Ambassador's message
I would like to start by wishing everyone a peaceful and happy New Year from
myself, Margaret and the Embassy team. 2009 is the year of the ox which, I am told, means values
of perseverance and tenacity are to the fore. We will all need these gambarou qualities in 2009 and
the Embassy team looks forward to working with you all in the year ahead to further strengthen the
many ties that link Ireland and Japan. I am particularly delighted that the Japanese started 2009 with
an Irish flavour with Enya's concert on NHK's new year's eve programme.
2009 is certainly off to a good start with the official visit to Japan by the Taoiseach, Brian Cowen,
earlier this month. You can read more about the visit below. The year ahead will undoubtedly
be challenging economically for both Ireland and Japan and the trade mission which accompanied
the Taoiseach contributed to growing trade and investment between the two countries. This will be a
major focus for the Embassy and the Government Agencies in the period ahead.
Looking forward, we have the Ireland Festival throughout Japan in March with the usual mix of
parades, celebrations and events. This year's Festival looks set to be bigger and better than ever
before and I hope many of you will get a chance to take part. Full details will shortly be available on
the Embassy website and this years' Festival brochure.
The Embassy is starting the new year with a new look newsletter which I hope you will enjoy
reading. As ever, we welcome your feedback, so let us know what you think.
RTÉ podcast: 'Ireland of Tomorrow - A Presidential Lecture Series'
RTÉ radio broadcast three special programmes over the New Year holiday examining the kind of
Ireland that might emerge in the coming years. The programmes, 'Ireland of Tomorrow - A
Presidential Lecture Series', were broadcast in the Liveline slot on Radio 1 and are based on idea by
President McAleese. The aim of the three programmes is to discuss the nature, shape and values of
Ireland in the period ahead, including against the background of the current economic
challenges. The President's hope was that such a series might prompt a wider conversation
throughout the island and also the Irish diaspora around the world.
The series was recorded in front of an audience of young people at Áras an Uachtaráin, hosted by
the President and moderated by RTÉ's Joe Duffy. Each programme had a sub-theme addressed by a
guest keynote speaker - Martin O'Neill (Manager of Aston Villa football club ) on 'What it means
to be Irish'; Professor Louise Richardson (Harvard) on 'Ireland's Role in the World'; and Pádraig Ó
Ceidigh (Chairman of Aer Arann) on 'Ireland - Economy or Society'. The series is available on
podcast on the RTÉ website at http://www.rte.ie/radio1/presidential/.
