B2 The Sheridan Press, Friday, November 11, 2005 Lady Generals (Continued from Page B1) “We just decided that we wanted it, and the pressure was on their shoulders,” Koch said. “They beat us in four when we played them here, and beat us in three when we played them (in Rock Springs), and they overlooked us and we came out and took advantage of it.” The three areas that carried the Lady Generals were the confidence they played with, their defense and the remarkable performances from every player who stepped on the court. “I think we really played intense on defense,” Cooper said. “(Western Wyoming is) a very good defensive team, but I really thought we matched their effort. For the most part we were aggressive and played with a lot of confidence.” Blake, who said her philosophy was to “just hit the ball as hard as I could,” led the way with 27 kills and 27 digs. Heiner added 28 digs, 12 kills and four blocks, while fellow sophomore Kaci Switzer had 13 digs and eight kills — nearly every one coming in a pressure-packed situation. While Lady General fans have come to expect big matches from the trio, it was the players who aren’t normally in the spotlight who shined on this night. “They stepped it up so much tonight, and I’m so proud of them — they played their hearts out,” Heiner said of teammates such as Chelsea Strong, Koch and Abby Stewart. “Most of the time they don’t get recognized, but tonight they really stepped up. They worked and they worked and they didn’t give up.” Strong finished with 32 digs, Koch had nine blocks and eight kills, and Stewart finished with 20 digs. Setter Lindsey Stookey had 56 assists, eight kills and 12 digs, and Sterling added seven kills. Cooper said without those performances, the Lady Generals would have slipped into the losers’ bracket of the double-elimination tournament. “Jessica Koch had a couple of big hits and just blocked the heck out of the ball. She dominated the net at times,” he said. “Chelsea Strong just made some great digs for us. Abby Stewart had four or five outstanding plays that maybe she wasn’t making a few weeks ago, and my hat’s off to all those girls.” “I think what it is, is everybody wants it so bad. Everybody wants to go nationals,” Blake said of the contributions from all nine Lady Generals who played. “It feels awesome; there’s probably no way to describe it. It’s a great win for us, so we’ll take that intensity into (Friday).” The Lady Generals brought the intensity and confidence into Thursday. Looking nothing like a team that had been prone to sluggish starts, mental lapses and letdowns at the end of games, Sheridan College played like a team that wouldn’t be denied no matter how strong the Lady Spartans were on the other side of the net. “This is the most intense that I can ever remember,” Heiner said. “We played intense the entire time and never let down. Switzer tied the third frame for the 11th time with a block at 24-24. The two teams traded points before a Lady Spartan return into the net and a Stewart shot caught the line to give the Lady Generals a 27-25 lead. Stookey added to the momentum when her shot found the floor, and two unsuccessful Western Wyoming volleys allowed the Lady Generals to even the match. “We just said to stay confident and good things would happen,” Cooper said. “Our kids kept their chins up and they were confident and they kept doing the things we’ve been practicing and things turned our way. “I think after getting that win in Game 2 they knew they could do it.” Up 6-5 early in the third game, an ace from Blake and a block by Koch spawned a 6-1 run that carried the Lady Generals to a Game 3 win. Western Wyoming also had a run of its own to win Game 4. Thursday was also the day the Baltimore product signed a national letter of intent to play at the University of Montana. Chase, who committed to the Griz in September, was an All-Region IX selection as a freshman after averaging 19 points and 10 rebounds. The National Junior College Athletic Association put him on its in pressure situations and that should be fun. “They came out excited and went out and got the lead and we were able to hold it.” The Lady Generals will try to hold onto that momentum for another two days. Casper College clipped Sheridan College in the two regular season meetings, and only suffered one conference loss — a five-game defeat to Western Wyoming near the end of the season. This season, however, hasn’t quite gone the way Champ Bailey or Randy Moss were hoping it would. In the preseason, after the Oakland Raiders signed Moss, Bailey fielded questions about what it would be like to have one of the NFL’s most dangerous receivers in the AFC West, playing for the Raiders when they faced the Denver Broncos twice a year. It had the makings of a great rivalry within a great rivalry. When the teams play Sunday, though, Bailey and Moss will both be limping to the line — if they make it to the field at all. Moss is listed as questionable with injuries to his groin, ribs and pelvis. Bailey is listed as probable with a hamstring injury that has bothered him all season. ‘‘He’s definitely one of the best in the game,’’ Bailey said of Moss. ‘‘Has been for a while now. It’s going to be a challenge.’’ It’ll be even more of one if Moss is healthy and Bailey hasn’t improved since the last time he took the field, two weeks ago against Philadelphia. In what could now be best known Stender (Continued from Page B1) as Terrell Owens’ final game with the Eagles, Bailey was put in one-on-one coverage against the All-Pro receiver and he gave up two big, embarrassing plays. One was a 91-yard run and catch for a touchdown in which Bailey got juked then looked to be running gingerly in an unsuccessful attempt to catch up. The other was on a 43-yard catch that set up another Eagles score. Both were largely written off to the eight- and nine-man pass rushes Denver called that game, which left Bailey on the island — ‘‘Ten out of 10 cornerbacks don’t make that tackle,’’ defensive lineman Trevor Pryce said — and to the injury, which has nagged Bailey since preseason and hampered his performance. Bailey has practiced this week and thinks he can go. As always, if he’s healthy enough to play, he won’t be making excuses. Meanwhile, Raiders coach Norv Turner said Moss’ return to the practice field Wednesday could be construed as a good sign. ‘‘I think it is progress,’’ Turner said. Nonetheless, Moss missed all of last week’s practice and caught one pass Sunday in a loss to the Chiefs. a junior season that saw her earn All- State honors. “It’s about as exciting as when we found out Steph wanted to come to Sheridan,” Elliott said, noting she attended Big Horn through the eighth grade. “I think she would have had the same success regardless of where she played or who she would have played under. She’s an extremely self-motivated, hardworking athlete with a lot of talent.” Her energy and enthusiasm for the sport are the two traits that will most benefit the Lady Griz. “She’s just a very high-energy player who goes nonstop,” Elliott said. “She can play offense, defense, inside, outside — she’ll be a big boost to their program just in terms of the energy and the personality she brings.” The Lady Griz have made the NCAA tournament 16 times in the past 23 seasons. They are coached by Robin Selvig, who has compiled HUSSKE CHIROPRACTIC CLINIC Carpenter wins NL Cy Young NEW YORK (AP) — Two years ago, when the pain in Chris Carpenter’s shoulder wouldn’t go away, he thought his career might be over. Patience, persistence and a nasty curveball earned him the NL Cy Young Award on Thursday. After going 21-5 with a 2.83 ERA for the St. Louis Cardinals, Carpenter received 19 of 32 first-place votes and finished with 132 points in balloting by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. He beat out Florida lefty Dontrelle Willis, becoming the first Cardinals pitcher to claim the honor since Hall of Famer Bob Gibson in 1970. ‘‘I can’t believe I won,’’ Carpenter said. ‘‘It’s a great feeling.’’ Willis, who was 22-10 with a 2.63 ERA, was listed first on 11 ballots, second on 18 and third on three for 112 points. Seven-time winner Roger Clemens got the other two first-place votes and came in a distant third at age 43. Willis was all class in shrugging off any disappointment. ‘‘I can always tell my kids, even when they stop listening to their old dad, that I was in the running with Roger Clemens and Chris Carpenter to win a prestigious award,’’ Willis said. ‘‘It’s not that bad to be the second-best pitcher in the league.’’ ‘‘He’s not to the point where he can play, and he certainly wasn’t to the point on Sunday, where he can turn it loose for an entire game,’’ Turner said. Moss hasn’t spoken to the media since Oakland’s season opener, so his thoughts about going against Bailey aren’t known. The last few weeks, however, have been rough. Since getting hurt in a game Oct. 16 against San Diego, Moss has caught seven passes for 76 yards and two scores — not really invisible, but hardly the every play threat he normally is. ‘‘I’m not sure if he’s 100 percent healthy or not, but at whatever, let’s say he’s 95 percent, he’s still a dangerous weapon,’’ Broncos defensive backs coach Bob Slowik told The Gazette of Colorado Springs.
