emergencies. 274 <strong>Children</strong> whose parents divorce are also more likely to c<strong>on</strong>tract<br />

cancer <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the upper aerodigestive tract, the esophagus, anus, pancreas, lungs, and<br />

cervix. <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> authors add, “<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> results show that <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>fspring <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> divorced parents<br />

have increased cancer risks at tobacco-related, alcohol-related and sex-related<br />

sites.” 275 A Swedish study showed that young men with divorced parents had a<br />

slightly heightened risk <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> hospitalizati<strong>on</strong> and significantly increased risk <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

mortality. 276<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> child <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> divorced parents has a higher risk <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> premature death. 277 According<br />

to <strong>on</strong>e study, parental divorce before the age <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 21 is associated with a mortality<br />

risk increase <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 44 percent 278 and a lifespan shortened by an average <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> 4.5<br />

years. 279 A child’s mortality risk increases when his parents’ divorce occurs before<br />

reaching age four. 280<br />

B. Increased Emoti<strong>on</strong>al and Psychiatric Burdens<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Divorce</str<strong>on</strong>g> wreaks havoc <strong>on</strong> the psychological stability <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> many children. 281 A<br />

ranking generated by seventh and eighth grade students through a study in the<br />

late 1980s ranked parental divorce as the third most stressful life event <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a list <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

125 life events or experiences. Parental divorce was <strong>on</strong>ly ranked as less stressful<br />

than the death <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> a parent or close family member. 282 Furthermore, the<br />

psychological effects <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> divorce are persistent: <strong>Children</strong> from divorced families<br />
