Inmaculada Ortiz is <strong>Prof</strong>essor of Chemical Engineering and former Department Head at<br />

<strong>Universidad</strong> <strong>de</strong> <strong>Cantabria</strong>, Spain. She obtained her B.S. <strong>de</strong>gree and Ph.D in Sciences<br />

(chemistry) at the <strong>Universidad</strong> <strong>de</strong>l País Vasco in 1980 and 1983, respectively. After being<br />

Lecturer in Chemical Engineering at the <strong>Universidad</strong> <strong>de</strong>l País Vasco she joined<br />

<strong>Cantabria</strong> in 1992. She was Head of the Chemistry Department from 1996 to 2000 and<br />

of the Chemical Engineering and inorganic Chemistry Department from 2003-2004.<br />

The activity at the <strong>Universidad</strong> <strong>de</strong> <strong>Cantabria</strong> has been shared with the collaboration<br />

with the National R&D program. She was Scientific Officer of the National R&D<br />

programmes on Environment, Chemical Processes and Products and Natural<br />

Resources: Environmental Technologies from 1998-2000 and 2000-2002 respectively.<br />

She was proposed as coordinator of the Chemical Technology area of the Spanish<br />

ANEP (National Agency of Evaluation and Prospective) for the period 2005-2008. She<br />

has been a member in different Committees, i.e., National Commission for the<br />

evaluation of research activity, 2002-03; member of the Council of Scientists of INTAS<br />

2003-06, etc. In 2008 she was nominated as correspon<strong>de</strong>nt member of the Spanish<br />

Real Aca<strong>de</strong>mia <strong>de</strong> Ciencias Exactas, Físicas y Naturales.<br />

She is the lea<strong>de</strong>r of the research group “Advanced Separation Processes”. The<br />

research interests of Inmaculad Ortiz are in the areas of,<br />

i) Membrane processes. Applications to waste water treatment & reclamation,<br />

and to different industrial sectors, food processing, chemical and<br />

pharmaceutical industry, etc.<br />

ii) Advanced Oxidation Technologies. Environmental applications.<br />

iii) Process intensification and its applications.<br />
