Scholar lectures start Dec. 19<br />

Culture’s Scholar Lectures<br />
Jewish Studies continues at 7<br />
p.m. Dec. 19 with UCSD<br />
Professor Sanford Lakoff, in<br />
the Schulman<br />
Auditorium of the<br />
Carlsbad Dove<br />
Library, 1775 Dove<br />
Lane. His lecture is<br />
titled, “Report from<br />
Iraq and Israel.”<br />
In his talk, Lakoff<br />
will describe experiences<br />
and observations<br />
made during his<br />
recent trip to Iraq where he<br />
participated in an international<br />
conference titled “Liberty,<br />
Democracy, and New Realities<br />
in the Middle East and North<br />
Africa.” He will also discuss<br />

six potential impediments for<br />
establishing liberal democracies<br />
in the region’s post-tyrannical<br />
countries.<br />
Lakoff, is professor emeritus<br />
of political science and<br />
author of “Equality in<br />
Political Philosophy,”<br />
“Democracy: History,<br />
<strong>The</strong>ory and Practice,”<br />
and “Max Lerner:<br />
Pilgrim in the<br />
Promised Land.”<br />
Future lectures<br />
will feature professors<br />
speaking on their<br />
own areas of research.<br />
Rabbi Scott Meltzer of San<br />
Diego State University in<br />
January, will speak about<br />
“Messianic Parallels in<br />
Rabbinic Literature and the<br />
New Testament.” In<br />

Light Up Leucadia holiday<br />
lighting contest.<br />
Any business located on<br />
<strong>Coast</strong> Highway 101 between<br />
La Costa Avenue and<br />
Encinitas Boulevard is eligible<br />
to participate. Judging<br />
will be done by community<br />
members during the month<br />
February, Joellyn Zollman<br />
will share on “Shalom,<br />
Hunan! An Historical<br />
Exploration of American<br />
Jews and Chinese Food.”<br />
Other speakers include<br />
Professor Risa Levitt Kohn<br />
and Professor Alyssa<br />
Sepinwall.<br />
