Forward
Welcome to LaBatte Simmentals 30th Annual Spring Bull & Female Sale on Friday, March 5, 2010 at Johnstone Auction
Mart. 4 miles west of Moose Jaw on #1 highway. I’d really like to thank all our bidders and buyers from previous sales and
the effort you make to attend our sale. Sometimes the weather and roads haven’t been very good for traveling, but you
have made a great effort to get here and that is very much appreciated. Wow! I can’t believe this is the 30th year we have
been coming to Johnstone with our bull and female sale. How time fl ies! It’s been a pleasure working with the Johnstone’s
– Wayne, Dot, Scott and Cory over the years.
It is a new decade and with that I believe there is a lot of optimism that the cattle cycle will again turn around and be a very
positive industry. With the cow herd numbers very low in the U.S. and Canada, it’s only a matter of time and we are going
to see record prices – be ready. Simmental genetics will be a very important part of that turnaround with the commercial
man and feedlot operator. With Simmental’s high maternal traits, superior performance in the feedlot, excellent carcass
value and quiet disposition, they will play a huge part in the future of the beef industry. Our philosophy hasn’t changed,
as we will continue to put emphasis on calving ease, fertility, fl eshing ease, performance, disposition, haircoats and udder
quality. Those naturally thick, heavy muscled, deep bodied cattle that fl esh easy and gain rapidly continue to be the most
effi cient, functional and profi table cattle in the beef industry.
Our offering this year, along with our guest consignor 3D Simmentals, consists of 80 thick, meaty beef bulls along with 20
open replacement heifers, consisting of Red factor, blacks and fullbloods. Our red bull pen will again be very consistent
from top to bottom. All bulls are polled and several generations red. Our red bulls will again be headlined by TNT Accelerator
226S sons, the great Gunner son who’s done such an exceptional job for us both males and females. Also will be
a group sired by our junior herdsire, S Paw Turbo Charged, as they look awesome. This is defi nitely the best set of Black
bulls to come to Moose Jaw, headlined by sons of the $45,000 KBR Exciter 758T bull, IPU Resistol 193R and 680S. They
are moderate, thick, hairy and good. We will again be offering 10 Fullblood bulls, full Flecks or high percentage Fleckvieh
and some polled. There is an excellent selection of bulls in this year’s offering, from powerful beef bulls to calving ease
bulls and they are affordable as 75% of our bulls sell in the $2,000 - $4,000 price range.
If you are unable to attend the sale, give myself or Dean or any of the sales staff a call to have the offering evaluated for
you. We can be reached the day prior to and sale day at Johnstone Auction Mart (306) 693-4715, Heritage Inn, Moose
Jaw (306) 693-7550 or my cell (406) 765-8820. Or, if you have any questions earlier, give us a call at our home numbers:
Barry (306) 969-4820 or Dean at (306) 731-3850. We welcome your visit to our farms anytime to see the bulls fi rsthand.
The coffee pot is always on. Join us Thursday night at the Heritage Inn in our hospitality room for some socializing.
We look forward to seeing you on Friday, March 5th at Johnstone Auction Mart. Join us for a great lunch prior to the sale
and also after the sale for refreshments and snacks.
Hope to see you at the sale.
Barry LaBatte
P.S. All the grandkids are doing great with the latest, Zayne LaBatte,
arriving in May of 2009. And at Christmas Santa said we will be
Grandpa and Grandma for the sixth time this summer. I’m sure they’ll
all be at the sale March 5th.
maternal brother to IPU T-Bone 13R, the great herdsire that has done so well for Bob Anderson
of Tymarc Simmentals in Alberta. The Jazz cow is a beautiful, very easy fl eshing Preferred
Zima daughter that just never misses. 21W’s sire, S-Paw Turbo Charged, was the $24,000
high seller that we purchased from Ron and Tammi of Southpaw Cattle Company at the 2008
Bull Spectrum Simmental Sale. He is doing a super job for us as you will see by his sire group
in our sale. Turbo Charged 21W himself is dark red, moderate framed, homozygous polled
and full of meat and muscle and going back to a great cow family. We would like to reserve
A cherry, cherry dark red KBR Exciter bull calf out of the only black Red Chief daughter
we have, and yes, she possesses a really nice udder as do all the Red Chief females.
Pocahontas 198P has a full brother on the ground already this year and he is red
again. This bull, being red out of two black parents, is a non-dilutor, so you can feel
confi dent breeding black cows to him and getting no gray calves. He will be easy to
fi nd sale day as he is very stylish.
This sale is dedicated to my dad, Herb LaBatte, who passed away last fall at the
ripe age of 95 years. He attended our sale last spring where this picture was taken.
Dad was a quiet, honest, very hardworking man. He loved farming, livestock and
family. He wasn’t just my dad, he was my best friend.
A good, honest Red Teddy son out of a Top Gun fi rst calf heifer. He is stylish, long, correct
and has a huge set of testicles, as do most of the Red Teddy calves.
Here he is, the heavyweight of the 2009 calf crop. This guy had an actual weaning weight of
1120 lbs. I believe this is the heaviest bull that we have ever had at weaning time. His Big Sky
mother did quite a job raising him. He is super deep, thick, cherry red colored and has a super
disposition. He is sired by the $33,000 Red Mercedes bull that we purchased as the high seller
at the 2007 TNT Bull Sale, the same sale we purchased Accelerator at. These two bulls have
done quite a job for us. With Red Deck – Bodybuilder – Gunner – Big Sky in his pedigree, he
should raise a great set of females and his bull and steer calves should be phenomenal.
Red Sapphire 58S has an exceptional bull calf in the sale again this year. Her last
year’s bull calf sold to Vince Stephenson of Ker-Kain Farms at Shaunavon, SK for
$6,250. Vince runs one of the really good operations in southern Saskatchewan and
buys only top bulls. This Accelerator son is just like the bull Vince bought last year;
he’s full of meat, muscle, hair and lots of top and rib in him. He would sire exceptional
replacement females and standout steer calves.
This powerful Beef Maker son has been a standout since birth. He’s a very interesting bull,
being line bred, Ribeye on the top and bottom of his pedigree, that’s where some of the
power comes from. His sire, Beef Maker, is very popular in the U.S., combining calving ease,
performance and carcass quality all in one package and the word is his females are making
exceptional young cows. 47W himself is dark red, long and deep, good haired and when you
stand behind him, is full of top, butt and nuts, and he is smooth polled. He will be DNA tested
by sale day for homozygous polled. We only had seven DNA kits when we weaned and will
have some more bulls tested by sale day. We would like to reserve the right to collect 100
straws of semen for in herd use only on 47W.
We believe we have a heck of a good group of blaze faced bull calves on offer this year
and 166W will just add to the quality of that group. Solid colored, blaze faced calves are
becoming very popular in the auction mart and especially in the replacement females.
Accelerator 166W is off a real good Bodybuilder cow, that herself is blaze faced and
has a great udder and is very easy fl eshing.
Just ask manager Gary Rairdan what he thinks of him. We ourselves kept a semen interest in
and dimension in his calves as can be seen by his progeny in this year’s sale. Accelerator 170W
Selling 3 transplant full brothers
A true sale feature again with three full brothers sired by the $45,000 KBR Exciter 758T bull and
out of our matron super cow, IPU Red Pocahontas 52N. This cow just does it year after year. In
last year’s sale her six Accelerator sons sold for just under a $10,000 average, highlighted by the
222U bull that sold for $21,500 to Maxwell Simmentals. In our 2008 sale her son, IPU Roughrider
2T, sold for $15,500 to Maple Lake Stock Farms in Manitoba. And in our 2007 sale she raised our
high selling bull, IPU Red Touchdown 32S, selling to Kopp Farms for $19,500. And these bulls have
gone on and really worked for their new owners. These three Exciter sons are equally as good. Two
are black and one is red. The KBR Exciter bull is heterozygous black and homozygous polled, so
when using on a red cow you can get either black or red. We have three full sisters to these bulls
in our keeper pen and they are awesome. You be the judge on sale day; these three bulls are full
of meat, muscle, guts, testicles, hair and have great dispositions. We feel any one of these bulls
can go out and raise a great calf crop for the commercial and purebred breeders. We would like to
This is just an outstanding 7/8 bull that is a twin to a heifer who in her own right was a
really good calf. He has the length, depth, muscle, hair and is structurally very correct.
What a set of calves he would sire out of some black Angus cows giving them more
performance, natural muscle and carcass value. 4W is homozygous black by pedigree
and is highly probable to be homozygous polled.
a good one. Out of a really good black blaze faced ½ Fleck cow who has a super udder,
lots of rib and capacity. She’s one of our top black cows. He’s stamped just like the rest of
I don’t know if we’ve ever used a black bull who leaves as good a haircoat as KBR Exciter
This polled Maddox son would make a real calving ease bull. Maddox himself has really
calved easy for us and I would highly recommend him on heifers. 80W is a little fi ner boned
bull and with an 84 pound birth weight, would be a real calving ease sire. He is also many
generations polled and is high percentage Fleckvieh.

20 Open Heifers
We are again consigning a good group of 20 open replacement heifers for this
year’s sale. When Wilf was here in January to take bull pictures, we did not
have our heifers picked out for the sale and defi nitely ran out of time to have
them done if we would have had them sorted. These heifers won’t be highly
fi tted, but will go on to make some real good brood cows. We’re proud of
what some of these females have done for their new owners that have been
purchased out of our spring sale. Like the Red chief daughter that McIntosh
Livestock (Blair and Stephanie McIntosh) purchased out of this sale. They
have sold many high dollar progeny off of IPU Red Pocahontas 139M and she
now heads their donor program. We all know about the IPU Ms Ribeye 71N
cow that Robb Farms purchased for $4,000 through this sale. They have sold
over $100,000 of progeny off her and she remains one of the most powerful
and dominant cows in the breed. And the Mader’s from Carstairs, AB have
been great supporters of our sale and continue to have great success with the
progeny from these heifers. A heifer that old eagle eye Randy picked out of
our sale, was the dam of Mader P Royal Arms 36W, the $15,500 super red
bull that sold at Checkers ‘09 to Perkins, Conray and Triple R Simmentals of
Manitoba. Like I said, these heifers aren’t going to be over fi tted, but there are
some really good heifers selling.
Full Fleckvieh. Here’s
a young, smooth polled
full Fleckvieh bull that
we like better every
day. He’s very colorfast,
smooth made, lots of rib and mothered by just an excellent Houston cow that produced one of our
high sellers last year, the great Laredo son, 62U, that sold to Rendezvous Farms in Manitoba.
Ms Houston 25R has just an absolute perfect udder and just calved the other day, having a dark
red Romano heifer calf. This young bull with his smoothness, should really calve well and his
progeny should be very saleable.
An end of February Mercedes daughter that we are really high on. Her mother was in
Robb Farms’ showstring in 2006 and entered in the People’s Choice show at Farm Fair
where she was selected one of the top heifers and was the pick of the winning member.
We purchased this heifer privately after the show for quite a bit of money, as we really liked
her. Well here’s her fi rst heifer calf and this young heifer, we think, is going to be a really
good one like her mother.
A real feature Red Ace son that has been a standout from day one. We are extremely proud to
offer a calf like this for sale. He exemplifi es the type we strive to produce. He is hard to fault.
He’s loaded with hair, super testicle development, has a good temperament, is structurally
correct and moves out very well. His overall mass is sure to impress you. He is extremely stout
made, with rib, top, depth and a heavily muscled, deep rear quarter second to none and take
note of his birthdate, just a March 4th calf. Have a look at his EPD’s; they are above average
in every category and as balanced as they come. His dam is one of our favorite young cows
that has a very bright future. Red Dawg is a true sale feature!

475W’s dam, 79M, is an ideal type female. She is moderate framed with excellent rib
460W is an impressive 738T son that will be popular come sale day. His sire, Wheatland
Bull 738T, is our senior red herdsire who has truly exceeded our expectations.
His calving easy is simply hard to fi nd and is the result of extremely short gestations
of his progeny. 738T’s calves consistently come 3 to 7 days early, get up, nurse and
then grow, grow, grow. 460W himself is put together a lot like his sire. He is long
spined, deep throughout with extra volume, good testicle development and extremely
well muscled. If you believe consistency is a measure of good genetics, take note of
his dam’s production record. This is our 5th year consigning to the LaBatte Bull and
Female Sale and she will have sold a bull in four of those fi ve sales. Shame on her for
having a heifer calf in 2008 or she would be 5 for 5. Each of the previous bull calves
to come through this sale have been right up with our sellers and they have sold to
fall and winter. He is an extremely smooth made calf that is hard to fault. He possesses
that extra wide top, extra volume and impressive muscle expression. He has loads of
hair, is extremely easy doing and structurally very correct. His dam is one of our very
best cows. She produced my high selling bred heifer to sell through the Simmsational
Sale two years ago purchased by Lee Stillborn of Pheasantdale Simmentals and last
year a bull sold through this sale to David Yandel. Rambler;s pedigree is loaded with
consistency and our very best genetics. We believe he is going to be a great one. A sale
feature that will have a lot of friends sale day.

Here is a powerful son of Wheatland 680S and he is a good one. He is the youngest
bull in our offering. However, he displays tremendous performance and muscle mass
for a calf of his age. He is a typical 680S calf; they all have that extra volume, hip
and hair. 518W also possesses that good wide top and overall stoutness that is so
important in today’s industry. We are very high on this calf and we feel he is going to
be one of the real good ones.
If you are looking for a black bull to add performance, pounds and a little size to your
calf crop, then 38W is the one for you. He is sired by our senior herdsire, BDS Rustler
544R, who just keeps producing the good ones. 38W is long bodied, wide topped and
has a big wide hip. 38W is backed by one of our leading black donor females, X-T
Miss Destiny 73K. 73K has really done it all for us. She has produced several high
selling females for us and two high selling bulls, one selling to Blair Stock Farms and
two years ago, right through this very sale, Neil Carson purchased 3D Trustin 47T.
He is extremely happy with his purchase and reports his calves came easy and look
awesome. I mention this because 38W reminds me so much of 47T. And for those
who will remember 47T, you are sure to agree. 38W is a solid black, polled bull with
small button scurs with an extremely bright future.
