12th Annual Holiday C
Hosted by Arizona Karting Associati
Eddie Bonine
Brady Labree
Brittany McGuire
For twelve straight years Arizona Karting
Association (AKA) has hosted the
Holiday Classic. The “Classic” is by far
the west’s most prestigious dirt speedway event and their
coveted glass bowl is truly an addition to anyone’s trophy
case. What I love about this event is that speedway racing
is not near as popular in the western states as sprint racing,
but the only portion of this event that still remains is the
speedway. Originally this event had the sprinters next door
at Formula K and the road racers down the road at PIR,
but no more. Last year Terry Riggins and his Great Lakes
SKUSA crew took race operations for this event over,
bringing with him AMB scoring and a brighter future
for AKA. The previous race director drove away many
entrants and racers are just now returning to this great
facility. This year’s entries were nowhere near a record,
but a steady improvement from year’s past. Rain soaked
the oval on Wednesday night and into Thursday morning,
but the track crews did a fine job of preparing the track
surface for racing. Friday brought with it more rain and
it took a while to recover, but racing ended before 9:00
p.m. Saturday and Sunday were two picture perfect days
of racing in the Arizona desert and the drivers from as far
north as Canada really appreciated the mild temperatures.
Race officials steadily brought the racing line down as
conditions improved, with the fastest race laps being
posted on Sunday. Mike Colgrove in the 2-Cycle Open
on
200cc Stock class ran a blistering 11.071 lap, good enough
to claim the unofficial title of fastest at the Classic.
With nearly 40 classes scheduled for the four days
of racing it was no surprise that many drivers posted
multiple wins. Eddie Bonine was king of the Classic with
the results showing him as a triple winner for the event.
Bonine posted victories in 4-Cycle Open, Stock Animal
Heavy, Stock Animal Super Heavy, but he ran up front
in every class he entered. The Classic has a pea pick, two
heats and a main race format so most of the day is spent
racing, not qualifying.
Bonine got things going early on the first day working
his was around Chad Brassfield in heat one of the 4-Cycle
Open class. Heat two went more his way, with a flag-toflag
win. The final was right on track, starting up front and
finishing there as well. Chris Rhein ran solidly in second
place for most of the event, but was passed by Stephen
Chase on the last lap, settling for third place, some six
seconds back of Bonine. Day two was also a successful
one for Bonine as his quest for Animal dominance started.
Thomas Parker was the first driver to knock Bonine from
the top position, but unfortunately it was only in the heat
race. Bonine landed a win and a second place finish in
Stock Animal Heavy before starting the final from the
front row. Once again Bonine ran unchallenged for the
win, but this time Parker, Andrew Hays, and Jeff Hybiak
remained within striking distance for some of the race. Any
efforts were for not, and Bonine posted his second win of
the week. Bonine got skunked on day three, with Stephen
Chase winning the ultra-fast Unlimited All-Stars. Bonine
was back on track for our final day of racing, once again
finding himself on top of the Animal podium. Thomas
Parker and Andrew Hays both won a Animal Super Heavy
heat race, setting up a great contest with Bonine in the
final. Parker and Hays went at it early in the 20-lap feature,
and it took a while for Bonine to join the hunt. Steadily
climbing his way from fifth place Bonine was able to make
the pass on Hays for second coming off of turn two. A few
laps later and he was on point again. Parker never gave up,
running with Bonine to the finish line a close second.
Five other drivers managed to post double wins during
this long week of racing. The Kennedy boys from the great
white north each picked up a pair while our friend from
down under, Paul Chambers did the same. Mike Colgrove
and Bud Grossenbaucher were the only multi-winners
who took home both a 2 and 4-cycle trophy, Colgrove in
seniors and Grossenbaucher in juniors.
Patrick Hinkle
Cody Hybiak
Both Mike Colgrove’s wins came on Sunday, the final
day of racing. In the ultra-fast 2-Cycle Open 200cc Stock
class he bested the field by five seconds in both heat races,
setting him up for a flag-to-flag win in the 20-lap final.
While Colgrove ran away with it, Nathan High and Paul
Chambers battled for the runner’s up position. 4-Cycle
Stock Heavy was a bit more difficult task with Brady
Labree coming up with a win in heat #2. Labree controlled
the pace of the final early on, and maintained his slim lead
through the midpoint of the contest. Colgrove made his
move late in the race after a lengthy yellow gave him time
to plan his attack.
A pair of McGuires topped the charts in 2-Cycle Jr.
2 Heavy’s first heat race, but a yellow flag plagued heat
two saw Bud Grossenbaucher emerge as the race winner.
Grossenbaucher took that momentum with him into the
final, turning in a dominating performance. Grossenbaucher
pulled out a near five-second victory over Cody Downs
and an impressive 11.6 second against third place finisher
and first day winner Brittany McGuire. Grossenbaucher
didn’t see the top of the podium again until the final day
of the Classic in 4-Cycle Super Jr. 2. Nick Ellenberger
led the three-way train for the win in heat race #1 with
Grossenbaucher and Sean Kennedy in tow. Heat two went
down in the same fashion, but this time second and third
changed positions. The final was a barnburner with the
lead trio clearly the class of the field. Ellenberger led the
first few circuits, but Grossenbaucher was on fire and made
his move in turn three, securing the top position. Kennedy
lost a spot on the start and it took him a few laps to catch
back up to the leaders. He didn’t quite have the pace of
the front pair, but Grossenbaucher had enough for all of
them, grabbing his second Holiday Classic bowl of the
long weekend.
No doubt that the name Kennedy brings terror to
many at the Holiday Classic. There seems to be a limitless
number of them, and they all run up front. For the past few
years this family has brought back with them a lot of trophy
glass for sure. The 2006 Holiday Classic was no exception
as both Sean and Thomas posted a pair of wins. Thomas,
the senior driver of the bunch, got it done on the first day in
Stock Animal Medium, but his more impressive win came
on day three in Stock Medium. Although Aaron Miller
and Jeff Hybiak gave chase, Animal Medium belonged to
Kennedy, going three for three on the day. Stock Medium
was a different story, splitting the class into two flights for
heat racing. Stephen Chase, and Kennedy each won a heat
race, but Brady Labree once again was the fastest, winning
both his heats. Labree was shot from a canon to start the
final as Mike Colgrove slotted into second place. An
early yellow lasted a whopping eight laps, and Kennedy
was coming through the pack. It took twelve laps for the
Canadian to put his blue #20 out front, and once again the
Page 12 Go Racing Magazine January 2007

maple leaf was able to keep all others a bay for the rest of
the final. Labree had another great drive to finish in second
place, while Andrew Hays moved up into third.
4-Cycle Jr. 2 Heavy and Medium were Sean Kennedy’s
classes. Heavy took a little effort as Nick Ellenberger
swept the heat races. Kennedy got a great start in the final
and was able to keep Ellenberger at bay for all 15 laps.
Kennedy out paced the field and Ellenberger was stuck
fighting for second place with Jacob Stone. Medium was a
bit more challenging as Derek Sell, Stone, Alex Johnson,
Ellenberger, and Alex Valencia all had the speed to win.
This race was nearly out of hand as lap after lap was
completed under yellow. Four different drivers led this
thing with Kennedy cycling his way to the front with only
a few laps remaining. Kennedy had just enough to squeak
out the win over Sell by just a tenth.
The Aussie, Paul Chambers, started out the event
with a couple of wins in the 2-Cycle 100cc Super Stock
classes. Chambers, always a factor was in great form the
first two days, but as the week wore on he was unable to
duplicate his success of the opening days. Chambers put
the pedal to the metal in Thursday’s Super Stock Light
class winning heat #2 after Pete Gresh, Jr. won the first
heat. Chambers was able to break out a small advantage
over Nathan High in the final. High wasn’t a factor in the
Stock Heavy class, but Aaron Miller and AJ Miller were.
They were problematic in the heats, but by the time the
final was afoot, Chambers had found a little extra speed
and brought it home for a second win on the week.
Two and three were magic numbers for some, but out
west just winning one is a triumph at the Holiday Classic.
Other notable winners for the event were; Rory Everson,
Brittany McGuire, Tyler Mecl, Jacob Stone, Charles
Eckman, Anthony Platt, Kyle Niquette, Bailie Mihocko,
Brady Labree, Nathan High, Cody Hybiak, Dickey Dudd,
Stephen Chase, Chris Rhein, Nick Parker, and Patrick
Hinkle. It has to be noted that seven wins this week were
scored by a kart with the #74 on the side. Four different
drivers piloted a #74 to victory lane, and that seems like
more than a coincidence to me.
You have to say this event is certainly on the rebound
and a lot of that success comes from stepping up into the
current century of karting with a race director who knows
what they are doing, is approachable to the competitors, and
brings with him a couple of key people. Finally electronic
scoring, hallelujah, “how’d we ever get by without it”?
WKA Grand Nationals
Justin Coplen
Buddy Long noticed what a beautiful day it was here at the
World Famous Adams Kart Track in Riverside, California
for day one of the George Kugler Manufacturers Cup West
presented by ekartingnews.com. Thank you Captain Obvious, there is
a good reason we live here…78 degrees and sunny out in December.
Let’s take a look around the map today and see what it was like at
other fine karting establishments shall we? Newcastle had a low of 24,
a high of 44, and clear skies. USA International rang in at a 39 for a
high, a low of 28 and partly cloudy. Daytona was pretty nice out with
the mercury topping the charts with a high of 72, a low of 58, and
rainy. So we are pretty lucky to live in a place where cold is 65 degrees.
With beautiful skies above them, and a great track under them, So Cal
Sprinters hosted the final round of the series, the WKA Grand Nationals
West. As has been the case all season long, entries have been growing
with each passing event. This was no exception as participation grew to
the mid 80s for the day, beating the best weekend total set in Phoenix
last month. With plenty of classes on the board for tomorrow we expect
to finish the weekend around the 130 mark.
Raquel Martinez was the only driver to post multiple wins today,
scoring one in HPV Cadet Jr. and in the Cadet Junior Sportsman final
#1. HPC Cadet led the way for their main event, starting sixteen drivers.
Martinez was the pole sitter, but a crash starting the prefinal left her
and others well behind the prefinal winner, Austin Barnes. Barnes held
the point for the first few laps in the fourteen lap final, but Martinez
was coming quickly. Barnes never lost sight of the prize and shadowed
Martinez to the finish line. Jacob Will started well back in 10 th and
was the fastest kart on the track, but he ran out of laps before he could
challenge the leaders, settling for third.
Martinez started the Cadet Jr. Sportsman prefinal from the pole, but
again Austin Barnes came up roses in the heat race. The final came down
to Martinez and Starrantino, with Luis Tyrrell running a close third.
Starrantino was able to make his move and hold it until the end, but a
weight was left off after last minute seat change, ending Starrantino’s
day with a DQ at the scales. Martinez took the win with Tyrrell coming
home in second. Misty Balser had a solid run, leading the main pack of
karts to finish in third.
HPV Junior Lite was all Joey Licata Jr, with Eric Gunderson, and
Connor DePhillippi thrown in for good measure. Licata scored the pole
and the prefinal win, but an eager DePhillippi sat alongside him to start
the final. DePhillippi got shuffled back on the start, ending any real
chance of winning. He fought hard for 3 rd place with Justin Coplen, but
it was Coplen who stood next to Licata and Gunderson on the podium.
Gunderson gave chase and made every effort to get around Licata, but
today Licata and his trusty #17 brought it home for the win.
Little Lloyd Mack returned to the seat for TAG this weekend. The
Mack family, Big Lloyd, Little Lloyd, and other son, George are near
legends in these parts to say the least, but when you throw in a Bush, an
Adkins, and Billy Cleavelin you really do have a field from back in the
day. Mike Mantel and Cory Pollock represented the Pepsi generation
and things got heated early in the prefinal. The final was shaping up to
be quite the battle, but it only lasted a few laps before the excitement
was gone. Mantel got the hole shot, but Cleavelin was glued to his
bumper. Contact between the two leaders in the esses dropped Mantel
well back into the pack and sprung Cleavelin and Mack. A thrown chain
cost Cleavelin his chance at the gold, leaving the Mack attack to run
all alone for the win. Mantel kept things going for a while before a
mechanical failure ended his day too. Daniel Parras fought hard early
for every position and it paid off late in the race for him with a super
second place finish. Ralph Bush let his local knowledge work for him,
landing a position on the podium in third.
Sheila Bukamier-Nash set the pace in Yamaha Senior Sportsman
Lite qualifying, and backed up her pole with a win in the prefinal. The
final was anything but a cakewalk for her, as former Adams employee,
Walee Waldron stepped up his game for the final. Peter Hearn finished
in third ahead of Stephen Hight, but neither was in the hunt for the win.
Waldron made his bid for the lead in the “Little Monza” corner, but both
Derek Zimmermann
Bukamier-Nash and Waldron led their fair share of this race. Nash was
able to put a few more years of experience to good use in the last few
laps and regain the top spot for the win.
The Yamaha Junior Supercan race was hectic from the get go with
many of the front-runners off in the dirt in turn one. Justin Coplen was
on fire and unstoppable, breezing through the dust and debris. Timmy
Bachman gave chase, but Coplen was too far gone to catch. A solid
performance by Dylan Nobile landed him third place, just finishing
ahead of Ryan Lee and Harley Owen.
HPV Lite got quite interesting in the final. Derek Zimmerman
qualified on pole and just beat Chris Freckleton in the prefinal. “Lil
Freck” as he’s known around here, spun on the warm-up lap in
true rookie fashion, but maintained his front row starting position.
Zimmerman and Freck battled in the early going, before settling into a
rhythm with Zimmerman inching away. David Lowe’s kart came in late
and he ran down Freck and attempted a last lap pass for second. Freck’s
no dummy and the pass didn’t stick, but they were two seconds back of
the winner Zimmerman at the finish. Tech got the better of Zimmerman
with an unfortunate clutch infraction. Freckleton was more than happy
to accept the WKA Grand National Eagle for his efforts. Lowe, of the
David variety finished in second place, while the Travis flavor of Lowe
came home in third.
ICC capped off the day, and twilight fell on the newly renamed
Adams Motorsports Park. Three drivers entered ICC, but only two
took the green flag. Eric Nelson had mechanical issues and retired
from competition leaving the SuperNats S1 runner up, Slava Prihodko
and good old Cameron Parsons. Well Parsons has been yearning for
people to race with this season and he got it in Slava. Slava is fast, and
Parsons’ goal was to hang with him long enough to learn something. A
mechanical failure halted Slava’s prefinal victory, but a clean start and
smooth driving in the final secured him the top position over Parsons.
Parsons held fast, but eventually Prihodko was able to gain quite a gap
over Parsons. Both drivers are hoping to see a few more ICC karts out
for tomorrow’s contest.
With day one over for the WKA West Grand Nationals, the crews
and drivers set their sights on Sunday’s Eagles to be won. Race director,
Kevin Williams celebrated his 41 st birthday at the track this weekend
Sheila Bukamier-Nash
David Lowe
and we hope it was a good one spent with family and friends. 41 Kevin?
Wow I remember when you turned 30 and I thought you were old then.
Special thanks to WKA’s own Randy Kugler who is posting results for
us throughout the day and keeping us up to date. Of course he couldn’t
be doing all that typing if Buddy Long wasn’t on hand doing all the
hard work. All the WKA staff and So Cal Sprinters staff will be back
at it again tomorrow bright and early for hopefully another beautiful
day. Forecast calls for possible rain showers, but it has stopped raining
already tonight so we might have some good luck for the final day
of the George Kugler Manufacturers Cup West season presented by
ekartingnews.com
Mother nature made me a liar today when overnight rains brought
near arctic temperatures to the Southland today; a high of 60 is just
no way to live. Fortunately, storm watch 2006 only dropped a little
precipitation and we were running under dry conditions all day for
the final event of the 2006 George Kugler Manufacturers Cup West
presented by ekartingnews.com. Solid participation in most of the
classes again today made for another exciting day of racing at the Adams
Motorsports Park. Near flawless execution by the So Cal Sprinters and
WKA staffs got us packed up and headed home by 16:30 today with
WKA Grand National Eagles in hand.
The cadet drivers once again got the ball rolling today, with Yamaha
1 Cadet leading things off. Raquel Martinez, the pride of Pico Rivera,
was the pole sitter, but once again the heat race saw turn one get crazy,
and once again Austin Barnes was there to land the prefinal win.
Although Barnes came up short for the second straight day, I really need
to tip my hat to him for such a strong run all weekend long. Martinez
showed great prowess and was one of the few drivers who made the
outside position work for her on the start. She and Barnes went side by
side through the scale house turn with Martinez crowding her way into
the lead. Barnes never gave up, while Misty Balser and Jacob Will gave
chase. Martinez crossed the finish line for her third Grand National win
with Barnes glued to her bumper. Balser made a late race move on Will
to land her on the podium in 3 rd .
Eric Gunderson led the charge of Yamaha Jr. Supercan Heavy
competitors with the only qualifying time dipping into the 47’s.
Gunderson kept up the pace in the prefinal barely nipping Dylan Nobile
Joey Licata Jr.
Page 20 Go Racing Magazine January 2007

Cameron Parsons
at the line. Nobile worked the flow of the outside line for a great start,
and Justin Coplen dropped in behind heading down into the sandbox
corner. Gunderson came away in third place and spent the rest of the
race trying to get around Nobile and Coplen. Coplen made his move on
Nobile to take the lead, but Gunderson was the fastest thing on track.
Sometimes being the fastest doesn’t win races, and this was one of those
times. Nobile stayed glued to the back of Coplen, not giving Gunderson
an inch to work with. Coplen brought home his second win of the
weekend with another great performance, this kid is on fire. Nobile and
Gunderson capped off the podium with their fine drives.
Sheila Bukamier-Nash and Walee Waldron continued the previous
day’s skirmish, this time in Yamaha Sr. Sportsman Heavy. The sandbox
didn’t go as planned for Waldron, as he spun collecting David Lowe in
the process. Bukamier-Nash sped off with what seemed to be an easy
win, while Lowe and Waldron found their way back on track. A blown
crank seal cost Bukamier-Nash her win as her trusty steed slowed to a
halt. Lowe ran down and passed Waldron for what would become the
race win, and the Grand National title.
The Cadet Junior Sportsman final #2 was the class we were all
waiting for and it was a barnburner from the get go. Raquel Martinez
was the pole sitter, besting the nineteen-kart field by three tenths.
Austin Barnes continued his trend of heat race wins; buy topping the
charts once more. Martinez was quick on the draw, and led entering
turn one with Luis Tyrrell, Sean Conyers, Haley Jenni, and Barnes.
Martinez and Tyrrell started to gap the field even though they traded
the lead a few times, but Barnes was stuck in traffic. Once Barnes broke
free he nearly ran down the leaders and turned the quickest lap of the
race in the process. He ran out of laps and was never able to make his
move. Martinez made her move heading down into “Little Monza” and
surprisingly Tyrrell didn’t put up much of a fight. We quickly learned
why; he was planning his run down the long Adams straight. Tyrrell
motored through “no man’s land” getting inside Martinez and drag
racing her to the line. Tyrrell ruined Martinez’s 4 for 4 by .002 of a
second for his first WKA Grand National win. It was a nail biter of a
finish and a great win for Tyrrell. Martinez took second in stride, still
wanting four Eagles instead of three, but always the sportsman. Barnes’
day ended just a few tenths back of the leaders with another spectacular
trip to the podium.
Terry Nash and Glen Parsons were the two Masters competitors and
they shared the track with Cameron Parsons in ICC. Nash’s home track
advantage was prevalent, but Parsons learned a lot by following the
local driver. Nash, even with a spin managed to bring this one home
without much of a problem. Cameron Parsons improved his lap times
from yesterday and finished first in ICC.
David Lowe posted the low time in HPV qualifying, but it was
Derek Zimmerman, or “Derelique”, as we just now learned, who led
them down to the finish in the prefinal. The final race of the 2006 season
didn’t have much action in the way of lead changes, but Matt Jones,
and Travis and David Lowe made the fight for second interesting. Jones
was relegated back to fourth as the Lowes went at it in the final laps.
Derelique was well up the road and had no tech issues today, making
for a much happier boy. Travis managed to beat out brother David for
second place, but both joined teammate Zimmerman on the podium.
So concluded the 2006 WKA George Kugler Manufacturers Cup
West presented by ekartingnews.com. It was certainly a year of learning,
a year of rebuilding, and a year of renewed dedication to the local racers.
Banquet plans are already underway and will be announced soon, as
well as next year’s schedule. Big things are to come for this series next
year. Expect to see entries continue to grow, coverage on ekartingnews.
9 th Annual Hawaii State
Karting Championships
It rained. And rained.
And rained.
With Oahu, Kauai and the Big Island of
Hawaii all generating national headlines
this past year due to terrible weather and
natural disasters, it’s perhaps not surprising that Maui
got its dose before 2006 concluded. And while it
may not have led to loss of life or front page status
in the Wall Street Journal or on CNN like on the
other islands, the bad timing did conspire in causing
unprecedented disruption at the Puunene racetrack
and its annual season-ending showcase event.
While karters practiced the Friday night before
as normally expected, the morning of Saturday,
December 3rd brought increasingly torrential
Wet enough for you?
By Earl Ma
downpours which quickly saturated the half mile
road course and disrupted the scheduled proceedings
for the 9 th edition of the Hawaii State Go-Karting
Championships. By mid-afternoon, with the skies
lightening but puddles everywhere and only a fraction
of the participants still tinkering in the pit area, the
Maui Go-Karters Association called it a day.
Unlike on the mainland where expecting any sort
of weather on race days is a given, the 50 th State’s
various karting organizations have historically never
formally sanctioned the use of rain tires; therefore few
competitors ever bother with buying them, let alone
use them in competition. So as conditions rapidly
deteriorated on Saturday morning, most karters
simply had to park their slick-shod machines. The
notable exceptions: SoCal’s Position One Motorsports
lineup, returning to Maui for its second straight year,
Aside from the terrible weather, the headline story
for the 2006 round centered around who did not make
the traditional trip to Puunene. Most noticable by
its collective absence was the Pacific Karting Club,
which has laid dormant since Oahu’s sole permanent
karting facility – in fact, the entire Hawaii Raceway
Park complex, with a legacy of drag, road and oval
racing dating back to 1965 – abruptly shut down
in early April amid the property being sold off for
commercial development purposes. PKC did in fact
have the last track date scheduled before the closure
– March 26 – but that likewise got washed away in its
entirety by rain. HRP unexpectedly remained open
for one more weekend of drag racing thereafter before
the gates shut for good, but PKC never received a
makeup date.
Since then PKC officials have steadily worked at
trying to secure a temporary facility elsewhere on
Oahu. But with participants largely inactive for the
remainder of the year (some HRP oval track regulars
actually moved to Las Vegas just so they could have
someplace to race), only one PKC-affiliated Oahu
family (Rene Cadiz and his two young sons) decided
to compete. Meanwhile MGKA experienced its
own dropoff in participation over the season as some
veteran members began showing up on race days
less and less. Among those conspicuously gone in
December was perennial podium finisher Jordan
Bianco, now halfway through his freshman year of
college at Oregon State. Despite placing third in the
Formula Y Heavy class at California Speedway’s
IKF 2-Cycle Sprint Grand Nationals and earning a
Screaming Eagle in August, semester finals meant
missing his first ever State Championships.
And while the number of individual participants
making the trip from the West Coast also shrank
compared to recent years, Position One made a
welcome sophomore appearance. After fielding three
entries in 2005 and selling off a couple chassis to
interested Maui customers, they returned with three
more drivers, a total of six karts and a full arsenal of
support personnel who unflinchingly walked the track
on Saturday even as raindrops continued belting the
tarmac.
Making a welcome return to the State Championships
after a few years away was 2004 Memo Gidley
Karting Clinic scholarship winner Greg Perrin, who
after collecting on his Jim Russell Racing School
prize has been concentrating his efforts on spending
his free weekends at Infineon Raceway and other
nearby West Coast haunts. Likewise, Leading Edge
Brander Pu’u
Gumpfer
head honcho Greg Bell returned after a two-year
hiatus, sandwiching his consultation track days within
a week-long solo vacation.
Even with the slightly smaller than normal starting
field and the Saturday postponement, the Friday night
crowd showed up bright and early Sunday morning
for an intensely condensed schedule – two hours
of open practice, two laps of qualifying and then
straight into the heats. With the track having dried
off overnight and overdue sunshine bringing Maui
back to life, conditions resembled any normal race
weekend in Puunene, but the constant threat of midafternoon
showers meant organizers could not take
their sweet time getting everyone on and off course
expediently. Subsequently all on-track activity went
off without a hitch, and even a small crowd of loyal
spectators turned out despite witnessing no traditional
opening ceremonies and having no trackside catering
truck available on the makeup date.
With the exception of the KT-100 Heavy class, the
overall winners wound up sweeping all three heats,
but by no means did that equate to a boring day
trackside. The trio of Tom Zaccagnini, Perrin and Jim
Schubert hotly contested the Parilla Leopard rounds,
generating by far the most ontrack
contact and the day’s only
spin, when Schubert looped
it entering the backstretch
as the leader during the
Page 28 Go Racing Magazine January 2007

Reis
second heat - moments after sneaking by Zaccagnini
and Perrin while they dive-bombed each other for
the top spot. Second generation participant Mikey
Howanic enjoyed a particularly good day, holding off
Position One’s Luis Martinez Jr. for the KT-100 Light
crown, then jumping into Bianco’s old Invader and
likewise dominating the 80cc Shifter category.
But Maui newcomer Gumpfer, a veteran of IKF
Junior 1 and TAG Cadet in the Cascade Regional
Series, may have been the revelation of the weekend
with his Seattle Karting Specialties-prepared ex-
Italian Motors Italkart. MGKA classified him as the
solo Parilla Gazelle class representative but let him
compete head-to-head with the three standard Junior
Sportsman entrants, including defending champion
Randel King and his feared Position One Avanti.
Alec’s downsized kart qualified just a second behind
King, comfortably earned the checkers for heats one
and three and scored a close second
in between.
Zaccagnini
The rains ultimately held off the rest of the afternoon
and allowed the awards ceremony and post-season
banquet – usually the sole events for Sunday – to
satisfactorily conclude the weekend as they should.
Unforseen catastrophe – outside of anyone’s control,
but potentially a huge loss for all nonetheless had it
rained all day Sunday as well – had been narrowly
averted, and Hawaii’s karting faithful breathed a
huge sigh of relief once the last flag fell. With the
Puunene track currently amounting to the only game
in town when it comes to regular organized karting
in the 50 th State, the landmark 10 th anniversary event
next December may prove particularly dramatic and
memorable.
If it doesn’t rain.
December 2006
SUPER ROK

The Living Daylights
With the tenth running of the Supernationals
in November under his belt, new Superkarts! USA
owner and ProKart Challenge founder Tom Kutscher
was looking forward to the start of the 2007 season.
After all, the series he created out of a passion for
the sport was about to launch its third full season,
and the pre-entry count was setting a record pace
the week prior the event. All signs were pointing to a
Race 1 blow out with a record attendance. All signs
were right.
Round one of SuperKarts! USA’s ProKart
Challenge was contested on Saturday January 6th at
Moran Raceway in Southern California under sunny,
clear, cool and somewhat windy conditions. 185
drivers participated, making for the largest event
ever contested at the Fullwood Kingdom according
to track owner Rocky Moran Jr.- who drove in the
TaG senior class. Moran Jr. was not the only hot
shoe in attendance, as professional drivers Alex
Barron and Arie Luyendyk Jr. also turned up to drive
in this event.
Kart pro’s Lorenzo Mandarino, Fritz Leesman
and Jon Allen also showed- and showed the way in
the S1 class with stellar performances on their KLS/
GP chassis. It was a motor builder extravaganza as
longtime series fixture Darcy DeCoste of DDR made
the trip down as did Swedetech Engineering for the
first time to lend customer support. The new Hi Tech
crew were even there with the stable of 18 motors!
Add presence from the Hitchhiker Kart Stand crew
and Courtney Concepts, who are providing the spec
Motul Kart 2T oil for the event as well as racers from
the Pacific Northwest, Northern California, Colorado,
Arizona and Utah, and the tuners to support them,
Page 34 Go Racing Magazine January 2007

and wonderers were wondering if PKC’s first one
in 07 was a national event! You can potentially call
a PKC race a regular stop on many pro’s agenda,
and some already are as the second stop at Moran
in February is seeing additional pro drivers coming
down.
The racing was, as usual, tremendous- albeit in
a shortened form. A scoring glitch
caused by the timing loop coming
up cost us a few minutes on the day,
but the number of entries affected
the lengthy race program more. Any
hope of finishing the day with 15 lap
mains lost, and in hindsight cutting the
second heat race might have been the better idea.
With the limited winter daylight on hand; we play the
hand we are dealt, and a first for PKC developed: the
forced shortening of the main events. Some classes
were cut down to four or five laps, and even that
wasn’t enough, as the final main of the day ran into
near darkness.
TaG Senior was first up with an eight lap main.
Grant Hebner and Lloyd Mack diced it out up front
and it was Hebner who found himself hoisting the first
place hardware in the end. Mack finished second,
with a strong effort. Steven Barros had a brilliant drive
from sixth on the grid, but a tech infraction cost him
a great finish. Notable non-factors were AJ Whistler
who made the drive from AZ only to DNF after four
laps and Rocky Moran Jr. whose early speed fell off
in the main.
TaG Master saw the return and dominance of the
crafty veteran Jerry Henderson. Henderson drove
six laps untouched from the pole, not even looking
back over his shoulder. Erik Jackson made a late
pass to steal second from Rob Logan.
The PKC TaG drivers deserve special mention,
as the racing in the two classes is simply the
best in California for the class. From the racers
commitment, to the professionalism of the tuners,
and support staff- the TaG contingent rules. Plus
they make for great photo ops as every time they
took the green turn one was a mess. That falls back
into the commitment level of the racers I’m sure.
S1 winner Lorenzo Mandarino put not one wheel
wrong throughout the day, taking the win over GP
/ KLS Racing teammate Fritz Leesman. Slava
Prikhodko, last year’s champ fought all day and
settled for third in the speediest class of the day.
From the get-go Mandarino was pedal down and
pulling away.
Combined with S1 for the day, the G1 class was
once again dominated by series champ PP Masto.
Sergio Machado was a mere 1.165 back in second
and Phoenix AZ hot shoe Nick Firestone was just
over a second back of Machado. Both classes ran
only a six lap main, good for the old Masters guys,
but even they can go longer than six laps.
The S2 and G2 pairing was a mere five lap affair
and in S2 Craig Caringella brought home the trophy.
Steve Brown and Blake Reed rounded out the top
three.
In G2 Wally Wright scored his first PKC victory
over Dan Aspesi. Craig Cutler who had the fastest
lap of the class in final was third. Blair Chang, part
owner of SoCal Kartsport was speedy all weekend
only to suffer bad luck in the final with a DNF.
S3, the spec class for advanced drivers is
a premier class if there ever was one, and the
competition was fierce! Divided in a light and heavy
it can get a bit busy in the timing and scoring area.
Recently married Alex Barron was on hand and
unlike PKC races in the past failed to dominate in
his usual fashion. That alone says something for
the strength of the field, namely Connor DePhillippi.
DePhillippi gave Barron fits all day and the youngster
was lightning fast until the final when he got crashed
out early on. Barron, who started from the front row
battled hard but the four lap sprint race didn’t go his
way, as he too was knocked back with DePhillippi.
Bobby Legate, who clearly got good in the off season
fought hard for an eventual second place finish, but
it was Nick Halen who took the checkered. Halen
started the race fifth and with a beat up side pod
scored the race win. With only five laps to get the
job done, real estate was premium and leaning on
people was the only way to make passes from first
back to last. Jeff Littrell had a strong drive, surviving
the sprint to finish third.
In S3 Heavy it was Fernando Diaz for the
win- followed by Marty Henderson and Grant
Westmoreland. Henderson and Westmoreland
picked up a few positions on track, but they were
unable to gain any ground on Diaz who finished a
couple positions ahead of them.
S4 ran their main in near darkness, then in damn
near darkness and it was another exciting four
lapper. At least four laps around Moran is a long
time compared to four laps at Amago. Laps didn’t
matter in S4 light, as newcomer Patrick Cushenberry
drove from pole to finish in the top spot, as did Kyle
Zirkle for second and Mike MClaran for third. Billy
Musgrave was the only driver in the top five to even
gain a position, passing Marc Segal early/middle/
late (same lap) in the race.
In S4 Heavy it was Rob Whitley in first, Scott
Clark in second and Brian Bender in third. All three
Page 36 Go Racing Magazine January 2007

drivers ran well up into the pack of light racers. They
say rain is the great equalizer, but I think an unlit track
might have the same effect. Only one kart separated
the lead trio of heavy drivers, and had we gone the
distance it might even have been a great fight for the
win.
In all seriousness PKC offers some great racing
action, and it was unfortunate to make light out of a
dark situation. Live and learn. All those entries are a
wonderful thing to have, and keeping them happy
will be a task worthy of the PKC staff. Round two
of the PKC (Moran backwards next month) should
go much better with one under their belt already for
the year. It should be said that the heat races were
very exciting. The Tag classes kept us on our feet for
every start, and it was something to see Alex Barron
chasing Connor DePhillippi down the corkscrew in
the Stock Moto class. Those are the memories that
both of them will have with them for a long time to
come, and isn’t that what it’s all about?
Arrow’s success around the world continues at the
2006 Toyota All Japan SL Kart Challenge, not only
with Matthew Wall’s victory, but also with Matthew
Hamilton’s third place. Both were using the
renowned Arrow AX8 28/30 (designed specifically
for Yamaha classes) – proving again that Arrow
leads the world both on and off the track!
4 Hour R
The second annual Rotax 4-Hour Enduro took place
at Moran Raceway in Beaumont, California on
Saturday the 13 th of January under clear but chilly
skies. Friday it snowed at the popular southern California track
proving that Al Gore may in fact be right about global warming
bringing on a new ice age. The frozen stuff didn’t last long,
but the arctic chill that came with it lingered on all weekend,
with highs in the upper 30’s. Racing kicked off at 12:30 but
as the afternoon wore on the temperatures started to fall. The
race ended with air temp a chilly 37 degrees. Fast teams hit
speeds of 70 mph putting the wind chill factor at a frosty 22
degrees. Besides all the pressure of driving the last leg of the
Enduro, the kart pilots experienced bone-numbing cold not
usually associated with the local area. With one hand under
their butts and the other on the wheel, many drivers brought
this one home the hard way. Regardless of the cold, racing was
hot, I mean really hot. After four hours of intense action the
race was decided on the final pit stop with the winners finishing
just 12 seconds ahead of second place. To top things off the
event coordinators scheduled the event to run Moran Raceway
backwards, cutting down the advantage many drivers might
have. Practice time was limited by driver’s motivation to be
in the cold and by early day mechanicals, so for most it was a
“learn as you go” kind of event.
Twenty-five teams pea picked for starting positions with
Curtis Cooksey and team Acceleration Karting drawing the top
spot. Many rivals were pleased to see team Acceleration start
there since Cooksey is known for his aggressive driving style
and at least this way they would know where he was. With the
electric start on the Rotax it meant that drivers were going to
be forced to run the 50-yard dash before jumping in their karts,
starting the Rotax, and heading off into turn one. It doesn’t
seem that hard, but I can’t remember the last time I ran the
50, and drivers ranged in age from 14-67 on the starting line.
It was too close to call as to who got to the kart first, but the
#55 Newport Motorsports was the first one into turn one, and
led the first lap around the circuit in the backwards fashion.
Newport’s lead didn’t last long as Team FTK made their way
to the point. Team Proven too was on the move, making their
way the only way they know how, and as we will later see that
was a little bit more than the law will allow.
As with most enduro races of this nature pits stops are key.
Good rules by SSC to keep the refueling rigs down to a five
gallon gas can meant all the racers were on an even playing
field in the pits. Fuel mileage was key and the longer you could
stay out the better you would be in the end. With every pit stop
you had to make a driver change and SP Race Team was one of
the first teams to stop. Unfortunately the choke caused an early
pit stop for them and they were now out of sequence with the
Page 42 Go Racing Magazine January 2007

otax Enduro
Moran Raceway
other competitors. This played into their hands later in the race
to keep them around the top of the scoring sheet. Most teams
were able to go around 55 minutes on fuel, but teams like SP
and Proven were able to get a full hour out of their machines.
Pit strategy was going to play a big part at the finish.
Proven kept the #37 kart up front for the remainder of
their first stint. FTK with Bonnier Moulton behind the
wheel, and Team America ran solidly in second and third,
but Team MSquared 2 was on the move. Proven was
the leader at the one-hour mark, but Team SP Racing
cycled into the lead as others pitted for fuel and air
pressure adjustments. Most of the second hour
belonged to FTK, leading most of those laps. Team
Jakson/2 Wild pulled themselves up into the hunt,
joining MSquared 2 and SP as the main rivals of FTK.
Team Proven fought the law and the law won on their
first pit stop. Joey Collins was held a minute in the pits
for speeding, costing them a lap and a half on the track,
but they were battling back slowly. Second round of pit
stops started and once again Team SP Racing was out
front. This time they were credited with leading at the
halfway mark of the race. MSquared 2 enjoyed a few
laps up top, but soon enough John Crow and FTK were
back to business in the first position. SP was now clearly
in the thick of things, and Proven had clawed their way
back up to third, but there were still a lot of laps left in this
event. Hour three was a decisive point in the event for most
teams, and only two remained on the lead lap, FTK,
and SP. Jakson/2 Wild, Proven, and Vapor Racing
and MSquared 2 maintained the top five for most
of this hour.
Age and experience prevailed over youth and enthusiasm
as FTK short filled their slowest driver, former Rotax Masters
National Champion, Andy Seesemann. FTK then pitted with
Team SP Racing on their final stop of the day, topping of
Jordan Musser’s tank and sending him out head to head with
the young gun Christian Franck. Few drivers can keep pace
with Musser in a Rotax and Franck did a heck of a job trying
to do so. Little by little Musser was able to gap the youngster
a tenth here, five tenths there. Franck gave it his all, and was
able to turn lap times as good as Musser’s, but not consistently.
One second became two, two was soon five and with only a
few minutes remaining the distance was an unreachable dozen.
As the time tacked away Musser refused to look at the flag
woman and see the time left on the clock, but the checkered
flag was thrown right on time at four hours. Officials might
want to rethink the checkered flag thing as the flag was given to
a back marker at four hours not the leader who had just passed
start finish 15 seconds before. Checkered flag should fly for the
winner in my book; it kind of takes away from glory if a kart
not even on the lead lap sees it first. Regardless, Musser was
too much to handle and the disappointment weighed heavily
behind Franck’s helmet visor. Musser took the ceremonial
victory lap with the checkered flag high in the air and drove
into the pits pointing at his fuel tank. The tank was empty and
surprisingly the Rotax still had maybe a half lap left in it. Insult
was added to injury, as Team SP was DQ’d for a petty fuel filter
mounting issue. I’ve got to just say boo, booo, boooo on that
one for this reason alone. Only a handful of teams of the 25
actually came here thinking they could win. Sure most hoped
and prayed, but they knew some serious luck would have to
be on their side for that to happen. So, if say 10 teams were
cocky enough to think they could win, the remaining 15 teams
were there for one reason, FUN. It’s a shame a great race ended
that way, but hopefully the organizers will learn and implement
something a little more fun into the next one. FTK was awarded
the first place prize, a Gearbox bag filled with $500 worth of
accessories, while the now second place Team Proven each got
$100 Rotax dollars. A late race charge by Vapor Racing earned
Page 44 Go Racing Magazine January 2007

them third place and $50 each worth of Rotax dollars. Team
Acceleration and Team 2 Wild Karting completed the top five,
ending a fabulous event.
Entry fees were pretty cheap, and some of the established
drivers like the Immigrants team chose to rent a kart and
motor just because it was cost effective to do so. I’d like to
see this become a four race series at different tracks around
the southland, one race a year is not enough. A portion of the
proceeds will go to Ken Johnson and his family to help aid in
Principles
Buy some plain biscuit mix and make
them just like the box says. I add a couple
of my favorite ingredients. Personally,
I like raisins, to give the biscuits a little
natural sweetness, and I throw in some
cashews to add a little protein to the mix.
My other all-time favorite is my famous
PB&R sandwich. It’s basically a peanut
butter and jelly sandwich, minus the
jelly and plus raisins. I know both snacks
sound a little different but they definitely
do the trick. Not only can they be eaten
on the run, but they also stand up to the
sometimes harsh track environments.
Try to give yourself time to relax and
prepare for the race. Work out a schedule
In this final series of articles from for the day, so you know how much time
Memo Gidley’s Secrets of Speed for you have and what you can do to get
Two-Cycle Kart Racing we will look into ready. If possible, try not to work with
some of the principles of race craft. With your race suit on. Putting your suit on and
all the technical and driving work behind getting ready to race should be a constant
us, we can now get out on the track. The routine that helps you to get focused and
This is what you work for.
gear is all set and you are ready to go
racing. In this series or articles we now
climb inside your helmet and prepare you
for what you can expect while out on the
track. Obviously we can’t prepare you for
every situation you will encounter, but
we’ll give you a number of things to think
about. In this first of three installments on
racing principals we will look at getting
ready to race and how to get the most
from practice.
Race Preparation
Practice
Proper practice procedure is critical
to having a successful weekend. Your kart
should always be ready to go as soon as
you get to the track. A guaranteed way to
lose valuable practice time is to still be
working on your kart while others are out
on the track fine-tuning theirs. The only
things that you should have to do when
you arrive at the track are the necessities
such as checking wheel nuts, air and fuel
in the kart, plugging in your computer,
Keeping your energy level up is and warming up the engine...that’s it. I
Direct drive start up starts with a
good push.
easily overlooked at the racetrack. You
must take care of yourself, as well as your
kart. Don’t forget to put some fuel in your
also like to get my kart on the track scales
as soon as possible. You want your kart to
be at weight before you start to make any
body. Make sure you take in lots of fluids changes to the set-up to make it faster.
during the day. This should include things If it is a new track, walk the track
like water and pure juices, not soda or and look for subtleties such as banking or
heavy drinks. Try to bring various types surface changes that are hard to notice with
of fruit that you can snack on all day long. just driving. I also write out a game plan
Avoid the fast food stand. I always take on things I want to try during the practice
some time between sessions to have a day. This helps to keep me focused but
snack and to keep hydrated. A good time also helps me to make sure that I have all
to do this is as the engine is cooling down the parts and tools to carry out my plan.
before taking a plug reading.
Watch your hands, you could get Having quick pre-made snacks at the
levels at their highest. Try this snack tip.
Some people like to sit out sessions to
allow the track to gain grip before they
start putting wear on their equipment.
This works if it’s your home track and you
have the experience to really know how which will put you behind. Once your kart
the track will change. However, on most is ready to go, you can then relax a little
tracks, it’s valuable to get a sense of the bit until the next session.
early conditions so that you have a better Remember that practice is there for
change throughout the weekend. It makes no sense to dial your kart in on
Once you hit the track, the number old tires, only to slap on a new set for
one mistake most new drivers make is that qualifying and miss the set-up. I always
they just drive around and don’t really pay set aside a couple of sessions towards the
attention. On a new track, it is important
to learn the track in the shortest time
end of the day to simulate a qualifying
run. This will allow you to make any Give yourself room in qualifying.
possible. Remembering land markers will changes to the handling, gearing, etc. to
help you with things like braking points, get the kart ready to qualify.
turn-in points, etc. This will help to get up In the next installment on Racing
to speed fast. After a few laps of learning
the track, you should then start to think
about how the kart is handling. Keep it
Principals from Memo Gidley’s Secrets
of Speed for Two-Cycle Kart Racing we
will look at racing principals including
Hot Tip
In a single lap qualifying, put
simple at first. Is the kart under-steering,
over-steering, or is the traction poor?
qualifying and starting.
a little extra air in your tires.
When I work with new drivers, I ask
them to think about which end of their
go-kart gives up first and keeps them
This will help build heat faster,
creating more grip for the short
from going faster. In other words, “why
can’t you carry more speed through that
corner?” You can never have a perfect
kart. Some area on the kart is giving up
first, making you slow for the turns.
After the end of the session, it is
important that you start thinking about
the track and kart immediately. Taking
good notes is key to being successful.
All of the great teams spend a lot of
time documenting everything that goes
on at the track. If you think that just
remembering is good enough, you are
wrong. The sooner you start to write notes
session.
down the better because it is most fresh
in your mind. Drawing a track map and
Set up the draft, and make the
rating the problem areas for you or the
kart is important. I have adopted a rating
system in order to be consistent no matter
which track I go to. I use the number 1
as a small problem and the number 5 as a
major problem.
pass at the end of the straight.
Once you identify the problem areas,
begin to write down and decide on possible
changes to make to your kart. Don’t delay
in making those changes! I see a lot of
people decide on perfectly good changes
but because they wait they don’t leave
themselves enough time to actually get
them done. Running out of time will
guarantee that you miss part of practice,
