Electricity, water and public transport for the Bavarian metropolis<br />

Stadtwerke München (SWM) is a city-owned utility and service company.<br />

As a service provider for the capital and its region, SWM plays<br />

a central role in providing vital services of general interest to Munich’s<br />

citizens. For decades, SWM has supplied the Bavarian metropolis<br />

with energy (electricity, natural gas and district heating)<br />

and fresh drinking water from the alpine uplands of Bavaria and<br />

consistently assures the maximum safe and prudent use of resources.<br />

In addition to energy production and water catchment, its services<br />

comprise grid and network management, sales and distribution<br />

– and with 18 indoor and outdoor swimming pools SWM operates<br />

one of the most modern bathing environments in Germany.<br />

The MVG transport subsidiary is responsible for the underground,<br />

bus and tram systems and is therefore a significant pillar in Munich’s<br />

public transport network. SWM has approximately 7,000 employees,<br />

making it not only one of the major employers in Munich<br />

but also one of the largest municipal utilities in Germany.<br />

Two data centers for automated disaster recovery<br />

In the same way that SWM spurs the implementation of innovative<br />

and pioneering infrastructure measures in the Bavarian capital including,<br />

for instance, fiberglass grid extensions or expanding district<br />

heating, it also invests in state-of-the-art and future-proof IT<br />

infrastructure for the company. SWM has been relying on virtualization<br />

for some time. However, the new challenge was to create an<br />

automated disaster recovery concept for maximum security – and<br />

the construction of a second data center opened up the possibility<br />

of its implementation. “We use the second site as a failover data<br />

center and are thus able to attain a higher level of availability,”<br />

explains Pascal Fuckerieder, Team Leader Database Applications<br />

at SWM. “At the same time we wanted to achieve convenient scalability<br />

for our server landscape.” The ability to automatically recover<br />

critical business applications is based on a concept that combines<br />

easily scalable PRIMERGY Blade Servers with intelligent manageability<br />

solutions by <strong>Fujitsu</strong> and VMware.<br />

The Dynamic Cube<br />
