trips with our
friends at the London Festival Opera for a number of years. Others are less obvious. On a recent trip to Dubrovnik I was staying
at the Hotel Villa Argentina which has a splendid location across the bay from Dubrovnik old town and immediately it became
apparent that by adding both music and some botanical visits we would add enormously to an already rich programme.
On some trips we are able to include visits to iconic music venues such as the Statsopera in Vienna or the grand opera
houses of Budapest, Dresden and Stockholm etc, but on the majority of trips we are responsible for providing the music.
Working closely with the London Festival Opera we decide on suitable music programmes for each destination and
because the performers travel and stay with our party, a unique atmosphere is created. Some travellers enjoy a sneak
preview by attending rehearsals and it has been known on occasions that a small chorus has been formed from the party.
So, if you have not yet travelled on one of our varied music trips I would urge you to consider doing so. Our approach is
unique and the rather startling demand we are now receiving proves that our approach of combining suitable
destinations with a programme of lecture led trips does have great appeal. Whether, you are floating down one of
Europe’s great rivers or staying in a comfortable hotel in a special setting, our mix of music, history and on some trips
visits to great gardens is what we believe makes for a truly memorable trip.
Yours truly
Andrew Cochrane, Managing Director
inspired to find repertoire that is ideally suited to the superb settings
hotel stays in Dubrovnik and Seville, river cruises along the Elbe
aboard delightful and intimate river vessels and a journey under sail
in the Baltic aboard the splendid sailing ship Sea Cloud II.
Our programmes in 2013 will include celebrated arias and ensemble
Bellini, Verdi, Bizet, Puccini in addition to the lighter repertoire of
Offenbach, Strauss, Lehár, Gilbert & Sullivan and hits from the musicals of
We are always delighted to see familiar faces and recognise names on
the passenger list, but we also look forward to the prospect of welcoming
new passengers who may not have enjoyed the unique experience that
SEVEN NIGHTS IN SEVILLE STAYING
ABOARD THE MS BELLE DE CADIX
WITH OLGA STONE & CESAR PEREZ
Join us as we discover the beauty and
wonders of Andalucia, a captivating region
and one of the most attractive areas within
the Mediterranean due to its climate, history
and culture. The region has an intriguing past
and was conquered by Phoenicians, Greeks,
Carthaginians and Romans, later by Vandals
and Suevians, before the Arabs occupied the
region for five centuries.
Our base while we explore the region is the
MS Belle de Cadix which will be moored in the
fascinating city of Seville, the city of Carmen,
Don Juan and Figaro. Further afield we will
visit other Andalucian gems; the “Pueblos
Blancos”, including the romantic town of
Ronda. There will also be a chance to visit
Granada, home to the Alhambra Palace with
its ornate architecture and beauty, and
Cordoba with its Great Mosque.
Using the vessel as our base also allows us
to offer such a tour at less than half the cost
than if we were based in a good centrally
located hotel. Although the vessel
accommodates up to 178 passengers, we are
limiting numbers for this tour to 120 due to
the size of some of the venues we will be
visiting. We have purposely planned our trip
early and late in the year to avoid the tourist
high season months when the crowds of day
trippers.
CESAR PEREZ
We are delighted that our ever popular and
long standing Cruise Director from the MS
Johann Strauss, Cesar Perez will be joining us
onboard the Belle de Cadix. A native of the
city of Seville, Cesar’s local- knowledge will
enhance our visit tremendously.
Music & Art in Andalucia
Alhambra, Grenada
8th to 15th February
& 29th November to 6th
December 2013
The Itinerary
Day 1 London Gatwick or London City to Seville. Fly to Seville with Easyjet or to
Malaga with British Airways. On arrival transfer to the MS Belle de Cadix and embark
for your seven night stay. Enjoy welcome drinks and dinner this evening.
Day 2 Seville: Old City. Our morning excursion “the myths of Carmen and Don
Giovanni”, includes a visit to the bullring and the Hospital de la Caridad with
extraordinary paintings from famous Sevillian artists (Murillo, Valdes Leal, Pedro
Roldan) and whose founder Miguel de Mañara has been considered the
source of inspiration for the myth around Don Juan for a long period of time.
Our tour ends with a visit to the Santa Cruz Quarter with its cramped streets,
flowered balconies, richly decorated facades, and hidden patios. Return to the
ship for lunch and afternoon at leisure. This evening London Festival Opera will
perform a programme which will include highlights from Bizet’s ‘Carmen’.
Day 3 Ronda & Pueblos Blancos. The brilliantly whitewashed villages and
towns of inland Andalucia are called Pueblos Blancos. These towns and
villages dot the steep slopes of the mountains. Many have "de la Frontera" as
part of their name, an ancient reference to the frontier towns that formed a
boundary between Christian-held territories and Muslim towns and villages
during the Middle Ages. We take a scenic drive through this region to Ronda,
a picturesque town of Celtic origin. With the Cathedral (Roman, Arabic and
Gothic styles), the Old Quarter, the Bull Ring (oldest one in Spain) and the
magnificent Tajo Gorge, Ronda is both romantic and fascinating. We will
have lunch in a local restaurant followed by some free time before departing.
On our journey back to Seville we will make a photostop at Zahara de la
Sierra, one of the classic ‘white villages’ with its spotless white houses and
crumbling castle, all overlooking a turquoise lake. After dinner this evening
there will be a flamenco performance on board by local artists.
Day 4 Seville: The Alcazar & Cathedral. After breakfast we depart for our
tour to see the exotic Royal Alcazar, with its delightful terraced garden. The
Reales Alcazares consists of a series of smaller palaces built by the kings of
Seville around and on top of the ruins of King Al-Mutamid’s Moorish palace.
Continue on to visit the Cathedral, reputed to be the largest Gothic style
church in the world. Also see Seville’s symbol, the Giralda Tower. Return to
the ship for a late lunch. Afternoon at leisure and this evening enjoy an after
dinner performance by London Festival Opera.
Day 5 Romantic Seville & Gala Night. During today’s morning excursion you
will discover “Romantic Seville”. We will first visit Casa Pilatos. The construction
of this palace house, which serves as the permanent residence of the Dukes of
Medinaceli, began between the end of the 15th and the beginning of the 16th
century. It is considered the prototype of the Andalucian palace and after the
Royal Alcazar, this is the most splendid Palace that you can visit in Seville. It is
not only popular because of its combination of Spanish Mudejar, Gothic and
Italian Renaissance style, but also for its Roman antiquities, its canvases and
furniture of various epochs. Afterwards we will walk to the Palace of the
Countess of Lebrija, also known as Palacio de la Condesa de Lebrija which is
considered the “best paved house-palace in Europe” owing to its collection of
Roman mosaics, which pave practically the whole of the ground floor. There

will be a private guided tour of the upper floor,
which, until a few years ago, was the residence
of the Countess and her descendants.
Return to the ship for lunch and afternoon at
leisure. In the evening London Festival Opera
will perform ‘A Spanish Soirée’ of celebrated
opera and song at the splendid hotel Alfonso
XIII, one of the most famous luxury hotels of
Seville since 1929, year of the Iberoamerican
exhibition. After a cocktail in the galleries and
inner courtyard, a Gala Dinner is served in the
majestic Royal Dining Room.
Day 6 Seville. Today will be at leisure, a chance
for you to shop, relax or sightsee
independently. There will also be a choice of Inside the Royal Alcazar in Seville
two full day optional excursions today. Select from the world renowned
Alhambra Palace and Generalife in Granada (a long but rewarding day), or
Cordoba, considered to be the most beautiful medieval city in Spain.
Day 7 Seville: Museo de Bellas Artes. This morning we visit the Museo de Bellas
Artes, one of the most important art museums in Spain after El Prado in Madrid.
The works of renowned painters such as Murillo, El Greco, and Velazquez are
displayed here. Return to the ship for lunch and your final afternoon is at leisure.
This evening there will be a Farewell Drinks and Dinner followed by an ‘Opera
Gala Night’ performed in costume by London Festival Opera.
Day 8 Seville to London Gatwick or London City. Disembark this morning
and transfer to either Seville or Malaga airport for the return scheduled flight
to London.
from our delightful lake-side base at the Grand
Hotel Menaggio. During our week’s stay we will
visit some of the finest gardens and villas and
be joined by London Festival Opera who will
perform some marvellous opera in wonderful
settings.
Italy has more than its fair share of beautiful
places, but few would argue that the lakes that
nestle in the foothills of the Italian Alps are one
of its finest assets. The images stay with you
forever. The early mist rising off the lake, church
bells resonating off the water, flower-filled
gardens reflected in the still, deep waters and
numerous craft going about their business,
crisscrossing the lake.
Our programme will include comprehensive
sightseeing excursions, and some free time to
relax and enjoy the lovely facilities of the hotel and
appreciate the dramatic scenery of Lake Como.
We will be joined by horticultural expert
Michael Michieli, who will provide talks and
briefings during the week and accompany us on
excursions.
A WEEK OF MUSIC, HISTORY
& CULTURE IN ONE OF THE MOST
Seville, the birthplace of flamenco, has been
inspiration for musicians and composers for
centuries. There are close to 30 operas,
symphonies and music pieces that have been
written here and Sevillians are proud of this
heritage. Added to this, the city boasts some
of the most beautiful architecture in the
world from palaces, to private casas. It
therefore seemed a perfect destination to
once again unite our good friends and
outstanding performers, London Festival
Opera to offer you a week of exploration,
music and relaxation. We have planned a
week of private concerts in magical settings,
sumptuous meals and cocktail receptions,
along with explorations of the Moorish
architecture that the region is famed for.
BEAUTIFUL CITIES IN SPAIN
30th April to 7th May 2013
Gardens of the Reales Alcazares
Music in Seville
The Itinerary
Day 1 London Gatwick to Seville. Fly by
scheduled flight to Malaga. On arrival transfer
to Seville (approximately 2 ½ hours) and
check-in to the Hotel Vincci La Rabida for your
seven night stay.
Day 2 Seville – The Alcazar & Christian
Cathedral. Today we will see Seville’s two
greatest monuments, the Muslim Alcazar with
its exotic terraced garden and the Christian
Cathedral, reputed to be the largest Gothic
Mezquita Cathedral interior, Cordoba
style church in the world. Even nowadays,
these buildings are used as a Royal Residence by King Juan Carlos whenever
he stays in Seville. This evening there will be a private cocktail reception and
dinner at Casa Salinas whilst we enjoy ‘A Night at the Opera’ performance by
London Festival Opera, which will include operas associated with Seville
such as Mozart’s ‘Don Giovanni’ and Rossini’s ‘The Barber of Seville’.
Day 3 Jerez. Today we enjoy a full day excursion to Jerez with lunch. This
morning we will visit the Royal Andalucian School of Equestrian Art, a centre
for training of dressage riders and technical personnel and the selection of
pure Spanish thoroughbreds for breeding. We will be accompanied by a
guide to see the palace exterior, the stables, the Tack Room museum and
the saddlery, followed by a show in the arena. Enjoy lunch at Restaurant
Trafalgar. We will spend the afternoon at one of the most famous Sherry
wine cellars, ‘Bodegas de Gonzalez Byass’. Here we will learn about the
history and complex procedure of Sherry wine making.
Day 4 Carmen’s Seville. Our morning excursion is themed on one of the
most popular operas of all time, ‘Carmen’, the story of which is set in Seville.
A gypsy woman from Triana was crossing the bridge every day over the large
Guadalquivir River to reach the tobacco factory. We will understand the
strong feelings which existed between Don José and Carmen: passion, love
and hate until the tragic end of the story in the bullfighting arena. This
magnificent bullring is considered to be one of the finest in Spain and is one
of the oldest and most important in the world. Enjoy a free afternoon, before
an evening cocktail reception with a wide selection of canapes in the private
Casa Bailen. This stunning 17th century palace, which has been elegantly
restored, belongs to the marquis of Nervion. London Festival Opera will
perform a highlight performance of Bizet’s ‘Carmen’.
Day 5 Cordoba. Our full day excursion will take us to Cordoba; the city was
both the Roman and the Moorish capital of Spain, and its Old town,
clustered around its famous mosque (Mezquita), remains one of the best
examples of Moorish heritage in Andalusia. We will start our tour crossing
the Roman bridge and visit the Mezquita-Cathedral. It was built between the
8th and 10th centuries and is one of the earliest and most breathtakingly

eautiful examples of Spanish Islamic
architecture. After our visit we will take a walk
through the fascinating Jewish Quarter. Lunch
will be taken at Almudaina Restaurant.
Day 6 Seville. The day is free for you to explore
independently. An optional horse and carriage
panoramic tour will be available for you to take
in more of the city’s sights in comfort. The tour
will take you past many monuments and
squares and into Seville’s ‘central park’, Maria
Luisa with its exotic gardens and fountains. We
will stop at Plaza de España and visit this
emblematic monument with our guide. This
evening we have arranged a private flamenco
performance at Casa de la Memoria. While it is Flamenco at Casa de la Memoria
often difficult to see good flamenco in Seville, the Casa de la Memoria
Al-Andalus has recently broken new ground in presenting a show at a splendid
mansion for an educated public. The artists are usually young talents who have
often won first prizes in the most prestigious flamenco competitions of Spain.
Day 7 Seville. Another day at leisure or alternatively join the optional morning
excursion to the Metropol Parasol, a wooden building situated in La
Encarnación square, in the old quarter of Seville. Designed by the German
architect, Jürgen Mayer-Hermann and completed in April 2011, it is claimed to
be the largest wooden structure in the world. There are four levels to explore:
the underground level houses the Antiquarium, where Roman and Moorish
remains discovered on-site are displayed, level 1 is the Central Market and
levels 2 and 3 are panoramic terraces offering some of the best views of the
city centre. This evening there will be a private cocktail reception and Gala
dinner at Palacio de Lebrija, considered the “best paved house-palace in
Europe” owing to its collection of roman mosaics, which pave practically the
whole of the ground floor. There will be a private guided tour of the upper
floor, which, until a few years ago, was the residence of the Countess and her
descendents. Today it is filled with ornaments, furniture and artwork from all
over the world. London Festival Opera will perform an ‘Opera Gala Night’ in
period costume, featuring the works of Verdi, Offenbach, Gounod and Puccini.
scheduled flight to London.
A SEVEN NIGHT STAY AT THE
FIVE-STAR MASSERIA TORRE
COCCARO OR MASSERIA TORRE
MAIZZA IN PUGLIA
WITH ROGER PREECE
Puglia, at the heel of Italy’s boot, is a region of
sun-bleached landscapes, transparent waters,
silver olive groves and picturesque villages.
Often referred to as ‘the garden of Italy’, the
region is famous for its fertile land producing
some of the most intensely flavoured olives,
and consequently olive oil, much of Europe’s
pasta, fruit and vegetable in abundance, and of
course full bodied wines. Nobody enjoys the
finer things in life like the southern Italians, and
on our seven night escorted visit to the region
we will embrace the Italian outlook and enjoy
great food, sip delicious wines and enjoy
first-quality musical performances by London
Festival Opera who will be joining us for the
duration of our trip. Performing in traditional
dress and in charming settings, London Festival
Opera will present an array of Italian classics by
the likes of Verdi and Puccini bringing a taste of
19th century’s most influential music to our
historic setting.
Puglia’s history has been a turbulent one, it
was held by the Romans, Goths, Lombards,
Byzantines, Normans, Turks, Venetians and
French; the region only joined Italy in 1861 with
the fall of the Two Sicilies. This unstable past
has contributed to stunning and unique
architecture within the region which we will
explore on our daily excursions. We visit the
trulli of Alberbello, the breathtaking Baroque
Basilica di Santa Croce in Lecce and charming
Baroque town of Martina Franca to name but a
few highlights of our itinerary. Each evening
you will return to the comfort of your five star
hotel to enjoy its beautiful gardens and relax in
your elegant accommodation.
Viva Verdi e Vino
The Itinerary
Day 1 London to Bari. Fly by scheduled indirect flight to Bari and transfer to
your five-star hotel.
Day 2 Valle d’Itria. Our morning tour will be dedicated to Ostuni, also referred to
as “the white town” for the almost blinding sunlight reflecting on the walls of its
whitewashed dwellings. Ostuni has a privileged position, as it was built on three
hills: from the top of the town guests can enjoy a stunning view of the Adriatic
coast from which Ostuni is separated by an ocean of centuries-old olive trees. A
pleasant walk through the narrow and picturesque streets of the old town will
lead guests to the impressive cathedral, a beautiful example of Apulian
Romanesque style. We will then head to “Masseria Brancati”, a typical Apulian
fortified farm-house of the 15th century. Here we will visit the olive-grove, the
underground oil-mill that probably dates back to Roman times, the Medieval
part of the estate, the little private church, and the museum dedicated to folk
traditions. At the end of the tour of the masseria we will enjoy an olive-oil tasting
based on 3 different kinds of organic olive oil with Apulian bakery products and
local wine. Enjoy an afternoon at leisure at the hotel before an evening
performance by London Festival Opera in the hotel’s atmospheric, tastefully
converted, historic “Frantoio” which was used centuries ago for pressing olives.
Day 3 Martina Franca and Polignano. Today we visit Martina Franca, a charming
small Baroque town situated in the Itria Valley. It is famous for its Baroque and
Rococo’ palaces which, thanks to their position within the narrow medieval
streets, help to create a spectacular theatrical effect. We continue to the coast to
the beautifully preserved, coastal chalk-white houses of Polignano al Mare, a
small but vibrant fishing village at the peak of a rocky promontory. Here we can
savour a taste of the fresh local seafood. Return to the hotel after lunch.
Day 4 Masseria Torre Coccaro. Enjoy a day at leisure or join the Torre
Coccaro kitchen team to source produce for today’s lunch. Our optional
cooking lesson will give insight into the traditional recipes, fresh ingredients
and preparation techniques that make Southern Italy world renowned for its
cuisine. This evening we will enjoy a performance by London Festival Opera
at Masseria Torre Maizza.
Day 5 Lecce. Today we visit Lecce, often referred to as “The Florence of the
South”. Its compact, meandering old town is packed with stunning Baroque
artistry and adorned with endless intricate stone carvings. Highlights include
Piazza Sant’Oronzo where the 2nd century A.D. Colonna Romana sits and the
remains of the Roman amphitheatre from the 1st century B.C. lies. The Basilica
di Santa Croce is one of Lecce’s most celebrated Baroque buildings. The Lecce
Cathedral and the church of the Theatines are also stunning pieces of religious
architecture. After our morning here we will continue to Salice Salentino for a
visit to “Leone de Castris” . Here we will enjoy some wine tasting and lunch.
There will also be the chance to explore the winery and museum. “Leone de
Castris” is one of the most ancient wineries in Apulia, founded in 1665. It was
the first winery to bottle rosé wine in Italy in 1943, known all over the world as
the famous “Five Roses”. Inside the recently-opened wine museum it is
possible to admire ancient bottles of wine as well as the beer bottles of the
American soldiers used after the Second World War to bottle wine.

Day 6 Alberobello. This morning we visit
the UNESCO World Heritage site of
Alberobello to explore the collection of
over 1000 traditional limestone dwellings
known as trulli. Allegedly, the domelike
structures were introduced in the 16th
century when the King of Naples
demanded that a royal tax was paid on
the housing in the region governed by
the Acquaviva family. In order to evade
paying taxes, farmers began to construct
The Roman amphitheatre, Lecce
mortar free dwellings, the trullo, as they
could be dismantled easily if the need should arise. We then visit "Cantina
Albea" and its wine museum which hosts pictures and old instruments used
in the past for the production of wine. We will enjoy a wine tasting with
Apulian pretzels.
Day 7 Monopoli. Our morning tour will take us to Monopoli. On foot we will
explore the historical city centre which will bewitch you thanks to its
picturesque medieval cobblestone alleys, numerous churches, the Aragonese
ancient walls and the impressive castle facing the sea. For our final evening in
this beautiful part of Italy we will visit the Masseria il Frantoio near Ostuni. A
charming 19th century country farm which offers its guests the wholesome
products of its organic farm. A tour of the grounds and rooms of the private
manor will be followed by dinner and a final concert by London Festival Opera.
the ancestral home of Daniel O’Connell. The house is a museum
commemorating one of Ireland’s leading historical figures. In the afternoon a
bus transfer will be provided to the local town of Kenmare for time to
explore and shop at leisure.
Day 4 Garnish Island & Bantry House. Drive over the mountains to Bantry
Bay on a full day excursion that will include a morning visit to Garnish Island
and the beautiful Ilnacullin Gardens. These remarkable gardens owe their
existence to the creative partnership, some seventy years ago of Anna Bryce,
then owner of the island and Harold Peto, architect and garden designer.
The sheltered position and Gulf Stream is favourable to the growth of
ornamental plants, many normally only found in sub-tropical or
Mediterranean climates. Continue to Bantry House, overlooking Bantry Bay.
We will explore the house, one of the finest historic houses in Ireland along
with the gardens. After lunch, London Festival Opera will perform in one of
the grand rooms. Return to Parknasilla in the afternoon.
Day 5 Parknasilla Resort. It would be unforgivable to come to such a place
as this and not have a complete day to enjoy the hotel and its extensive

grounds. For the energetic there will be a choice of a guided short or long
walk through the grounds and along the coast. Otherwise, relax with a good
book in one of the many vantage points scattered throughout the grounds.
Day 6 Lakes of Killarney & Muckross House. Morning excursion to the Killarney
National Park and the house and gardens of Muckross House. Tour the gardens
or house which was once owned by the Herbert family who entertained Queen
Victoria here in 1861. The setting by the lake shore with its mountain backdrop
is stunning. Afternoon at leisure. In the late afternoon London Festival Opera
will perform their farewell concert followed by afternoon tea.
£100 per person.
For generations this very special place has captured the imagination of many including such literary luminaries as George Bernard
Shaw. Pictures can only do limited justice to its location where water, islands and mountains create something spellbinding. Being the
West Coast of Ireland, we cannot promise you long sunny days for
your entire stay. In fact you are likely to experience the full spectrum
of weather in one day. But, it is this maritime climate and warming
Atlantic influences that create the almost sub-tropical landscape.
Situated in 500 acres, Parknasilla Resort is situated in the middle of
some of Kerry’s finest scenery. Here you will find interesting walks, tiny
sandy coves and beach huts for those who wish to swim in the sea.
Once a grand house, Parknasilla has grown gracefully into her life as
a hotel. The ground floor of the original main house is where you will
find a number of delightful sitting rooms, all offering wonderful views. Here also is the Pygmalion dining room where gourmet food is
provided using many locally sourced fine meats and fish.
The accommodation in the main house is either superior grade or suites which are furnished with antique furniture and luxurious
fabrics. The standard rooms are in a newer wing as are the recently added modern style suites. The health spa with a magnificent
swimming pool is a new addition and the views from the pool across the sea have to be seen to be believed.
Ultimately, what makes a great hotel is its staff. Here, you will find some of the best in the world all dedicated to making your stay in
Kerry a most memorable and joyful experience.
Dubrovnik Old Town
‘If you want to go to paradise on earth, go to
Dubrovnik’, so said George Bernard Shaw. If he
was making a return visit today we are sure he
would still hold the same sentiment. This
corner of Croatia is simply one of the most
beautiful coastal areas in Europe. The
combination of enchanting architecture, a
dramatically green mountain hinterland, a
verdant coastal strip with forests of pine and
cypresses bordered by a turquoise sea create a
landscape of extreme beauty.
To spend a week in this most perfectly
preserved maritime city is a joy and as usual on
our trips with the London Festival Opera, we
have planned a week of music and exploration
that will see us enjoying the delights of
Dubrovnik as well as the coast to the north and
south of the city.
During excursions with our local guides we
will learn more about the complex history of the
region. The Greeks established colonies and in
Roman times it became the province of Illiria.
The medieval period was dominated by Venice
and Hungary and in the 19th century it became
part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. After the
First World War it became part of Yugoslavia
and in 1990 experienced one of Europe’s
bloodiest conflicts and is now an independent
state with an opportunity to join the EEC.
So, in essence this region has it all. Endless
vistas which are truly breathtaking and a history
so fascinating and complex that lives up to all
you would expect of a Balkan country.
A SEVEN NIGHT STAY AT THE
FIVE-STAR GRAND VILLA
ARGENTINA IN DUBROVNIK
29th September to 6th October 2013
Catholic Monastery on the island of Lopud
Dalmatian Coast
The Itinerary
Day 1 London or Manchester to Dubrovnik. Fly by scheduled indirect flight.
A short drive takes you to the Grand Villa Argentina for your seven night stay.
Welcome drinks and dinner.
Day 2 Dubrovnik Walled City. Morning guided walk will include the major
points of interest and assist you with orientation for future individual
exploration. Transportation to the city gate will be provided for those who
prefer not to walk. Highlights will include the Renaissance Rector’s Palace,
the cathedral - a gem of Venetian Baroque architecture with an altarpiece by
Titian, and the Dominican Monastery with a fine collection of Croatian and
Italian art. Afternoon free, perhaps return to the old city for a walk along the
fortifications, lined with homes, shops and cafes and affording views across
the pantiles and out to sea. In the early evening we return to the city for a
performance by London Festival Opera in the historic Sponza Palace.
Day 3 Sipan, Lopud & Kolocep. After a leisurely breakfast we board the sleek
‘Sea Star’ motor launch and cruise to the island of Sipan. Here we walk through
olive groves to the gardens of Villa Skokibuha. Return to ‘Sea Star’ for lunch and
continue cruising to the islands of Lopud and Kolocep. This evening prior to
dinner we will be entertained by local singers and musicians on a terrace in the
hotel. Croatian folk music is very much alive and to our ears a delightful mix of
Croatian songs with influences of Greek and Italian melodies and rhythms.
Day 4 Cavtat & Konavle. Depart this morning for Cavtat one of Croatia’s
most picturesque fishing villages. Take a walk around the harbour and the
medieval village. Our next destination is the Konavoski Dvori restaurant
situated in some enchanting countryside. Here rivers and streams tumble
down from the mountain. Amongst the woodland scenery and surrounded
by water is a famous restaurant where we will enjoy speciality food which is
slow cooked over charcoal in large vats which are buried under the coals.
There will be some free time for those who wish to wander around the
waterways. After dinner, we return to the old town for a performance by
London Festival Opera at St Blaise’s Church.
Day 5 Dubrovnik. A day of rest and relaxation. Our tour guides will be happy
to organise any optional excursions you may care to make. In the evening
we will return to the old town for a performance by London Festival Opera.
Day 6 Kotor, Montenegro. Drive south across the border into Montenegro
for a visit to historic Kotor. The drive will take us around the scenic Kotor
Trsteno

Harbour and medieval village at Cavtat
Fjord, an incredibly picturesque route in the shadow of towering hills. We
will stop in Perast to visit Our Lady of the Rocks island with its Roman
Catholic church. In Kotor we will enter the charming walled old town with
our guides for a walking tour. It may not possess the sharp classical lines of
Dubrovnik, but its unspoilt streetscape is unique. After lunch in Kotor, enjoy
an afternoon at leisure before we head back into Croatia.
Day 7 Lapad & Trsteno. We start the morning tour with a visit to Villa
Sorkocevic with its elegant garden and ancient trees and then drive north to
Trsteno to explore the 500 year old arboretum set in a Gothic-Renaissance park
with its summer villa and Baroque fountain. Return to the hotel for an afternoon
at leisure. This evening attend a gala concert by London Festival Opera in the
enchanting Marin Drzic theatre. Built in the 1820’s it is a wonderful example of a
small elegant theatre and a charming setting for our farewell concert.
breakfast for your return scheduled indirect flight.
GRAND VILLA ARGENTINA
Hotel beach area Sea view room
Kotor Fjord
We have selected this marvellously located five star hotel as our base
for the week. It comprises of two wonderfully romantic vast villas
which are connected by a more modern building. Built on the side of
a cliff, you enter the hotel from the road on the sixth floor and most of
the rooms and public areas are in descending order down a series of
terraces offering lovely views of Dubrovnik and the offshore islands.
What make this character hotel particularly special are the garden
terraces, perfect for reading and enjoying the surrounding vistas.
The location is ideal; in a quiet area just fifteen minutes walk from
the old town. Its position and peaceful quality makes this hotel perfect
for a week long stay. Breakfast is usually taken on an outside terrace
and dinner can be inside or alfresco. In addition there are attractive
café and bar areas all with delightful views. The guest rooms are a
good size and well furnished in a traditional style but with all the
amenities you would expect to find in a five star hotel.
Sunset over Santa Maria della Salute, Venice
Venice is one of the most musical cities in the
world and when combined with its other
wealth of treasures we have something
splendid. From Vivaldi to Verdi our musical
programme will include great works of early
music to the golden age of opera. Where
better to listen to such inspiring works than
in the places they were written or performed.
Local musicians and our own
London Festival Opera will
perform in churches and
magnificent palaces. In
the beautiful Palazzo
Zen, London Festival
Opera will perform by
candlelight allowing us
to appreciate a spectacle
of the past as hundreds of
candles illuminate the
dazzling architecture and art.
There are of course many splendid hotels in
Venice. However, being very much a water city
we believe that having our own floating hotel
will be a great advantage. The MS Michelangelo
is a very comfortable vessel and is perfect for
our needs. The mooring site of the vessel in
Venice is ideal and only a short walk from St
Mark’s Square allowing for after dinner strolls
and individual exploration. Using the vessel as
our base also allows us to offer such a tour at
less than half the cost than if we were based in
a good centrally located hotel.
Although the vessel accommodates up to
140 passengers, we are limiting numbers for
this tour to 120 due to the size of some of the
venues we will be visiting. We have purposely
planned our trip later in the year to avoid the
tourist high season months when the crowds
of day trippers descend in their masses.
In addition to the music programme we
have arranged a number of excursions both in
the city and beyond and together with our
local guides we can promise you a very special
time in the glorious most serene republic.
The Music of La Serenissima
SIX NIGHTS IN THE MOST BEAUTIFUL
CITY ON EARTH
ABOARD THE MS MICHELANGELO
29th October to 4th November 2013
Antonio Viv aldi
The Itinerary
Day 1 London Gatwick or Manchester to Venice. Fly by scheduled direct flight
from Gatwick or indirect scheduled flight from Manchester. On arrival transfer to
the MS Michelangelo moored in the city. Welcome drinks and dinner this
evening will be followed by a performance onboard by London Festival Opera.
Day 2 La Fenice Opera House, St Mark’s Square & La Pieta Church. This
morning we will take a leisurely stroll with our knowledgeable local guide to
the famous newly restored grand La Fenice Opera House for an interior visit,
where we will have plenty of time here before walking back to the MS
Michelangelo. After lunch on board there will be an optional tour to St. Mark’s
Square which was the political and religious centre of the city when La
Serenissima ruled an empire. Here with your guide you will visit the Doge’s
Palace that housed the private residence of the Doge, the seat of government
and the Court of Justice. Continue to St. Mark’s Cathedral, a magnificent
building built on the plan of a Greek cross. Inside the cathedral you can
admire the famous mosaics. Later this afternoon we have arranged for an
exclusive private concert of Vivaldi themed music performed by a local
Venetian orchestra in Chiesa della Pieta, the church where Vivaldi composed
the Four Seasons.
Day 3 Hidden Venice & Palazzo Zen. After breakfast we embark on a walking
tour to discover the hidden corners of Venice. We will walk through the
Arsenale, a colossal shipyard of the Serenissima Republic; the San Giorgio dei
Greci church and its secret courtyard; Campo Santa Maria Formosa, one of the
city’s largest squares and perhaps the most Venetian place in town; and Marco
Polo’s House, before we reach the famous Rialto bridge. Here you will have time
to stroll around the market square. We return to the ship for lunch and have a
free afternoon to relax or explore further independently. After an early dinner
on our vessel we will travel by water taxis to Palazzo Zen to enjoy a concert by
London Festival Opera. We have hired the atmospheric Palazzo for the evening
which will be lit by candlelight and which will be acoustically perfect for the
performance. During the evening we will enjoy Venetian canapes and
refreshments including of course some Italian Prosecco.
Day 4 Verona. Join the full day trip to the mysterious city of Verona, mysterious
because its early history still remains largely unknown and is surrounded by
many theories. Your knowledgeable local guide will walk you through the city’s
streets and highlights include a visit to the famous Roman amphitheatre,
completed around 30 A.D. and the third largest in Italy after Rome’s Colosseum.
Lunch is at a local restaurant and the remainder of the afternoon at leisure to
enjoy this medieval city. Enjoy dinner onboard and an evening at leisure.
Day 5 Vicenza & Villa Barbaro, Maser. This morning depart by coach for the
cosmopolitan city of Vicenza, steeped in a rich history and culture. On a
walking tour of this beautiful city you will visit the magnificent Olympic
Theatre, built between 1580 and 1585; it is the oldest surviving enclosed
theatre in the world. The tour continues into the heart of Vicenza, to the
enchanting Piazza dei Signori where the unmistakable Palladian Basilica
stands out. You will have free time here before a scenic drive through the
charming Treviso countryside to Maser. Enjoy lunch and wine tasting at the
restaurant of the Villa Barbaro, one of Andrea Palladio’s masterpieces, still a
working home and farm, where wines are produced and exported globally.

After lunch, you will have free time to discover this beautiful villa and its
wonderful Renaissance works.
On day 4 or 5 we hope to be able to offer you the opportunity to attend an
optional evening performance at one of Venice’s theatres. This is dependent on
the theatre schedules and availability and more details will be available within 3
months of departure.
Day 6 Artisans of Venice & Ca Rezzonico. Today enjoy a full day tour by
private motor launch visiting the three most beautiful islands of the lagoon.
You will pass many of the 40 picturesque islands that surround the Venetian
Lagoon visiting Murano, renowned since 1291 for its glass manufacture; here
you will witness masters of this delicate craft at work during a visit to a
leading factory. Continue to Burano, a tiny island dotted with brightly
painted houses. Its fame is due to traditional lace making, an art still
practiced by many of the local women. There will be time to wander and
browse the little shops of this cheerful fishing village before heading to
Torcello, once the most populated of the early lagoon communities but
nowadays the most peaceful. We will stop here for lunch before taking a
pleasant stroll to the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assumpta, built in the 7th
century. This evening we board water taxis to take us to Ca Rezzonico,
regarded as one of Venice’s premier museums. Arriving after closing time we
have exclusive hire of the museum and on arrival will enjoy a welcome drink,
a selection of cheeses, nibbles and canapes. There will be time to explore the
rooms before a private concert by London Festival Opera in the beautiful
ballroom. Local experts and museum staff will accompany us for the evening
and be on hand to discuss the history of the museum. After the concert
there will be a farewell cocktail and Italian buffet style meal before we return
to the vessel by water taxi.
Day 7 Venice to London Gatwick or Manchester. After breakfast on board we
will disembark and return to the airport for the scheduled direct flight to
London Gatwick or indirect flight to Manchester.
We have been most fortunate in acquiring one of the best vessels afloat in
Europe today. Built in 2004 and refurbished in 2011, the four star MS Johann
Strauss is a 90 cabin vessel built to the highest specifications. Although the
vessel can carry up to 180 passengers, we limit passenger numbers to 160 to
maximise your space onboard. The vessel receives constant praise from
passengers and an above average repeat passenger ratio.
Spacious Cabins
One of the many fine features of the vessel are the number of French balcony
cabins. There are over 60 such cabins with a sliding glass door. From these cabins,
which are located on the Opera and Waltz decks, the views are spectacular and for
many the opportunity to open the door to fresh air is a great bonus.
All cabins are large, being 170 square feet of space, comparing favourably with
hotel rooms or the better cabins on large ships. They are well planned and
smartly furnished in light woods and restful colours. Facilities include individually
controlled heating and air conditioning, television, telephone, minibar, safe,
hairdryer, radio and a well appointed bathroom with shower and toilet.
Public Areas
A well designed feature of the MS Johann Strauss is the positioning of the
restaurant, lounge, bar and café on the top deck. These public areas have floor to
ceiling windows, affording excellent views as you dine or relax. On board there is
also a fitness centre with a sauna, whirlpool and gymnasium equipment. When
cruising the spacious sun deck is a perfect place to relax onboard and watch daily
life on the banks of the river. There is also a small library onboard. In addition
Wi-Fi will be available from 2013 for which a voucher can be purchased onboard.
tea is also provided daily with a choice of cakes. Dinner is a four course affair
with a varied selection of starters, main dishes, cheese plate and desserts. Coffee
The Reichsburg and the town of Cochem
The mighty Rhine, for so long one of Europe’s
main trading routes contrasts beautifully with
our exploration of the Moselle, surely one of the
loveliest rivers in all Europe. We will also visit the
historic city of Heidelberg on the Neckar River,
one of Europe’s great seats of learning. Most
trips on offer along the Rhine are based on four
to six days and concentrate on only one section
of the river. Here you have a most
comprehensive journey including some of the
most interesting places in the Netherlands,
combined with the great wine producing areas
along the Moselle and the historic cities of
Cologne, Koblenz and Heidelberg as well as the
enchanting resort of Baden-Baden.
Added to these riches are visits in France to
Strasbourg, an endlessly fascinating place in
the delightful Alsace region. This detailed
look at two of Europe’s great rivers will offer a
captivating and romantic journey. The
scenery is stunning and makes an excellent
combination with the artistic riches we shall
see along the way from the wonderful
collections on show in the museums and
galleries to the fairytale castles and medieval
charms of the towns and villages.
Rivers of Music
Musical Interludes
Not only have we organised one of the most comprehensive trips along
these two great rivers, but have added the extra dimension of music. The
journey along the Rhine with its strong connections with the lives of
Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Schumann and Mozart is all the more enjoyable
when accompanied by the music of the masters. We will have the pleasure
of listening to London Festival Opera perform both on board and ashore as
well as other highlights such as a Chopin concert in the moated castle in
Koblenz and a string quartet recital in the medieval castle of Burg
Konradsheim in Cologne. The joy of music performed in such special places
puts the finishing touch to a splendid trip. In addition, our guest speaker
Humphrey Burton will add much to our understanding. Information on
London Festival Opera and all our guest speakers can be found on page 5.
The Itinerary
9th-13th centuries, although much was rebuilt in the Gothic style after the 1356
earthquake. Spend the afternoon at leisure or join an optional excursion to the
Black Forest. After dinner enjoy a performance by London Festival Opera.
Day 3 Strasbourg. From the port of Kehl, join a morning guided tour which
will introduce us to the delights of Strasbourg including the fascinating old
quarter. Start with the Quai de la Petite France where the River Ill splits into a
number of canals, see the Ponts Couverts, a series of wooden bridges dating
back to the 13th century, the Place Gutenberg and the Cathedral of Notre
Dame, the tallest medieval building in Europe. Afternoon at leisure, and this
evening we hope to attend an optional performance at the Opera National
du Rhin. Performance details are not available at the time of going to press.
This evening moor overnight in Kehl.
Day 4 Baden-Baden. This morning we drive inland to the spa town of Baden-
Baden. This beautiful belle-epoch resort is one of Germany’s best kept secrets.
The spa assembly rooms and famously elegant casino form the focal point of the
town, both architecturally and socially. In the spa park, the Lichtentaler Allee runs
for several kilometres from the pump room to Lichtental Convent past the neobaroque
theatre. The old quarter is full of elegant houses, exclusive boutiques
which somehow manages to retain its old
world charm and yet be very much of the
21st century. Sail this afternoon and relax
onboard while enjoying a performance by
London Festival Opera.
Day 5 Heidelberg. From our berth in
Mannheim, we visit Heidelberg where we Bernkastel market square
have a day to enjoy this most picturesque and romantic of German cities which
is home to Germany’s oldest university, dating back to 1386. A morning tour will
include the castle, a dramatically sited red sandstone ruin that dominates the
city, the old town with its famous market place and the city gates.
Day 6 Rudesheim & Koblenz. This morning we have a brief stop at the
colourful riverside town of Rudesheim. We have a short time here for some
independent exploring before we sail on to Koblenz where we join the
Moselle. This section of the Rhine is regarded by many as the most romantic
with its cliff hugging castles and vine clad hills. In the late afternoon we arrive
in Koblenz which sits on the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle. Enjoy a
guided walking tour of Koblenz followed by a concert of Chopin’s piano music
in the 14th century moated castle owned by the Princes of Hohenzollern.
Day 7 Bernkastel & Trier. Here in the heart of the Moselle Valley we will explore
lovely Bernkastel on a walking tour. Later we drive to nearby Trier, onetime
capital of the Roman Western Empire and a fascinating mix of European
architectural styles, but pride of place goes to the most impressive group of
Roman monuments north of the Alps. On the excursion see the Roman ruins
including the impressive Porta Nigra, the most important ancient monument in
the city and the largest Roman city gate extant. Sail in the late evening.
Day 8 Cochem & Bonn. The town of Cochem is famous for its 11th century
Schloss and the Reichsburg, set impressively on a tree clad hill above a bend
of the river. On the guided tour, walk along its winding medieval streets and
see the Baroque Town Hall. Cruise back up the Moselle this afternoon,
rejoining the Rhine and reaching Bonn at midnight.
Day 9 Bonn & Cologne. Morning visit to Beethoven’s House, followed by a
brief tour of Bonn. In the late morning sail on to Cologne and after lunch
there will be a guided walk along the river promenade and through the old
town to the magnificent cathedral, the largest in Germany. Our visit to
Cologne will end with a string quartet recital in the late medieval castle of
Burg Konradsheim, an imposing moated castle and a striking setting to enjoy
the works of Mendelssohn and Schumann.
Day 10 Arnhem. This morning drive to the nearby Palace of Het Loo, the
favoured summer residence of the Dutch Royal family from 1686 to 1975.
The Palace and grounds have undergone a spectacular restoration returning
them to their original 17th century splendour. Rejoin the vessel for lunch and
enjoy some free time to explore this afternoon. Arnhem is well known
because of the airborne paratrooper landings and the battles around the
bridge over the Rhine. On the town side of the bridge stands a monument
commemorating the British forces. This afternoon there will be an optional
excursion to the Airborne Museum, dedicated to the historic military
‘Operation Market Garden’ in World War II.
Day 11 The Hague & Delft. From Rotterdam we will head for The Hague where
our first stop is the Gemeentemuseum where we will see the ‘View of Delft’ by
Johannes Vermeer, ‘The Bull’ by Paulus Potter and ‘The Anatomy Lesson of Dr.
Nicholaes Tulp’ by Rembrandt van Rijn. Continue to nearby Delft for lunch. Enjoy a
tour of the famous Delft Blue Pottery before returning to the vessel. This evening
there will be a farewell dinner onboard and a concert by London Festival Opera.
Built in the Netherlands in 2003, this attractive four star vessel has been
associated with us since her launch. Very much of the new generation of river
vessels, the MS Rembrandt is however smaller than most. With a maximum of
just 78 guests rather than the customary 160-200, she is able to offer a yacht-like
atmosphere which is enhanced by the stylish décor of beautiful woods and
luxurious fabrics.
Public Areas
The main lounge is located forward on the Upper deck and the views from
both the side and forward windows are marvellous. Likewise the dining room,
which offers a single sitting, also has large windows on both sides of the room,
so wherever you are you can watch the riverside pass slowly by. When sailing
and also in port, one of the best places to be is on the Sun and Observation
deck where the views can be appreciated from the comfortable deck
furniture.
Atmosphere onboard
There is a friendly and informal atmosphere onboard and although there are no
elaborate shows; a musician will play each evening whilst you relax in the
lounge and guest speakers will provide a series of interesting talks. The day to
day programme will be co-ordinated by the Noble Caledonia Cruise Director
who will provide daily briefings on the forthcoming events.
For those contemplating a tour of Middle
ideal alternative of relatively short journeys by
road, whilst the major part of the itinerary is
This is the perfect trip for those who enjoy
seeing something different every day. Our
floating hotel, the MS Frederic Chopin
transports you in considerable comfort along
vessel allows you to absorb the changing
landscape of town and country and reflect on
the many ways that the river has influenced
the course of history.
Launched in 2001, Sea Cloud II is a stunning vessel, built
along traditional lines, but offering deluxe accommodation.
She combines timeless elegance of sailing ships of the past
with the highest safety standards and the luxurious comfort
of modern cruise ships. Just like her legendary sister ship Sea
Cloud, the 29,600 square feet of sails is set by hand which is a
truly magical sight.
Built to accommodate 96 passengers in five star luxury,
she offers a range of beautifully appointed suites and cabins
which are furnished with great style. All accommodations
have outside views and the bathrooms, in light marble, are
unusually spacious and extremely comfortable. The finest,
carefully chosen fabrics, combined with leather, rattan and
other materials, brass and gold, precious woods and marble
together create an impressive ensemble.
No expense has been spared to create a sympathetic
ambience in both the accommodations and public areas
and this is reflected throughout the vessel. Public areas
include an elegant lounge, library, fitness centre, boutique,
lido bar and hospital. The single sitting dining room is airy
and modern and the quality of the cuisine and service will
be to the highest of standards, as one would expect on a Sea
Cloud II cruise. Coffee and freshly baked pastries are offered
early each morning in the lounge and in the afternoon there
are more baked goods and cakes. Relax on the Lido deck
and experience the natural grandeur of travelling under sail,
rekindling memories of a bygone age.
To be on deck when the sails are fully extended is a
marvellous experience. The forces of nature and ingenuity of
man combining in the most natural of ways allows us to
experience the thrill of sailing and a form of transport that
has existed since the earliest of times.
MUSIC AND WINE IN THE ADRIATIC
ABOARD SEA CLOUD II
WITH RODNEY GREENBERG
We have chartered the magnificent Sea Cloud
II for an autumn exploration of Italy’s Adriatic
Coast. This promises to be a very special
cruise, combining, wine and music with one
of the world’s most splendid sailing yachts.
To be on deck when the sails are fully
extended as we navigate through the
Adriatic is a marvellous experience.
This a journey that will appeal to those who
enjoy being at sea, particularly under sail. Our
days will be split between the port of call and
time at sea so you will have ample time to
enjoy the vessel. We have selected what we
believe to be one of the most perfect regions
for sailing. The beauty of the Adriatic and
coastal Italy is indisputable. However, to
experience a journey through its amazingly
clear waters aboard a vessel of the character
and pedigree of Sea Cloud II makes it very
special. There could not be a more fitting
place to start our sea journey than from the
magnificence of Venice, and no better ending
than to sail into Valletta’s Grand Harbour, a
breathtaking experience at the best of times,
but on Sea Cloud II quite unforgettable.
To add to your experience, we are offering
you the chance to travel to Venice in style,
aboard one of the world’s most famous
trains, the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express.
After your cruise, you also have the chance to
extend your stay in Malta with a two-night
stay at the five-star Hotel Phoenicia.
Music & Wine
Cobbled streets with years of history will unfold before us as we make our
way south aboard our luxurious sailing yacht. Explore UNESCO Heritage sites,
walk through historic hilltop villages and discover the uniqueness of each
region. Near the coast lie some of the best wine regions and during our
journey we will be visiting and tasting some of the finest examples. Added to
our enjoyment, there will be music in some stunning venues, from Chiesa
della Pieta in Venice, to the private Palazzo Tamborino-Cezzi in Lecce and the
Palazzo Beneventano in Syracuse. We are also delighted that a soprano
soloist and concert pianist from London Festival Opera will be joining us for
the cruise to entertain us with programmes from the classical and lighter
repertoire. We have allowed for several half days at sea, and what could be
better than to enjoy stunning music as we sail the Adriatic.
The Itinerary
Day 1 London to Venice, Italy. Fly by
scheduled flight. On arrival, transfer to your
four-star hotel for a two night stay.
Afternoon at leisure.
Day 2 Venice. This morning there will be a
tour to La Fenice, one of the most famous
performances here included Rossini, Bellini,
Boito, Perosi and Wolf-Ferrari and in the 20th
century, Stravinskij, Gershwin, Luigi Nono,
the soprano Maria Callas, and the tenor
Luciano Pavarotti. Later this afternoon we have arranged an exclusive private
concert of Vivaldi themed music performed by a local Venetian orchestra in
Chiesa della Pieta, the church where Vivaldi composed the Four Seasons.
Day 3 Venice. This morning a guided tour will include St. Mark’s Square
which was the political and religious centre of the city when La Serenissima
ruled an empire. Visit Doges Palace which housed the private residence of
the Doge, the seat of government and the Court of Justice. Continue to St
Mark’s Cathedral where you can admire the famous mosaics. Later, transfer
to the Sea Cloud II for embarkation and sail this evening.
Day 4 Ravenna. Among all the Italian towns and cities steeped in faith,
Ravenna boasts a unique heritage with its collection of early Christian
mosaics and monuments. On a guided walking tour we will explore the 5th
and 6th century buildings, a wonderful blend of Graeco-Roman tradition,
Christian iconography and oriental and Western styles. Return to the vessel
for lunch and spend a relaxing afternoon onboard as we sail to Ancona and
enjoy an onboard performance by London Festival Opera.
Day 5 Ancona. Ancona is the chief town of the Region of Marche on the
Adriatic Sea. It has the shape of an amphitheatre on the slopes of the rocky
promontory of Mount Conero and has ancient origins, founded in the 4th
S E A

century B.C. During the morning tour visit the Cathedral of Saint Ciriaco, a
Romanesque building with a mix of Byzantine and Gothic style. The old part of
the town’s monuments are concentrated in a few hundred metres such as the
Merchants Lodge, a beautiful 15th century hall for the merchants’ meetings;
the Trajan Arch erected in AD 115 in honour of the Roman Emperor Trajan
who built the port of Ancona, and the Archaelogical Musems. The tour will
proceed to the Passetto, a panoramic viewpoint and to the Riviera del Conero.
Continue towards Ancona and stop at the famous Cantina Moroder for some
wine tasting. Return to the vessel for lunch and sail to Bari this afternoon.
Day 6 Bari for Alberobello. Morning at sea. This afternoon we are in Apulia;
here the countryside is scattered with “trulli”, limestone dwellings built with
dome or conical roofs. We will enjoy a pleasant walk in Alberobello, a fairy-tale
trulli village and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Also visit “Cantina Albea” and
its wine museum, home to pictures and old instruments used in the past for
the production of wine. There will be a tasting of two wines along with a talk
on the wine production. Sail this evening whilst we are entertained by
London Festival Opera.
Day 7 Otranto for Lecce. From the port of Otranto we will drive to Lecce, often
referred to as ‘The Florence of the South’ with an amazing collection of Baroque
architecture. A guided tour will include a visit to the beautifully decorated Santa
Croce Basilica and Piazza Duomo, considered one of the finest and most
impressive squares in Southern Italy. After the tour, there will be an exclusive,
private visit to the 15th century Palazzo Tamborino-Cezzi. The owner of the
palazzo will personally take us on a tour, telling interesting stories and
anecdotes regarding his family and the palazzo itself. Enjoy a light lunch of local
specialities before a concert of traditional music of the Salento region called La
Pizzica, a popular Italian folk dance, originally from the Salento peninsula.
Day 8 Crotone for Santa Severina. Drive inland to Santa Severina, a pretty
town overlooking the Neto River valley. It is renowned for its wonderful
Carrafa castle-fortress. From the 9th to the 11th century the town lived its
period of greatest splendour: the Baptistery, which is accessed via a little door
in the Cathedral, is the oldest Byzantine monument in Calabria. The Church of
Saint Filomena, an interesting example of Byzantine-Norman architecture, is
an 11th century construction with a small dome decorated with columns.
What was once the Church of the Pozzoleo has been restored and today
holds the crypt of Saint Filomena. After the tour there will be the opportunity
to taste the famous Cirò’s wine and sample the local cuisine: olive oil, local
cold cuts, a selection of cheese such as the Crotonese pecorino cheese and
salted ricotta. After some time to relax at the farm, return to the vessel and sail
this afternoon as we are entertained onboard by London Festival Opera.
Day 9 Taormina, Sicily. After a morning cruising we arrive in Sicily and drive
through the small town of Naxos to reach Taormina, one of the most
beautiful villages in Sicily. Settled on a hill of the Monte Tauro, Taormina
dominates two grand, sweeping bays below and the peak of Mount Etna on
the southern side, Europe’s highest active volcano which is often capped
with snow. The views are simply breathtaking. On a walking tour, explore the
atmospheric alleys and admire the 15th century Palazzo Corvaja. Also visit
the impressive Greek theatre, built in the third century B.C. and enjoy some
free time before returning to the vessel. Later we will enjoy a performance by
London Festival Opera onboard.
Day 10 Syracuse, Sicily. This morning we will land at Syracuse, a city which
once rivalled Athens as the largest and most beautiful city in the Greek
world. Our exploration will begin with a visit to the Archaeological Zone and
a well preserved Greek theatre with seats carved from limestone. Paradise
Quarry, was the primary source of that limestone and is the site of the
curious ‘Dionysus’ Ear’ - a vast grotto with an amplifying resonance. In late
afternoon attend a concert in the beautiful Palazzo Beneventano, a stunning
private 18th century palace.
Day 11 Valletta, Malta to London. Arrive in Valletta’s Grand Harbour this
morning. Disembark and transfer to the airport for the return scheduled
History and Music Under Sail
The Summer Palace at Peterhof, St Petersburg
Join us for a journey of history, art and music
in the Baltic aboard the magnificent Sea
Cloud II one of the largest fully rigged threemast
sailing ships ever built for passengers.
The Baltic is to Northern Europe what the
Mediterranean is to Southern Europe. So, at
the height of summer where better to
explore under sail than on a journey that
begins in St Petersburg, taking in the most
interesting and important places around the
Baltic before sailing across to Dundee.
Bordered by many countries vying for
commercial and political influence, the
Baltic’s long history makes a fascinating study
as we visit the major cities of this almost
enclosed inland sea. With our guest speakers
and local guides we can see how in the
Middle Ages it was dominated by German
merchants, who formed the Hanseatic
League. This afforded a protection for their
ships as they traded in salted herring and cod
from Norway and Iceland, copper ore from
Sweden, timber and furs from Russia and
Poland, as well as hemp, honey and amber. In
the ebb and flow of history the Russian
Empire later became a more dominant
political force and Sweden a more dominant
trading nation, only to see the rise again of
Germany in the last fifty years and the
breakup of the Russian Empire in the events
of the early 1990s.
Planning an itinerary for a sailing ship is
somewhat different to conventional cruising
as an important aspect is the time given over
to sail. Unpredictable winds mean allowances
have been made, after all the whole point of
joining a vessel such as Sea Cloud II is to have
sufficient time on board and at sea to
experience the joy of being under sail. So,
with this in mind the itinerary includes more
time than usual at sea.
ABOARD SEA CLOUD II
WITH PETER WARWICK
& HUMPHREY BURTON
9th to 23rd July 2014
in the Baltic
The Itinerary
Day 1 London Heathrow to St Petersburg, Russia. Fly by scheduled flight.
Arrive in the afternoon and transfer to Sea Cloud II. Welcome drinks and
dinner onboard. Moor overnight.
Day 2 St Petersburg. We will begin our exploration of St Petersburg with a
morning city tour which will take us on a drive past many of the fine
aristocratic palaces and noble buildings including the splendid St Isaac
Cathedral and the St Peter & Paul Fortress. Return to Sea Cloud II for lunch and
enjoy an afternoon at leisure either onboard or exploring St Petersburg
independently. After an early evening meal onboard, we drive to the
magnificent Yusupov Palace for a private visit. Once the home of Prince Felix
Yusupov, the palace has been recently refurbished and now includes a
theatre. A guided tour of the palace where Rasputin met his end will be
followed by drinks and canapés and a performance by London Festival Opera.
Day 3 St Petersburg. This morning we drive out to Peterhof, where a series
of terraces bright with gilded animated fountains lead to the palace built by
Peter the Great on the edge of the Gulf of Finland. After touring the grand
palace and park, return to the vessel for an early lunch. The afternoon will be
devoted to the Hermitage, a great treasure house of art and history,
containing some of the finest European paintings, amassed by Catherine the
Great, as well as the Impressionists collected by the Russian merchants in the
early 20th century. Sail in the late afternoon.
Day 4 Helsinki, Finland. Spend a relaxing morning and arrive in Helsinki
during lunch. We shall moor close to the city centre and explore Helsinki by
foot. Visit the colourful Market Square, the President’s Palace, the impressive
architecture of Senate Square including the Lutheran Cathedral of Finland
and Uspenski Cathedral, the Russian Orthodox Church with its striking onion
domes. Take advantage of the long northern evening light with a pre or post
dinner walk. Sail in the late evening.
Day 5 Tallinn, Estonia. This historic maritime city completed its city walls in
the 16th century and the Old Town within these walls is one of the
best-preserved from the Middle Ages. Tallinn is dominated by Toompea
Castle, once a fortress, and now the seat of the Estonian parliament. It is set
high on a steep hillside overlooking the city and the Baltic. Afternoon at sea
as we begin our crossing of the Baltic. Evening concert by London Festival
Day 6 Stockholm, Sweden. This morning we sail through the many islands of
the Swedish Archipelago into Stockholm. This is a great sailing area and the
islands are peppered with attractive summer homes. Spend the afternoon
exploring this handsome city, known as the ‘city on the water’. It is built on 14
small islands among open bays and narrow channels. It is fitting, therefore, that
Stockholm has the Vasa ship, one of the outstanding archaeological discoveries
of the 20th century. Stockholm also has a magnificent ‘Old Town’, splendid
Baroque and 19th-century buildings with distinctive green copper roofs and
gleaming towers. Moor overnight in Stockholm and from our central mooring
we will be able to enjoy the delights of this most sophisticated and lovely city.
Day 7 Stockholm. Enjoy a free morning in Stockholm and sail at lunchtime,
through the Stockholm archipelago and on to the Swedish Island of Gotland.
Day 8 Visby, Gotland. Today we visit this once important Hanseatic port. Best
explored on foot, the beautifully preserved medieval town snuggles inside
13th century walls, housing 44 watchtowers. In Viking times and several
centuries after, the Swedish island of Gotland and especially the city of Visby,
became a centre of trade in the Baltic Sea and is a World Heritage site. Walk its
streets from the Middle Ages and see its gardens ablaze with flowers, earning
the city its nickname “the city of ruins and roses.” Later visit the Viking exhibits
at the Fornsal Museum and wander the paths of the botanical gardens. Sail
during lunch. Evening performance by London Festival Opera.
Day 9 Gdansk, Poland. We have the day to explore Gdansk, formerly known
as Danzig, a leading member of the Hanseatic League. This great port has
been sympathetically restored after extensive war damage and is, again, one
of Europe’s most splendid cities. Our visit includes the church of St Mary, an
enormous Gothic hall church with crystal vaulting, Arthur’s Hall and the
Knight’s Great Watermill. Gdansk is also famous as the city of “Solidarity”,
where the dockers united to overthrow the Polish Communist regime. We
visit the monument commemorating this struggle.
Day 10 Bornholm, Denmark. We visit the beautiful Bornholm Island with its
woodland and attractive rocky coastline dotted with fishing villages. We
moor in Gudhjem and visit Nykirke, one of the 12th-century round churches
on the island. Although of simple style, the church has a beautiful altarpiece,
thought to have been made in a Lübeck workshop around 1510. Evening
performance by London Festival Opera.
Day 11 Copenhagen. We have a full day in the charming Danish capital which
will include the Palace of Amailienborg (exterior only), the four identical Rococo
buildings have been the Royal Residence since 1784. Also see Christiansborg
Castle, the Royal Theatre and Nyhavn. In the afternoon explore independently
or join the excursion to Helsingor to see the Kronborg Castle, one of Europe’s
most important Renaissance castles. Later, see St Olai’s Church and the carefully
restored medieval merchants and ferrymen’s houses. Sail in the late evening.
Day 12 Skagen, Denmark. Relax as we cruise the Kattegat to the far northern
tip of Denmark and the picturesque town of Skagen. After lunch we enjoy a
few hours in Skagen, famous for its summer light which attracted artists in
large numbers from the 1870s to the First World War. Walk through its flower
filled streets to the Museum which houses a marvellous collection of
paintings by Danish artists. Evening performance by London Festival Opera.
Day 13 Lillesand, Norway. A short crossing across the Skagerrak brings us to
the southern coast of Norway. Lillesand is one of Norway’s best kept secrets,
a charming summer resort. Small islands and skerries dot the coastline
making the approach to the town by sea a memorable sight. On a morning
ashore we can soak up the unique atmosphere of a Norwegian summer
resort in the old town with its enchanting white clapboard houses. Return to
the vessel for lunch.
Day 14 At sea. The last opportunity to enjoy a day under sail. Farewell drinks,
dinner and concert by London Festival Opera.
