DIRECTORS' REPORT
We have pleasure in submitting for your consideration snd adoption. the Report and Balance Sheet for the Half Year ended
25th March. 1950.
Safm.— The Cash Sales for the Half Year amounted to Kl,355,192, an increase of ji96,431, or 7.7 per cent over the
cormspondmg period of last year. Since the austerity period of the war supplies have gradually become more normal and members
have been able to purchase freely those goods which were previously difficult to obtain. These circumstances have contributed
to the mmarkable Sales increases which have been achieved by the Society in recent years. The policy of your Directors is at all
s to ssdeguard the invested capital of the members. As you will see froiu the figures as shown below. 90per cent of the members"'
sham and loan capital is reinvested in Government arid co-operative investments. We think this is a remarkable achievement
considering the number of new businesses that have been purchased during the past few years. Depreciation hss been 'stepped
up and the Reserve Fiind has been considerably strengthened. It is hoped that in the not too distant future we wiB have the
practically wiped out, which will not only strengthen the Society financiall but will increase the surplus available to
membem
The following figures reveal the progress being made by the Society.— YEAR ENDED
DIRECTORS' REPORT
submittuig far your consideration and adoption the Report and Balance Sheet for the Half Year ended
Sales for the Half Year (27 weeks) amounted to EI,459,921, an increase of El 43,013. or 10.86 per cent over
period (26 weeks) of last year. After deducting one week's average sales fram the periad under review for equitabkc
amounts to f88,935, or 6.75 per cent. It was during the year 1948 that the Society first reached the sides
~yfi2 '0N 000, end in so short a period we have now soared to annual sales amounting to f28 l 5,113,which is only 65 pcs' cent
't of E3,000,000. This wonderful expansion of trade has been the chief factor in enabling the Society to mcroasa
;m dividend wun the tendency has been for dividends of retail societies up and down the country to falL D creesbtg margins,
w~ we have nwnfioned in previous reports, have campefied the C.W9. to reduce their dividend to a level which wig cost this
ely f8000 a year; the new National Wage Award will cost us approximately E13 000 a year; taxation o'ccssioned
'sty app
hy nariancd needs will most probably increase still further due to the defence programme, and our I~motor Beet, with steep rises
tbe c«st of petrol, tyres and batteries, is resulting in heavier charges to the trading departments.
' outline vriB eiuble you ta
tbs Society will be compelled to revise its dividend rate next Hcdf Year, when the(all impact of these increased expenses
have to be faced, together with the 6d. dividend on tobacco.
most grateful thanks to the members for their continued loyalty encl our appreciation to the stafis, to both of
wham we make a further appeal to help to counteract the heavy expenses with which we are being faced, by substanfiaIIy increasing
sales.
DIRECTORS' REPORT
Fdfccc-fifcmbcrs, ' we have pleasure in submitting for your consideration and approval aur report for the Quarter ended 30th December,
1950,
The G h Scdes amounted to fi737$17 2s. 10d., which represents an increase of 668,009 or 102 per cent compared
period last year. It is hoped that our sales wdl reach 63,000,000 per annum by the end of this half year.
owever, again point out that these terrific increases are ta a large extent due to increased prices. In caparison
vritb «her saderies we are more than holding our own, but as and when the Peak is reached then will be the testing time for the
Ccso stive Movement and Lincoln Society.
bss been kept down due to the increased sales, but should even a slight decrease in trade take place the
g~rate
d;ridsnd w«dd be reduced considerably.
Wages have risen during the Quarter by fil,955, due in part to ttm new Wage Agteement.
ayees' bonus for the first Quarter has cost the Society fi2,000 (approx. ) and the hristnam Vouchem have cast m Rl, 090.
We~ttm members for their continued loyalty and we have reason to feel proud of the average weekly purchases, which
are fit 9s. 26th We also extend our thanks to the employees who, by their efforts, have made this figure possible.
(6) fifismlrerstrjy. —The present membership is 38.965, an increase of 314 for the Quarter.
(c) Dranery Department. —Since the hast report the alterations at our Drapery have been completed. We trust that all our
give m their full support as we have now the most modern emporium in the city. Increased sales are essential in
ttm expense and pay for the renovation. Weknow we canrely on you to do your part by getting all your requirements
frees your awn Society.
(d) Festjvcd of Britafn.—Most of our members witt by now have received a handbill giving details of cost, gtc., in connection
ttm Fesrivcd of Britain outing. As soon as we have been given train times, gec., these witt be sent direct to each member
ary will give full instructions as to trains, meals, admission tickets ta Exhibition, and a further statement
d giving details of the route and the times of the buses which wifi be run to the station from variou parts of the city.
Ycu csn be assured that everything witt be sent out from this office as soon as possible.
(,) yetmg Procedure. —Kindly note the new voting times, as passed at the Quarterly Meeting held on 21st August, 1950, are
ress jn aperarion. Candidates have been noii6ed relative to the count, and your Directors have appointed Mr. I'. Grainger as
Officer. Mr. Grainger was formerly an mnployae of the Society snd m also sn ex-Board member. He is absolutely
indcpendem, being no longer able to seek dection due to the age limit ruk. We would also point out that the vacancy caused by
Mrs. Dear retirmg is for one year only, which means ttmt tbe person polling the smallest number cd votes wifi be elected for this
period snd will require to seek remtectjon if he or she desires next year.
(f)~Holidays. —We have pleasure in informing our memb«s relative to the conducted holiday tours arranged for 1951.
The resorts which have been selected are Sandown and the Isle af Wight, Llandudno and North Wales. and Newquay and Lands
End. We are con6dent that should you decide on this type of hohday you will have no mgrets. Mr. McCall, in the General Office,
Free School Lane, wifi be pleased to give anyone who is interested full details snd every possible help with regard to holidays.
) Development. —Alterations are now completed at our Branch at Boultham Park RoacL The size of the shop hss been doubled
snd t interior hss been completely m~. We feel confident that the alterations will bring about increased trade and should
encourage the people near this branch, who are as yet not co-operators, to become members by jaining the Society and registering
st dus brmrck
(6) St Gfies — A licence has been applied for in order that we can extend the shop premises at Swift Gardens, St. Giles. The
trade at this branch since purchased by the Society bas increased so considerably that the shop is far too small for our requ'uements.
It is hoped to start on this extension at an early date.
(t) Travelling Shops.— Two more travelling shops are on order and should be delivered to the Society in the very near future.
be utjtjsed in the new housing estates where. at the present time. several of aur members have to travel a comjderabte
to visit the nearest brands We are hoping that we will be successful in abtaining ane of the shops which the Corporation
bmtcfing on ttm Boultham Moor Estate. This is still doubtful, but you can rest assumd that thc Directors wifi do everything
in then txwrer to see that you, our members who are hving in this area, are given every facility to purchase your requirements with
~ Wfi wifi tender for several of 'the shops as and when these are available, but, unfortunately, we cannot state de6nitely that
~"afiba~ The members in the Boultham Moor ares and on any new hoaxing estate can rest assured that in the event of us
ta obtain a shop or shops the estate will be served,~even mora adequately, by means of travelhng shops. It is
~~mtanrian to place more of these on order so that should the worst come to the worst we are in a positicm to supply
our membem.
(f) ttarncastte. — As yet we have been unable to g«this new shop open due to the fact that we are still meeting tbe Ministry of
ham with a view to obtaining a hcence for extensive alterations. We are hapehd that this will be obtained very
~when the work will be started ~tety.
(6)~ Like all other merchants, we are experiencing great dtffccuty in obtaining coal~and much of the trouble has
msxt by the members themselves. During tlu, summer period our man on several occasions had no orders to ddivar. They
~p . to work ou stoclnng, but a fortnight before the winter period started we were inundated with orders. This had the effect
~us 300 tons behind on the 6rst day of the winter periocL If tbe membem had~this coal earlier we would have
to have started on the winter defiveries rjght away. whereas tbe first week af the winter period was completely tdren up
suuanet coal orders. We are nat atone in'being behind; the private mercbanm are experiencing the same fi Cuttjj
We trust that aur membam will be pafient and 'that they will reahse that our workmen are only human snd cauaat
do the impossible.
r. P.K TraswelL — Mr. Truswell, w)to will be retjring fram the Directorship of the Society at the end of the present hdf
almost completed a record of xervfce. 54e has been a Directar since March, 1925. and was President on
~ from APrd. 1932, to 1934, and fmm 1949 to 1950. Only the late Mr. Bell has served on the directorate for a tant(sr
Mr. Truswell s inffuence will be rmssed in the Bosrdraoax as he wss always constructive snd studied everything care(any
Although Mr. Truswell will no longer be a Director of the Society, we trust that he sntf stifi contmm
interest in the Movement which he hss seen grow so rapidly during the time he has served on ttu'.Boaid' When
wss 6rst elected the sales were fi759,122 per annum and the membership 20,465. Toctay from the Report you can sea wtcst ttm
~~"jp and sales are at the present time, To Mr. Truswell we dfer aur thanks and trust that he and Mrs. Truswell msy be
long spared and enjoy good health.
to tbde.— The Directors are submitting this alteration relative to the purchases of s person being~
ffre Board ar tbe Educarian~,duc fo ths fs« that prices have increased so considerably during the psst few years ttmt
are of the opinion that the old rate of 650 for a msrried man and fi25 for a single person. widow or widower js
The new rate of 660 per annum for a marner person snd fi35 per annum in the case of a single perse@, wjdmv
rc 0n«en excessive amount of purchases for anyone to be called upon to make who is seeking election to tbe Djsactamhjp
lt is our opinion that we should get 100 pm cent support as far as~
to hold otfice in the Society. We, therefore, ask you to support the resolution whole-~ at the Special
~ which will be held at the dose of the Orknary
Yours faithfully, For snd on behalf of the Directors,
