enduring and permanent, 144 are less likely to insist up<strong>on</strong> a lifel<strong>on</strong>g marital<br />

commitment, 145 and are less likely to think positively <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> themselves as parents. 146<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>se attitudinal differences am<strong>on</strong>g children <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> divorced parents are noticeable<br />

even as early as kindergarten. 147 <strong>Children</strong> from divorced families are more tolerant<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> divorce than are children from intact families, though this is <strong>on</strong>ly likely if their<br />

parents had remarried. Without remarriage, the effect <strong>on</strong> their views <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> divorce<br />

was not significant. 148 <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> mothers’ accepting attitudes toward divorce causes<br />

more children to be accepting <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> divorce themselves. 149 <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>se positive attitudes<br />

towards divorce affect not <strong>on</strong>ly likelihood <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> divorce, but also overall relati<strong>on</strong>ship<br />

quality.<br />

After c<strong>on</strong>trolling for age, high levels <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> post-divorce interparental c<strong>on</strong>flict are<br />

associated with less positive views <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> marriage am<strong>on</strong>g adolescents. 150 One study <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

adolescents after a parental divorce reported that many children fear that their<br />

future marriages will lack love, trust, or communicati<strong>on</strong>, and that they will be<br />

beset by infidelity, c<strong>on</strong>flict, or abuse. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g>y also worry that their marriages will<br />

fail or that their spouse will aband<strong>on</strong> them, 151 a finding comm<strong>on</strong> to another study<br />

published that year (2008). 152<br />

In her study <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> children <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> divorced parents from Marin County, California,<br />

Judith Wallerstein found that the children <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> divorced parents still had persistent<br />

anxiety about their chances <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a happy marriage a decade after their parents’<br />

divorce. This anxiety interfered with their ability to marry well: Some failed to<br />

form satisfying romantic ties, while others rushed impulsively into unhappy<br />
