Aborti<strong>on</strong>. Daughters <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> divorced parents have more aborti<strong>on</strong>s than the<br />

daughters <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> n<strong>on</strong>-divorced parents, according to a Finnish study. 129<br />

J. <strong>Children</strong>’s Increased Trouble in Romantic Relati<strong>on</strong>ships<br />

Trust in Relati<strong>on</strong>ships. Parental divorce <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>ten leads to low trust am<strong>on</strong>g<br />

children, 130 and those who casually date exhibit “the str<strong>on</strong>gest effects <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> parental<br />

divorce, suggesting that the repercussi<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> parental divorce may be in place<br />

before the young adults form their own romantic relati<strong>on</strong>ships.” 131 <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> divorce <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

their parents makes dating and romance more difficult for children as they reach<br />

adulthood. Parental divorce horrifies young adults’ heterosexual relati<strong>on</strong>ship<br />

experiences though the c<strong>on</strong>necti<strong>on</strong> is more evident for women than for men,<br />

according to <strong>on</strong>e study. 132<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> effects carry into adulthood. When compared with women from intact<br />

families, women from divorced families also reported less trust and satisfacti<strong>on</strong> in<br />

romantic relati<strong>on</strong>ships. 133 <strong>Children</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> divorced parents fear being rejected, and a<br />

lack <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> trust frequently hinders a deepening <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> their relati<strong>on</strong>ship. 134 One study<br />

showed that individuals whose parents divorced were more likely than individuals<br />

whose parents remained married to believe that relati<strong>on</strong>ships were beset by<br />

infidelity and the absence <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> trust, and they were also more likely to believe that<br />

relati<strong>on</strong>ships should be approached with cauti<strong>on</strong>. 135<br />
