March of Dimes of Wisconsin Invests in
Women’s Health for Stronger Healthier Babies
Last year, the March of Dimes had over $1,350,000 in currently active research
grants awarded to local organizations and healthcare facilities throughout
the state of Wisconsin. These are a group of individuals who work together
to provide all women with prenatal education, incentives, and encouragement for medical
treatments for new moms and assist at-risk mothers with the necessary tools needed to have
healthier babies. The March of Dimes Wisconsin Chapter has awarded $53,150 to community
organizations throughout Wisconsin to help address the unique needs of pregnant women,
Pass It On
Incentive Program
The March of Dimes Wisconsin Chapter was proud to introduce
its new mission-based incentive program, Pass it
on, for the 2010 March for Babies. March for Babies participants
were able to earn donations in their names for
local community family-assistance agencies, such as
schools, social service organizations and hospitals in various
communities in Wisconsin.
This year walkers raised enough money to donate:
9 car seats
114 cases of diapers
108 one-year supplies of prenatal vitamins
To the following community partners:
Wood County Health Department
Eau Claire Women’s Clinic
American Family Children’s Hospital
Rock County Health Department
Aurora Family Service
Racine/Kenosha Birthing Project
Family Services- Prenatal Care Coordination
Thanks to all your hard work your fundraising dollars
are doing more than they ever have before. You’ve
been a part of helping many Wisconsin babies and
their families receive the help they need to stay
healthy and happy.
Thank you!
Healthier PregPregnancy at 40
Weeks
According to the Health
Education Center, a
baby’s brain at 35
weeks weighs only twothirds
of what it will
weigh at 40 weeks. In
the last six weeks of
pregnancy the size of a
baby’s brain almost doubles. This six
week window adds
crucial developmental functions that are
needed for the babies survival such as
balance, coordination, learning and social
functioning. If a baby is born earlier
than 40 weeks, they are more likely to
suffer:
Feeding problems due to the fact
that they cannot coordinate sucking,
swallowing, and breathing.
Apnea
SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome)
Mothers can take steps to prevent birth
defects and/or low birth weight by:
Going to a prenatal checkup as soon
as symptoms of pregnancy arise.
Don’t drink, smoke, or use any drugs.
Eat a balanced diet.
Stay current on all medical
appointments.
Have medical problems like diabetes,
epilepsy, and other health conditions
treated immediately.
Know genetic history.
pregnancy please visit
Wisconsin
Family Teams
A big thank you to the 380 plus Family Teams
that joined together in Wisconsin to support
babies through March for Babies this spring!
Family Teams are the heart of March for Babies.
These teams are made up of friends and
family members that walk to celebrate, honor or
remember the babies and children who have
touched their lives. Everyone has their own
story, but we all share the same hope. The hope
that one day all babies will be born healthy.
Are you a part of an active Family
Team? Would you consider sharing your success
with other teams? The Wisconsin Chapter
of the March of Dimes has created volunteer
Family Team Councils across the state that are
working to support other March for Babies’
Family Teams. The councils assist and share
information from online registration help, fundraising
tips, walk day logistics to simply connecting
with other teams and sharing stories.
If you would be interested in learning more
about Family Team Council or helping with the
2011 March for Babies, please call the Wisconsin
Chapter office at 414.778.3500. We hope
to hear from you!
Benefits of the
NICU
Family Support
One in every ten babies that are born in the U.S. is
admitted to the newborn intensive care unit (NICU)
because they are premature or suffer from some
other medical condition. The March of Dimes understands
what a traumatic experience this can be for
families, which is why the NICU Family Support Program
was developed. The program is guided by former
NICU families and implemented through the
March of Dimes chapters to build a family-centered
philosophy that addresses the needs of parents, siblings,
grandparents, and extended family throughout
a baby’s hospitalization, transition to home, and in
the event of a newborn’s death.
NICU Family Support offers:
March of Dimes Specialist with NICU experience
who works with families and staff.
Sensitive and engaging educational materials that
introduce parents to the staff, equipment, procedures
and conditions that they may encounter in
the NICU.
Coordinated projects such as the bereavement
box shown above to help families through the
tough times.
Customized programs to serve the specific needs
of each NICU and the population it supports.
March of Dimes currently has a part-time NICU Family
Support Specialist at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin
and also provides services and materials at St. Mary’s
and Meriter hospitals in Madison, Wisconsin.
