1147 Walter Lamb verdigris bronze patio chair ottoman
(10.25’’ x 20’’ x 18’’), 2 pcs, est:$800/1200
Note: Little is known about Walter Lamb other than that he was based in Hawaii in
the first half of the 20th century, but his work has become increasingly sought after
by today’s collectors, as many contemporary designers focus on sustainable design
by using discarded or waste materials. Either from a desire to salvage and reuse
or a simple need for any available materials with which to create, Lamb scavenged
bronze and copper piping and cotton cord from sunken naval ships after the bombing
of Pearl Harbor. He formed from these recovered materials what has become his
signature series of outdoor furniture and a paradigm of mid-20th century California
design. The unique and wonderful characteristic of these original pieces, aside
from their grace and minimalism, is the metal’s beautiful green patina from outdoor
exposure that leaves no marks on cement or wooden surfaces as it ages. Lamb
worked for the Pasadena firm of Brown Jordan which had purchased the patent for
his work circa 1945. They continued to produce his designs until the 1970s, using
newly manufactured materials after the supply of harvested ship parts had been
depleted. Provenance: Property from a San Marino Estate. Condition: Structurally
sound. General marks, scratches, rubbing and weathering to surfaces. Chair- height
of seat: 13.5’’, width of seat: 22’’, depth of seat: 22’’. Webbing possibly replaced with
