Does Happiness Live in Cyberspace? So where do we look for happiness? A majority of people now log on to the web. The question is will the internet make the world a happier or less happy place? Scientists know that human contact is critical to happiness but technology can push that contact out of our lives. However, research has shown that people who log on to the internet tend to have more friends than those who do not. According to Robert Putnam, a celebrated social scientist, the key is in mixing the real and virtual experience. The huge growth in e-mail, blogs, message boards and messenger services has created a host of new social networks which defy geography. “Using the internet to make connections that you then meet in real life, that’s very positive,” says Mr. Putnam. Finding Happiness “We search for happiness everywhere, but we are like Tolstoy’s fabled beggar who spent his life sitting on a pot of gold, under him the whole time. Your treasure, your perfection is within you already. But to claim it you must leave the commotion of the mind and abandon the desires of the ego and enter into the silence of the heart.” ~ Elizabeth Gilbert It appears that happiness may be closer than we used to think. Studies have shown that happiness is most often equated with contentment. According to the dictionary, contentment is: Accepting things as they are Mental and emotional satisfaction Peace of mind The trick is that what really matters is what is going on inside, rather than outside. Happiness lies in making peace with what you have vs. what you want. This isn’t always easy, very rarely do we have everything we want. But by changing your perspective you can achieve contentment even if you can’t change the situation. If your own mental attitude is right, even if you are in a hostile atmosphere, you feel happy. As the famous saying goes, change what you can, accept what you cannot and have the wisdom to know the difference. Finding happiness is not in striving for it as a goal, but being aware that we are happy living life twenty four crowded hours a day. 6

Kappa Pi, our chapter of the nursing honor society, is hosting a caramel apple sale Monday, Nov. 8 th from 0930-1:30 and 5pm – 5:30 in the college atrium. For $1, you can enjoy a crisp sliced apple with warm caramel sauce. For an additional 50 cents, add on nuts, sprinkles, etc. Eat early and often – yum! The School of Radiologic Sciences The School of Radiologic Sciences and BSRS students will be celebrating National Radiologic Technology Week the week of November 7-13, 2010. The students and faculty will be offering activities in an effort to create a greater awareness of the vital role medical imaging plays in diagnosing and treating disease. We hope all students, faculty and staff participate in our planned events to help us celebrate. Thank you Randy Griswold Program Director B.S.N.A B.S.N.A is having its next meeting Monday, November 15 at 2 p.m. in room 112. We are starting to have good turnouts at our meetings and would love to have you join us as well. Our T-shirt sale for breast cancer awareness was a success. We sold 125 shirts total raising $250.00 for the local American Cancer Society. Jennifer Gartzke came up with the idea and design for the shirts so a special thanks goes out to her. Finally B.S.N.A will be serving a special snack to students in the atrium on November 22 at noon so stop on by and have something sweet to help get through tests and HW.
