In Hong Kong, brunch is THE great weekend tradition: a time to gather with friends who are too busy during the week, a time to undo your belt and load up on Benedicts, a time to reflect on the mistakes of Saturday night over a glass of champagne or twelve. I present for your consideration this week, a comparison of two very different brunches. #1: The revamped Kitchen brunch at the W Hotel. #2: The Ozone brunch at the Ritz-Carlton. Let’s get it on. Question #1: To buffet or not to buffet? Luxury buffets are a strange beast, which I never know whether to embrace or reject. They are exhausting and seductive, both a siren call and traffic jam for delectables. Should I eat at the Western, Asian, Salad, or Dessert station? Should I have saffron chicken or poached eggs? Eggs Florentine or Alaskan king crab? Should I shoulder through this bevy of brunch battlers buttressing their behinds by my bread basket? Oh, my. It’s all a bit overwhelming. Then again… Not to buffet feels a little empty, doesn’t it? When you can try everything and it’s all delicious, shouldn’t you just go to town? That’s Kitchen in a nutshell. I ate everything I could and more well-cooked eggs than I should and really, that’s what matters. At Ozone it’s more civilized— a multi-course meal of fusion dishes (foie gras lollipops, anyone?) with miniburgers brought to your table before your main arrives. But at the end of the day it’s brunch. I need my buffet. Winner: Kitchen Question #2: What are you drinking, son? A booze-free brunch is like going on a date with a virgin—sure, but really, what’s the point? When I come for gluttony I come for gluttony, and alcohol is high on my list. Kitchen offers champagne and Bloody Marys, of which I stick to the latter. They’re spiced THE STRAIGHT MAN with Yalun Tu Brunch Wars Part 1: Kowloon Edition strangely but addictively and after the first you want a fifth (I skipped over two through four, which I guzzled like a boss while you read that clause). All in all, pleasant. BUT... The advantage here falls squarely to Ozone (it is a bar. after all). In addition to champagne and the Marys, they have a full bar of cocktails including molecular ones, foamy things, standard drinks and non-standard ones, too (“deviant drinks,” I’d call them). Winner: Ozone Question #3: How do you feel about ambience? Kitchen is on the second floor of the W hotel, overlooking the water. Ozone is on the 118th floor of the Ritz-Carlton with a full sea view. I think the answer is pretty clear in this respect. But the view aside, it's a different question, one I’d answer by looking at differences: The W has a good feel, but it also has loud drunken expats, while Ozone has a nice chill vibe, but eventually was overrun by the Ladies Who Lunch (who terrify me). I’ll give them both a pass here though, since this is Hong Kong and socialites and drunk expats (drunkpats?) are everywhere. The only thing that tips the scale in my book are the tables: Kitchen is a proper restaurant with high tables; Ozone is almost there but you still have a little bit of that “I’m-eating-brunch-in-a-bar” feeling. Tip for the management: get some phone books, heighten the tables, voila! Instant class. Winner: Kitchen Final Verdict: If you’re in Kowloon for an extremely lazy Sunday, I’m happy with both Kitchen and Ozone. Take Kitchen for a more traditional brunch experience and the fun buffet; take Ozone if you want food with your drinks and you like some quirk with your upscale.
