STUDENT SENATE Hello Everyone, This year Student Senate will be sending care packages out to troops as part of our goodwill donation for Thanksgiving and Christmas. We would like to send care packages to those servicemen and women whom any students, faculty, or staff personally knows. If there is anyone you would like to send a care package to please e-mail me back with the following: name, address, troop #, and any ideas for what to put in the care package. In addition, if anyone has any suggestions for items we can put in the care packages we would greatly appreciate this. I would like to receive the information about care packages and who to send them to by November 15th so we can get them sent out. Thank you for all your help. Sincerely, Laura Boucher Student Senate President Elect THANKSGIVING BREAK: Commencement is May 14, 2011 Meyer Theatre 9:30 a.m. Can you believe that Thanksgiving is just around the corner?? When we have Thanksgiving Break we want you to think about turkey and family, not about spending time at the College! The College will be close on Wednesday November 24 th after 4:30 pm. The Campus will open on Monday November 29 at 7:00 am. Your ID badges will not allow you to enter the building during the Thanksgiving Break. FLU-LIKE ILLNESS Is it hot in here??? If so, you may have the flu. Information and protocols keep changing as the CDC (Center for Disease Control) learns more about the flu. The basic rule is that if you are ill, stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone (without the use of fever reducing medicine). One of the ways to protect yourself against the flu is to get a flu vaccine. Bellin College students and employees can get a FREE Flu Vaccine on the Bellin Campus: Monday, 11/15/2010 - 7:30-12:00 pm Thursday, 11/18/2010 – 8:30-5:00 pm Friday, 12/3/2010 – 7:30 – 4:00 pm ATTENTION BOTH BSN AND MSN GRADUATE CANDIDATES….. Mark your calendars for a very important event… GRADUATION!.. It may seem a long time from now, but the days will fly by quickly. The date for graduation is Saturday, May 14, 2011 at 9:30 am at the Meyer Theatre located in downtown Green Bay. Practice for graduation will be Friday, May 13, 2011 at 10:30 am. Practice is about 1 ½ hrs. $ TUITION $ The final installment is due November 18. All fall semester tuition needs to be taken care of by this day. Yet few of us come close to this state with any regularity. And happy people are more energetic than unhappy people. We now know that happiness adds about nine years to life expectancy. So even if you don’t think happiness is such a big deal in itself, it seems to serve a useful function. Happy people are more likely to change the world in positive ways. Research suggests three different routes to happiness: The Pleasant Life – consisting of as many pleasures as possible and the skills to amplify the pleasure; The Good Life – knowing what your strengths are and crafting your life to use those strengths; The Meaningful Life – using your strengths in service of something you believe is larger than you are. In Scotland, they are trying out a new and unusual kind of medicine – happiness. According to Dr. Derek Cox, Director of Public Health at Dumfries and Galloway NHS, there is mounting evidence that happiness might be at least as powerful a predictor, if not a more powerful predictor than some other lifestyle factors that we talk about such as, cigarette smoking, diet and physical activity. “It’s not just that if you’re physically well you’re likely to be happy but actually, if you are happy you are likely to have less in the way of physical illness than those who are unhappy,” said Dr. Cox. Research has found that happier people also have greater protection against things like heart disease and stroke. In other words, we already know what stress does to the body; we’re now learning that happiness has the opposite, protective effect on those same biological pathways. 5
